That was pretty rubbish. Animation is charmless and the actors they brought in from the live action stuff sounded like they did their flattest first take and called it a day.

I enjoyed it.  Thought it was a little typical that Steve Rogers still played such a big part but overall it was a decent half hour.  I liked the animation, much preferred it to Masters of the universe for example and the actors played their roles well enough.

I never saw the actual CA movie so most of this was probably a bit lost on me.

 

That said, I was under the impression that in that Rodgers gets transformed without

interruption by a bomb, so not sure how the logic of Carter simply being in the room would change that.

It's all a bit meh. Hate the animation style. And some of the replacement voices are proper awful. I mean, sure you probably couldn't bring back Chris Evans, but are you telling me Neil Mcdonaugh was too busy to reprise Dum Dum Dugan?

Okay so I just saw that it actually is Neil Mcdonaugh doing the voice. I guess he forgot what his character sounded like in the original and thought "fuck it" and did something different.

The the mouth movements look like they were auto generated or something. Like a cutscene from a Tell Tale game. 

 

The action sequences are good though.

I thought that was great and the animation and art style is also really good. The fight in the sky was fantastic.

 

As someone who loved Loki, Wandavision and (to a slightly lesser extent) TFATWS, I can only conclude you lot are way too hard to please.

Love the idea of this but it all felt a little soulless. I agree some of the voice acting was very flat. Conversations seemed Like they weren’t really face to face which must be to do with actors and/or editing as I understand that most animations have actors recorded separately.

I loved it, but then I love Adam Hughes art style and this felt like a massive homage to his work. 

 

It's a interesting take on very familiar stories and I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes. 

 

In general, I suspect that if you don't like marvel to begin with then you're not going to like another outing of the marvel franchise. And it's probably best you just don't watch this so you can come on here and shit all over it in the most cynical and sneering way possible.

Or, here's crazy though, maybe, just maybe, let people express how they feel about a piece of media without resorting to armchair psychological analysis and personal attacks. If you get upset because people don't like an entertainment product quite as much as you, either explain what you liked (which you actually did to a certain extent, which is more than most) or if you can't do that just ignore them, don't just be that 'Why do you hate fun?' stereotype. Star Wars and Marvel threads are the absolute worst for this.

 

PS. I thought the story was alrightish, if somewhat bland, it was just the animation I disliked. In terms of Disney shows on now I much preferred the first episode of The Bad Batch in almost every respect.

I started a reply in a similar vein and deleted it. Looking at most of the comments so far it is clear the first episode has been divisive. I think most people in here are already in some way invested in Marvel stuff hence the interest in the first place and valid critique (positive and negative) on the whole.

We were just having a conversation about this in the politics threads as our current government absolutely love to do this. So going into two superhero film/TV threads this morning back to back and seeing the same thing just particularly struck me at this time. Obviously talking about a cartoon online is far, far, far, far, far, less important that the topics they use it for. But It's the same basic principle in that its used as a method to shut down discussion.

Bigger speculation - if they are all more 'minor characters' as opposed to Downey Jnr or Hemsworth being recruited then might be we the live action version of them in Spiderman or Doc Strange when they mess around in the multiverse?

It's more of a preemptive strike on the folks that like to turn up to these threads and start of with "I've never liked a Marvel film so I watched this and didn't like it, it was shit" conversations.

Because its not really a conversation is it? It's just endlessly repeating they don't like a genre.

This for an example. The very first 10 minutes of the show explained that there are multiple timelines and stories created when an action is taken. 

In this scenario:

WHAT IF, instead of going to the room upstairs Peggy stayed in the chamber and saw the Nazi set the bomb off?

 

The moment she says "No, I'll stay" the timeline has changed and they can do whatever they want. So the bomb goes off before Rogers is superhumaned, Peggy gets in the chamber instead. ... etc etc

That's the point. to play around with the story and take it off in a different direction. For the fun of it.

Seems a bit mean to pick on me, I like Marvel, I literally said I liked this. I did watch the first ten minutes, thanks. Am I not allowed to discuss the show if I had some reservations?

 

It just feels that they could have done something more interesting with the premise, a huge amount of this was just replicating an existing film and there was a vague sense throughout of "well this isn't what happened" so it doesn't feel like any of it actually matters.

 

Hopefully later episodes will be bolder and take things in genuinely new directions. A whole series of animated semi-remakes of existing Marvel movies doesn't appeal much.

I think the idea is to play with the multiverse idea set up in Loki, that events are going to happen. And the right person has to be there but What if, the wrong person is there, how would events then play out.

Well see this is the thing I hope they copy from the comic book series, we had some great What If? Anti-Heroes and the like!

 

The Assassin Spider-Man trained by The Wolverine was a great little read, and it was good to see him turn up in Spider verse again.

 

And looks like we've got a fascinating version of Spider-Man due to appear in this, looking at the Lego Mini Figures reveal!

I really, really dislike this fairly recent style of animation using celshaded 3D models and lighting. For what's supposed to be a high concept far-out series it looks visually so mundane and ordinary. I can't shake the feeling it's lazy or that it lacks style, and at a cinematic 24fps it looks like Telltale's The Walking Dead running on the Xbox 360. The stupid thing is, when it's done in realtime at a high framerate (like Guilty Gear for example) it looks wonderful. Surely Disney (Disney!) can stump up for some better animation. It's not a patch on other high profile franchise animated spinoffs or recent animated anthologies. How about getting a different studio to animate each episode, like The Animatrix or Love Death and Robots? What about tapping  Sony for an episode (or a series) using the Spiderverse team? There are so many great small studios out there capable of putting out better work than this in their sleep. Go get Cartoon Saloon to do an episode, it'd be awesome!

I think it's stylish as fuck.  I love how it looks and moves.  The voices (especially Carter's) seem a bit removed from the action but this is a tiny gripe.

The animation was oddly stiff in some dialogue scenes, but the action sequences were incredibly kinetic and had a lot of visual flare. Peggy came across as a Cap that could eat Steve's one for breakfast. Really punched the fucking shit out of them Nazis.

 

Hyperactive dialogue felt a bit like watching the original Captain America film at 3x speed, which is basically what it is. But with more British spunk.
