Remember when I said that system level FSR looked way better on the Epic version of Death Stranding than the game's own implementation? It's because it doesn't do anything.  Sometimes that game just runs really smoothly at 40fps which must have thrown me off, while other times it struggles a bit. I might knock it down to 30.

I haven't had a look into it specifically on Death Stranding, but the way system level FSR works is that you need to drop the resolution in the options below whatever the native resolution is (1280 x 800? It makes a bigger difference when it's below 720p). If it's still showing 'off' in the performance overlay, switch the screen mode between Full Screen / Borderless / Windowed.

It took me a while to comprehend it, but it can be a help when games are particularly demanding (like Generation Zero, which absolutely hammers the deck with the lighting but can run pretty well on FSR and 40hz instead of basically draining the battery in an hour at 60fps).

Back to racing games - I gave the demo of Automobilista 2 a go (the VW TSR Cup thing) with whatever the game set for me, and it ran well outside of the first corner and 22 cars going into it. Handled a lot better on pad by default than the original Project Cars ever did in the PS4 port, too.

That makes complete sense, thank you!

In the case of Death Stranding it would be a bit pointless seeing as it has FSR built in. I just thought the system level version somehow worked better when I first tried it, before eventually realising it wasn't doing anything at all. :D

There was a post where it mentioned it could be downloaded from the 'my abandonware' site so I downloaded it (and the no-cd crack) from there on the Deck

I extracted the downloaded zip and then copied over the no-cd file and then added the .exe to Steam as a non-Steam game. I've set the compatibility to Proton 7.0.3 and I think that was pretty much all I did

Steam can't even see the .exe when I try to add it in desktop mode. Did you need to run anything before you added it?

So I've just got it working (well it crashed first race, but worked second race). This is how:

In desktop mode:

1) Copied all the files from the DVD to the Deck (I put it in a folder in my home directory),

2) Then replaced the Outrun2006blahblah.exe with the NOCD version.

3) Then opened desktop Steam and added both the Outrun2006blahblah.exe and the Config.exe to STEAM as Non-steam games. Clicking browse, and show all file types and then navigating to wherever I copied them.

Then in STEAMDECK mode:

4) Choose the config.exe program, but before clicking play use the gear icon > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use > Proton 7.0-3

5) Play Config.exe and change the screen Rez to 1280*800 @ 60Hz

6)  Choose the Outrunblahblah.exe program, but before clicking play use the gear icon > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use > Proton Experimental

7) Run Outrunblahblah.exe and fingers crossed you get the best racer ever made.

It wouldn't work until I ran config first.

Hilariously this year, I resorted to first buying a PSP and Outrun, then a PS2 copy (sans PS, but £8!)  and then realising I could buy a new 360 and through trial and error re download it off my account after scrolling through 10 years of purchases.  I bought the Steamdeck, in part because I thought this might work. This is on top o my OG Xbox versions of 2 and Coast to Coast, and my till now, unused PC disk. I think I now have a working version of every version released bar the arcade versions.

Bliss. Thanks so much everyone.

I got the version from Abandonware unzipped and I replaced the .exe with the NOCD version but I just couldn't do step 3. Steam displayed the unzipped folder as completely empty. In the end I created a new folder, copied everything over and then Steam was finally able to view the files. Not sure why the original folder wasn't working but I'm playing now.

I think everyone gets that message - I like to think of it as a rite of passage welcoming us into the world of the Deck.

Funnily enough, I never got that. Might be because I got the notification in the Steam desktop client and went through that instead of email, might be because Gabe has forsaken me, who knows.

I preferred the early bird rite of passage when it had to update the BIOS and it looked like I was jailbreaking my own device because of the 90s-ass BIOS screen.

Btw, If anyone has a few minutes spare for some more blue skies arcade racing, check out Victory Heat Rally. It's not out yet (due this year), but the Next Fest demo is still around, and it's pretty darn good from having a quick play today. It's due out on switch too, but no demo there.

Anyone have a simple way to sync a screenshots folder on the Deck with something on another device? Having to upload each screenshot one at a time, and then download them one at a time on another device, and the upload not working for non-Steam games, is more than a bit tedious.

Once I've installed an Epic game via the Heroic Game Launcher, do I have to go through the launcher every time in order to play the game, or can I then add the installed Epic game as a non-Steam game? I've got Disco Elysium on Epic and Grand Theft Auto V, and I fancy seeing what they're like on Deck.

Let me find the screenshot folder location

Edit:

/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/userdata

You will then need to navigate the games via thew folder ID, but if you sort by 'last modified' or something, you should be able to find tghe latest screenshots saved.

I would SCP in using WinSCP for easy transfer.

Any way of getting blanket PlayStation button prompts across all games right throughout my library instead of howling, broken, disgusting XYAB Xbox style shite? It’s fucking up my Yakuza karaoke and disco dancing atrociously.

Nope. XBox button prompts became the standard because of how popular the 360 pad was, and any option to have other prompts is either solely in the hands of developers or people who actively mod the game you're playing.

If you use the desktop mode and access the Steam client there, you should be able to select 'View' and then 'Screenshots' from the top of the window - that'll give you a little upload doohickey, but you don't want that. Click 'view on disk', and that will open up a folder containing all the screenshots for that particular game.

If you go up two levels from that folder (it's called 'remote'), all the screenshots will be located there. You can then move them onto a usb, spare SD card, FTP them, copy to a cloud service via the browser, whatever.

I'm still surprised Heroic hasn't added something yet, but Heroic Bash Launcher should help you with that:

Yeah, I can do that but I want it like my Pi so it syncs automatically in the background to my NAS without needing to go into desktop mode or manually upload anything. Also annoying you can’t change the screenshot location!

@Siri Cheers! To be honest, though, I tend to only play one game at a time, so it's not that much of a big deal.

I got Disco Elysium up and running, and it seems fine so far. Haven't tried GTA V yet.

It sounds obvious, but it does seem that playing games through Steam directly is much less of a faff. I've got quite a few Epic games I want to play, though.

Anyway, add me, people, if you want a Steam friend: jamieatkinson18

You could attempt a symlink to move the location of something, I suppose - similar to how you can move shaders to the SD card and keep them there.

Cut and move the 'remote' folder to where you want it to be, copy the folder where it is, and then in the original location you should be able to paste it as a link. That will establish a symlink in the file system.

I have no idea if it will work across remote locations, however. You'd probably need instigate a link to the location if it doesn't do it automatically in game mode.

I will say GTA V runs really well - I have it on Steam, and there’s a little bit of faff first time round dealing with the Rockstar launcher, but when it’s running it looks good and is a pretty solid 60fps. I think it starts with the graphics options quite low, but I made it native resolution, and bumped up most of the options a notch or two, and it’s coping well. It’s installed on SD card as well, and it seems plenty fast enough to stream the map in.

I was really impressed as I still think of it as a recent game, but I guess it’s like 7 years old now.

I think I’ll look into rsync, assuming there’s cron on it. I did stick Synology Drive on there which would be perfect but it only runs in desktop mode.

I did try the FSR 2.0 mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 and it works amazingly on the Deck. It's really easy to do (get the mod from NexusMods, extract the .zip into the RDR2 folder) and it means you can run the game at the Steam Deck's native resolution, with all other graphics options set to their highest, and get a reasonable 38-40 FPS out of it. It does still crash after around 30-45 minutes of play though. This is apparently fixed in the Steam OS 3.3 beta though, so hopefully won't be too long before we see a stable release of that.

this all worked for me BUT i had to select proton 7.0-3 for the outrun exe as well. Using experimental would not boot.

now have portable outrun 2 😍

The Deck can do it with it's eyes closed but it's Star Fox PS1 edition and is great. Only Early Access but enough content for the lowish price and will only get better, the dev has nailed the feel and aesthetic.

Love it.

You cost me £7.19p - thanks for the recommendation.

I can confirm that Disco Elysium on the Epic Store works well. Immediate controller support, and apart from a couple of frame drops when you zoom in and out in the larger areas, it's pretty solid. I first played it in 2020, so coming back to now with the voice acting is excellent.
