I'm sure I posted this already somewhere, but I still don't understand why they hired Cumberbatch for The Grinch and then had him do an American accent.

 

The could have hired Hugh Laurie, told him to do an American accent and saved a few quid. 

 

They sound virtually identical.

While I enjoyed this week's episode, I felt there was a gap in the story, at least in showing Strange's motivation, with regards him becoming imbued with superpowers.

In the original MCU universe he lost the use of his hands in the crash (and he was the only one in the car). This led to the loss of his career and status and drove him to seek a way to regain these things. Attempting to find a medical solution to his trauma would seem like the sort of thing that, for a man of science, logic, and rationale like Strange, would lead him on the journey that would eventually lead to Kamar-Taj and the Ancient One. It was triggered by the discovery of a man who had regained the use of his legs - a similar physical physical recovery to which he was searching - and not an emotional recovery from heartbreak, and certainly not the return of a dead loved one or something like that.

 

It didn't feel true to Strange's character that, even suffering from loss of his wife, that he would consider some sort of mystical resolution to the problem and it's only when he discovers the powers of time manipulation granted by the eye that he sees a way to try and manipulate events to bring her back.

 

While there's a limited run-time available in each episode, I think perhaps a few brief scenes showing Strange's decline - perhaps grieving alone in his apartment, speaking with a counsellor, resigning his position, overhearing something that might reveal him Kamar-Taj as a salve might have developed the plot better. Instead it went straight from the accident to his being imbued with the mystic arts with no real definition as to what led him there in this alternative reality.

 

TL:DR - They should have spent slightly more time showing how the accident led to Kamar-Taj and the mystic arts.

Thought it was a good episode,  loved when he sensed to Watcher being there.

 

Could potentially see the next Spiderman film doing a post credit scene reveal showing it was evil Dr Strange in that film (like the Nic Cage reveal in last Spidey)

Nothing like his usual voice but exactly like his Dr Strange voice.

Yep totally agree that was the best episode to date.  That ending really took advantage of the opportunities a format such as this offers.

I don’t know why they didn’t just make Dr Strange English when they first cast Boondoggle Cumerbund instead of making him act through that accent.

I didn’t find the fourth one as great as everyone else seems to have. The voices are SO BAD in all of them.

Felt like this show has been a bit up and down but really enjoyed this week's. Wish they'd lean heavier into the madder stuff considering this is an excuse to do whatever they want with the characters with no real MCU considerations.

This is third or fourth hand info without proof, but I've asked this before and think got an answer here. My question was why didn't they just get Bill Hader to do a Bill Hader voice for Grinch. it would have been a lot simpler and cheaper. Sounds like they hired him to be the evil Englishman of movie tradition, but once he was in place he said he wanted to do American because everyone else in it was. What they going to do? Sack the star?

I quite liked this one, but it did kind of feel like it didn't really do as much as it could have with the concept. The original comics with the theme are vastly superior, a lot darker, funnier, and briefly star

Also, there doesn't seem to be any indication if this was a two parter. The episodes have often been intentionally told as snippets of wider stories, but always seemed individually complete. In the case of this one in particular however, it really is literally half a story without a third act. If it's not followed up on it would make it probably the most unsatisfying of the bunch.

See, I get that, but in terms of script structure, unlike the other episodes, it just feels like it's missing a third act.

Was it really any more open ended than 2 and 3? They both also ended with a suggestion of what happens.

Feels like a pacing thing. You can have something feel like its winding up but also ending on a cliffhanger with a suggestion of the remainder.....but in this case it was very abrupt. I think the trick is to set it up so that the audience can anticipate that it is about to intentionally end where it is, not just carry on and then 'oh'.

The difference with those is they ended at the end of their respective story arcs, but this one ends in the middle of one.

But that one still felt like a complete story. I can see what they were trying with this one - it's a small part of a bigger tale but it did just feel like part one of a two parter.

That might give some closure. Alternatively there'll be follow ups in season 2.

Finding the whole series vastly underwhelming, the foundation is there to be great. However, the episodes are so condensed with around 5 mins of recapping and getting the viewer to speed that everything else just feels so rushed that I'm left unsatisfied. If the episodes were longer, or make them a 2 episodes for each character would have been better. The What If comics are great, but just series doesn't really do it for me and I was a big fan of this when it was announced.
