Can't find a thread for this already (search engine isn't great)

"What If…? flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Coming to Disney+ in Summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews (Samurai Jack); Ashley Bradley (Netflix's Troll Hunters) is head writer."

Some spoilers via Lego Sets:-

Tony Stark & Captain Carter sets.

Looks pretty good, I just hope they can eventually move away from the MCU stuff and into some better storylines. Some old "What If?" comics were great, like the Venom Punisher stuff and I think would be really impressive animated well.

I hope they do "The Watcher" as a decent sized Lego Set.

I do think paying £19.99 to rent Black Widow is crazy*, I do apricate that they're clear it's available to regular subs from the 6th Oct.

*At some point the a conversation with Mrs Monkeydog over the weekend will go, "what do you want to do after the kids are asleep?".  "Suppose we could watch it but it's £20...might as well".

I think one of the episodes is truncated version of Marvel Zombies, so certainly some of it is less MCU orientated.

That's about the same price as a ticket to most big cinemas these days.

With these premium benefits:

  • Can pause the film at any time to relieve your aging bladder, so you won't miss a single MCU callback or wisecrack about Russian engineering.
  • Complimentary drink service to your seat. (You can make yourself a free coffee at the self-service kitchen sink)
  • All snacks no more expensive than supermarket prices. You can become fatter for less.
  • The only snotty nosed urchins kicking your seat and starting fights in front of the screen with their siblings will be your own. And which in this case you will find adorable because your hormones have dictated it.
  • You can come back later and rewatch the end credits when you only discover on the internet days later that there is post credits sequence that wraps up and actually makes sense of the plot, and has a truly hilarious line that you missed and everyone is raving about online making you feel like an idiot.
  • You will not have caught the Covid from a freedom loving, maskless anti-vaxxer.

Also you can rewatch it as many times as you like, so its more like buying the UHD Bluray on opening day.

Oh yeah, I also forgot this extra benefit:

Cool novelty artifacting effects courtesy of the low streaming bitrates during dark scenes, at no extra cost.

I’m looking forward to this one. I think it’s a great idea, as it serves to fill appetites left longing for the original characters.

I wish I could see The Avengers all over again for the first time. I still can’t choose a favourite scene from the movies.
It might have to be Chris Evans sprinting past the Wakandans at an insane speed with no CGI; just pure, manly strength

And this. I think not just because of the music, but because when his eyes light up he looks like a simple comic illustration, and you momentarily remember they were just drawings for the longest time.

I just really like that connection away from all the more obvious CGI, to these characters that are, in his case, 70 years old. (Incidentally, appearing in an edition with the same name as the latest Loki episode).

Also a screen a 10th the size, with some really annoying scratches due to "I didn't realised it would scratch it" kids.  Still, had the TV a whole week before they did that.

20 quid? I’m not saving much seeing it in a cinema this afternoon using my CEA card. Although to be fair, if I’m going to visit a cinema for the first time in countless months, I’d rather do so before the 19th, when such public activities will no longer be something I’m willing to risk. And my TV is fucked.

I just watched the above trailer. I really like the look of this. It's also the kind of anything goes sort of thing that I like about comics in the first place. Captain Carter looks more awesome than Steve too

Captain Britain is taken...

Captain Britannia?

Captain UK?

Captain Empire?

Captain Blighty?

Captain Brexit?

Captain Two World Wars One World Cup?

Back on topic, it seems that this will be out week to week on a Wednesday.

Not sure why it's "New Show Wednesday" over at Disney+ these days.

Looking at the Lego sets, at least one of the episodes is going to be:-

Spoiler

Tony Stark went into Space and ended up in Thor Ragnarök

As well as looking at the logo on the Hydra Stomper, it could be:-

Spoiler

Hail Hydra Captain America, since Cap's Shield logo is on the breast of the robot / suit.

Maybe just maybe Disney may have the balls to break out Captain Midlands even for a What If?

Do they not have reduced matinee screenings, in England, Scotland and Wales?

We're going to see Black Widow on Monday afternoon and it's costing like £9 altogether.

That's far more expensive - for a start I've got to take holiday (and each holiday half-day/day is worth far more than £20 to me).

Sorry!  Mistook it for the general Disney + thread!

If it's any good I'd want a live action Captain Carter series.

The girl that plays Carter Jr, I've been watching in Revenge on Disney and I think she's a far better actress in that role. They could easily put in the shoes of a full time Female Cap role, and she'd pull it off live action.

I'm hoping that when they get back the viewing figures for episodes they may option longer episodes' or a film or do separate series for them.

I think for a show with eleven episodes were going to get our moneys worth from the voice cast alone.

The last time Marcel stuck someone from the Midlands in a property it didn’t turn out well.

Were they unable to get through an invisible wall while wearing a black and white striped top?

The speculation I've heard is that Wednesdays will be the standard release date for Disney+ TV episodes, leaving space for movies on Fridays.

It has felt to me like Loki hasn't dominated online discussion (Twitter trends etc) as much as The Mandalorian, Wandavision and F&TWS did. But I'm not sure how much of that is because of the change in release days, and how much is because some of the novelty has been lost.

  • 1 month later...

Kind of wish that each season followed a more fully fleshed out continuous storyline following one of these Ify people. I eventually got over the Borderlands style animation and enjoyed the great action action scenes but even, most were more like montages rather than a well laid out scene.

I thought it was ok for a first episode.

I have to admit I have such little interest in that storyline, I liked Howard and I did like that they tried some social commentary (but this is Disney) and the big plus for me was seeing an old Dr Strange villain.

I do wonder by the ending of the episode if each "ending" is going to lead to a final bigger episode.

On board for the next one.
