Such a shame.

Would be great now if Konami drop this series and open up a path for another developer to have a go.

As a long-suffering Castlevania and Silent Hill fan, I’d say you probably shouldn’t hold your breath :(

It’ll be impossible for this to escape how poorly this launch went, no matter how good it goes on to be. DriveClub and No Man’s Sky ended up being superb games, but folks only remember how they were on release.

For a PES Master League player, who's never owned or really played a FIFA game in the last 20 years, is it worth getting FIFA 2022 to play the 'Career' mode?

They've never captured the magic of a classic PES master league mode. Playing old versions of PES you really could tell when you signed a new striker who had slightly better stats. Players just felt different. EA don't care about career mode - it's all about the legalised gambling of ultimate team mode and making the game look as close to how sky present it on tv.

Konami have really shit the bed.

Yeah, this has always been the best bit of PES ML for me, they always did the 'player identity' really well, even if it was a fairly unknown or computer generated player.

I remember spending hours upon hours trawling through players to buy, and keeping a spreadsheet at hand to maximise the transfer market opportunity.   When you finally get your updated squad and team together, playing the new faces is such a joy.

Think I'll pass on Fifa, or at least until it's a lot cheaper or on Game Pass - thanks.

Yeah I used to be obsessed with getting strikers in on the cheap who had 90+ for speed. They were lightning quick but useless at finishing. Was great when you could finally afford a superstar. Was similar on Sensible World Of Soccer. Don't think it's ever been captured by FIFA.

the manager career mode is actually decent now in FIFA, but there's something oddly hollow about playing the actual game of football in those games (although I've not played 22)

Yeah that's it - just a weird feeling of the games not being exciting. Even with all the bells and whistles added it still doesn't capture it.

I think PES got the champions league spot on when it finally integrated that into master league. Games felt different somehow.

PES 2020 (and 2021, though I played less of it) still had that magic when it came to differentiating players. I often opted for speedy wide forwards who could be set free with a good through ball, and their poorer finishing would be balanced by the number of chances they'd get. I'd then look to find an attacking midfielder with some good control and dribbling, who could work well in compact spaces and give those forwards the balls they need.

Having sunk a lot of time into FIFA 21's career mode (albeit the player career, rather than the manager) in the last couple of months, that aspect is just nowhere near pronounced enough, it feels like a much more gentle incline of ability, and the best players don't really stand out over their peers because of it. A good player can still destroy poor opposition, but they're usually playing in a side full of similarly good players all of whom seem to be capable of it, so it never really feels like you've just found your equivalent of Bruno Fernandes, the player who seems to transform the side's fortunes.

It's just a shame a lot of PES's master league is a load of old rubbish with little interest in maintaining a link to reality. Though that's a step above the actual football being a load of old rubbish, which is what they've served up now. I gave the Xbox version a spin and it at least performs well compared to the PC edition, but there's so much that just feels broken right now.

Hard disagree there. FIFA 22 is perhaps the biggest change in feel for a while.

Admittedly, that’s within the FIFA realm and is like saying one bottle of Rioja is very different to another - a lot of people like me will just say ‘it’s still fucking red wine’.

There is a weird ‘narrative’ with football games that I used to buy into which is that fifa is all money and no soul and pes is the real gamer’s choice that catches the magic.

That exists because it used to be true and perhaps there is something to it but it’s not as black  and white as that. I’m not a big fan of EA by any means and I do think their game would be better if it wasn’t so corporately focus grouped but it is pretty decent and this year’s is quite a big improvement over 21 if you’re enough of a cork sniffer to notice.

Agreed. FIFA 22 is the biggest change in years. Up to now I've enjoyed both games but end up playing FIFA more. People who haven't played FIFA in years might be surprised if they give it a proper go how good it is.

Hoping Konami can fix this game as I thought last years PES showed a lot of promising signs that they were back on form

I'll find out when Fifa 22 appears on game pass in about 6 months :D

EA Play is a good route for PS owners too, you can generally get it for around £14 a year, my son uses it for Madden but still buys FIFA on release. There’s quite a few other decent games on there too.

PES 21 was great, picked it up cheap for the Euro’s mode while they were on but I’m going to try and dedicate some time to FIFA this year and from what I’ve played, it seems really good.

eFootball looks like a complete disaster though.

I've only played one match of it, so maybe I'm just missing stuff.

It did look strikingly different though, players seemed a lot chunkier than the little stick people that have graced the field in the past. And Gullit's hair bounced around like it was made of pure happiness.

My tactic with FIFA is to buy it every other year, when it's probably different enough to warrant a purchase.

I'm gutted that what was once PES is no more - I just can't get along with Master League in the year 2021 - FIFA plays well, maybe not as well as PES used to but the licenses, presentation, vast game modes etc have to count for something.

One question though - why is there no generic FIFA 22 thread?  I know there's the FIFA online subforum, but I only ever play the offline modes.  FUT can get in the bin - career mode is what I play 75% of the time.

My best guess is that because the online forum exists, nobody thinks to start one.

FIFA needs to hurry up and get women's club teams and a proper women's career mode in there. The small handful of international sides were a great addition when they first arrived in FIFA 16. Six years on, it feels abandoned.

Very true - seems odd it hasn't happened yet as the women's game is growing in popularity every season.

This really rings true for me, even now I remember my old Master League campaign with the default team (although not which version of PES it was on) where they're doing alright until I can eventually sign Gheorghe Hagi from the classic player list. Suddenly everything's going through him and I'm sure he gave the other players an invisible stats boost. Castolo in particular, lethal.

Sadly there’s very few decent single player sports games anymore, Madden is a complete fucking joke, NHL plays and looks almost exactly the same as it did 13 years ago and even the 2K NBA games are filled with so much shitty micro-transactions, they are being ruined too.

Fifa 22 is better than the last one but it still doesn’t play a very exciting game of football against the AI.

Had a quick game of this, back to back with PES 2021, and the latest patch certainly ironed out the biggest issues with diabolical defensive AI and slow passing. It kinda felt like playing the same game instead of some leaked alpha.

Still fuck all to it, of course, and the botched release will have damaged the whole thing.
