This might sound a tad conspiracy-ish, but I do wonder what's going to happen in the long term. I mean, they are on-track following the US playbook: wield influence over a popular form of media. Then while everybody isn't looking, all output from those studios might be (self-)censored into complying with their biggest (Chinese) market, and in the end, you'll have a branch of media that is singing the praises of the Chinese outlook under the guise of 'being for everyone'. Again, exactly what the US did in the second half of the twentieth century. And that's disregarding all the other fingers they have in all the other pies.

Can't say Warframe (for instance) has suffered under their ownership, but yeah, the entire endeavour remains a bit 🤔 imo.

They would never do such a thing.

Oh, wait....

Four Arcade Archives titles were delisted worldwide at the end of August 2020.

Super Sidekicks 2 and Super Sidekicks 3, The Ultimate 11, and Neo Geo Cup ’98 were delisted due to references to Taiwan and the Republic of China (ROC). After an update to the Arcade Archives version of Baseball Stars 2, also in late August, players noted alterations to the Taiwan-based teams in the game. Perhaps the work to update these other four titles was too extensive, or SNK parent company Leyou simply chose to pull them from sale after the prompt coverage of Baseball Stars 2. As of late October 2020 neither Hamster, SNK, or Leyou have addressed the delistings or alterations.

Heh, that change might not even be conscious at that point. It's 'merely' Leyou/Tencent needing to comply to Chinese law and thus propagating the change throughout the world. It is propaganda in the classic sense.

Where did you find that quote? I see it at https://delistedgames.com/aca-neogeo-super-sidekicks-3-the-next-glory/ but it's speculative there, referring to the games being "potentially delisted due to references to Taiwan and the Republic of China (ROC)."

Streets of Rage 4 publisher (not developer, thanks MW_Jimmy), Dotemu have been acquired by Focus Home Interactive for €38 million.

After the success of SoR4, and the widely anticipated Shredder's Revenge, Dotemu seem like a very safe purchase. Hope this new found stability lands well for them and they continue to focus on supporting these high quality remakes / updates.

It's the entire rationale for the purchase by Focus, retro shit is $$$

Seems the 2 major French publishers not called Ubisoft are consolidating the remaining independent French production assets as Nacon (formerly Bigben Interactive) have been Borging up several mid-tier indie developers who used to do games for Focus.

There seem to be only a few decent sized indie devs left in France now:

Dontnod Entertainment

Eugen Systems

Quantic Dream

Ankama

Asobo Studio

PlayStation is making its third acquisition of the summer by purchasing UK-based Firesprite.

The Liverpool-based game developer may not be a household name -- it's best known for working with PSVR, for the horror shooter The Persistence, and for supporting Sony's The Playroom titles -- but it is a substantial studio with more than 250 employees. To put that into context, that's larger than PlayStation's other two major UK teams -- London Studio and Media Molecule - combined.

That's a pretty big purchase. They're likely being lined up as a source of PSVR2 titles. Surprised they didn't wait until the Thursday event to announce this though, hopefully it means they have too many other things to announce. :)

It’s not really their style to do stuff like that in the SoPs, but yeah fingers crossed it means a big boy tomorrow.

Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Goichi Suda) announced that the company will join NetEase Games under the equity transfer agreement signed on May 31st, 2021.

https://www.neteasegames.com/news/game/20211022/30576_981001.html

Considering the entire subtext of Travis Strikes Again, this one is... surprising to say the least.

The Chinese have been courting quite a few of the old school Japanese developers for a while, be interesting to see who they manage to bag next. NetEase seem pretty keen and their offer is quite tempting next to what the existing publishers are willing to allow you to do these days that isn't YAS:

NetEase would like to extend its invitation to brilliant game creators in Japan and around the world. NetEase Games has been committed to the concepts of "Unleash the potential of creators" and "Bring quality interactive entertainment experiences". We hope to empower more outstanding creators and continuously create good games.

  • Robo_1 changed the title to Mergers & Acquisitions: Sony Purchase Valkyrie Entertainment

Sony have just announced their purchase of Seattle based developer, Valkyrie Entertainment. Up until this point, Valkyrie have operated exclusively as a support studio* but they've worked on some big name titles over the years.

Sony continuing to beef up their first party roster.

*Not accurate! In 2014 they released Guns Up and have two unannounced titles in development. Thanks @mushashi

Sorry, but this needs a correction. They actually have done and are indeed still doing original work, as much like Sony's own internal support studio, Visual Arts Support Group, nobody is really satisfied being the understudy forever.

GUNS UP! - PS4/PC in 2014.

And according to the now mysteriously deleted description from their own website and job listings:

Quote

Valkyrie Entertainment is based out of Seattle, Washington. We provide content and co-development services to some of the most well-respected developers and franchises in the games industry. We are also the developers of GUNS UP!, a Steam/PC-PS4 cross-platform multiplayer strategy game. Currently, we are working on several AAA Co-Development projects and two unannounced in-house titles

Valkyrie Entertainment is currently looking for a Senior Environment Artist to join our development team to help us deliver games that are high-quality, exciting, and most importantly, great player experiences!

We are currently working on several AAA-titles alongside our partners, including the next iteration of God of War, as well as in-house projects for both mobile and console platforms.

Seems Sony is wanting to become completely self-sufficient.

Even with this and Nixxes, they will still need so much external support, it isn't funny.

343i have ~750+ staff, yet still needed this lot plus whoever else to help them get their game out.

They probably need better project managers.

Cheers, added a clarification. Yeah hadn't noticed that, they seemed to have so much on their plate as a support studio that I didn't look any further. They're a bigger studio than I first assumed!
