Can I double check something with you, following some Googling I’ve done?  A noob question perhaps.

So my SD card arrived today and it’s a nice and fast Sandisk Extreme Pro.  It’s a micro SD card with SD card adapter though - question being, will I lose throughput speed by using the micro SD card and adapter?

if so I’ll back it and get a full size SD card assuming they operate at the preferred speed.

The deck will only fit a micro SD. you're good.

btw, there's nothing actually in that adapter other than a PCB pads and tracks, as micro and normal SD standards share the same pinout from memory - I don't think there's anything that will affect the speed even if the contacts are further away, otherwise there would be internal SD slots on every PC like NVME drives. even the best SD cards can't really saturate USB3 before they throttle themselves from file writing for a period of time.

Ah, forgot about why I stumbled in here in the first place - because I didn't get the time to play my deck at work, I decided to sit down and play the last two chapters of Subsurface Circular to completion.

In all, I really dig it for the couple of quid it cost. It's a little awkward to play because the screen ratio makes the text tiny, but as it's a mouse-driven game you can easily set the back paddle to magnifier toggle.

Now I've started Gris because I'm late to the party - it's very lovely. I'd lament the portable screen to play it on, but the speakers blaring out that wonderful soundtrack makes up for it.

Perhaps this will help:

It does mention that some games simply don't have an option to cloud sync, so you'd have to port around saves manually.

I guess you could also use something like Ludusavi on both machines and bounce saves into a Google Drive for anything unsupported, but it's very much out of my comprehension how to set it all up.

I've found Heroic a bit diddly when it comes to cloud saves. I checked the box to autosync saves for Death Stranding, but found I've still had to manually download and upload my saves. I'm not sure if I was just being impatient.

Cyberpunk 2077 definitely has cloud saves, or at least it appears to sync on GOG Galaxy, but the could saves option doesn't even show up for it on Heroic.

I don't think I'll be using Heroic too much mind, and probably not much for games I'd be playing on my desktop, but it would be nice to see this feature work a bit better.

Great… looks like my Steam Deck notification got filtered into my junk Mail, and now Steam have cancelled my day one pre order and refunded my deposit….. 🤬

Is there anyway to get this back? Or is that it?

steam support haven’t gotten back to me (it’s been 48 hours). How long do they usually take? I’m guessing that, might be that. 🥲

Really pissed off that the actual confirmation went to junk - but my automatic cancellation came through. And seemingly no way of appeal.

Got my Samsung Pro SD Card yesterday thanks to a birthday discount they sent me :) But it seems there's no way to choose an installation destination when installing? You can only set a default location and so have to keep resetting it depending on what you are installing?

Heroic seems better for Cloud saves on Epic, but I've not had much success on GOG either. I also think it's a layer of fiddle over the top of the seamless Steam integration, so I've sort of decided I'll use it for testing any titles then repurchasing stuff on Steam if it's very good (that's how they getcha). Cyberpunk was actually pretty impressive when I tried it via Heroic on GOG. It ran better than the PS4 version did at launch which is sort of crazy

I have spent a long time with Elden and using some settings I found online I have eventually tinkered it to a solid 30fps while looking nice. And actually, apart from the tiny text and the fact I don't really like the game that much (at the end of the day it's a SoulsBourne and I've had a patchy relationship with them) I will concede it does work nicely on the deck now. That said Outward runs brilliantly on the Deck (and I assume Dragons Dogma does too) so I'm not short of choice for a roaming RPG with a dash of weirdness. I also like Detroit on it so far, as it still runs at a locked 30 on PS5 (and a clunky locked 30) and it's possible to get it running at a smoother 40.

I remain the most impressed with Fallout New Vegas. It looks great on the smaller screen and weirdly the chunky text and interface seems almost designed for a portable. And I also grudgingly have to admit, slowly it is making its use case known, as I have found myself just picking it up and getting a small amount of gaming in where I wouldn't have used anything else.

It has got a dead pixel though which is annoying. it's not too visible on lower brightnesses, but I'm considering an RMA.

After hours of dithering, watching reviews and juggling finances, I've decided to keep my 512GB Steam Deck, which arrived yesterday. I haven't had a real chance to get to grips with it yet, but it seems pretty slick so far. I'm on the road today, visiting different places for work, but I've got it next to me in the car, so I'm looking forward to giving it a good go on my lunch break.

Is there a list of things I should absolutely make sure I do with it or download? I've got five or six untouched Steam games that I'm going to run through, but I'd be keen after that to get some GameCube emulation on the go, and to be able to access the Epic store and my Game Pass games.

- Update it

- Download Steam games

- (maybe) play Steam games

:hmm:

Outside of that:

- Get Proton-GE from Protonup-QT from the app store (desktop mode). Switch to that if games don't work or you like FMV cutscenes.

- While you're in the app store, you can also grab Heroic which handles Epic/GOG.

- open the browser, search for EmuDeck. Download and run that to set up all the emulators and shit like that.

This guide should cover any painstaking details.

The only essentials in my opinion to ghet going... Outside of downloading steam games.

1. Proton-QT for up to the minute versions of Proton

2. Edge  (Beta) for the Xbox Game Pass stuff

Absolutely everything else can wait. But when you are ready and if you have a PC, then AnyDesk andc WinSCP are absolutley vital as tghey make everything else you need to do, so so so much easier.

Will this be playable on the deck based on the specs?

Assuming proton supports it, I'd imagine so.

Processor: Intel Core i3-4160, 3.6 GHz or AMD equivalent

Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 950 or AMD Radeon RX 470

They're about 7 or 8 years old now.

Is there way to get Windows retroarch saves files/save states onto the Deck for use with Emudeck?

You can either transfer them via FTP, use a USB pen or spare SD card that's formatted for Windows (the deck will read/write if it's already set up), use something like Warpinator, or set up cloud storage.

The only thing that really stops you is windows not being able to read the file system Linux uses (primarily EXT4), hence needing it in a Windows format first or using software to sidestep that altogether, because PC.

It's in that guide I listed before.

Neither Halo MCC or Monster Train are supported by Steam Deck.

Both run fine, although on the MCC you need to start with the anti-cheat disabled so you can't play online. Reach, Enhanced graphics, 60fps solid.

OK, you fucking thing, you're gradually winning me round.

Are you playing it via Game Pass or Steam?
