I can advise that Horizon Zero Dawn runs like a dying dog on the deck. You’ll boot it up and play the first 30 minutes-hour and naively think you’ll have a locked 40fps as it runs really well.

Then you hit the open world proper and the frame rate tanks every time it loads in some more map or enemies show up. You can drop the resolution, put it to 30fps and use the built in upscaler to an extent but it still looks fuzzy and the frame rate still tanks every time it does some loading or the screen gets busy.

By contrast, Death Stranding will mostly hit 40fps with a few drops and that runs on the same engine.

So I've just got it working (well it crashed first race, but worked second race). This is how:

In desktop mode:

1) Copied all the files from the DVD to the Deck (I put it in a folder in my home directory),

2) Then replaced the Outrun2006blahblah.exe with the NOCD version.

3) Then opened desktop Steam and added both the Outrun2006blahblah.exe and the Config.exe to STEAM as Non-steam games. Clicking browse, and show all file types and then navigating to wherever I copied them.

Then in STEAMDECK mode:

4) Choose the config.exe program, but before clicking play use the gear icon > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use > Proton 7.0-3

5) Play Config.exe and change the screen Rez to 1280*800 @ 60Hz

6)  Choose the Outrunblahblah.exe program, but before clicking play use the gear icon > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use > Proton Experimental

7) Run Outrunblahblah.exe and fingers crossed you get the best racer ever made.

It wouldn't work until I ran config first.

Hilariously this year, I resorted to first buying a PSP and Outrun, then a PS2 copy (sans PS, but £8!)  and then realising I could buy a new 360 and through trial and error re download it off my account after scrolling through 10 years of purchases.  I bought the Steamdeck, in part because I thought this might work. This is on top o my OG Xbox versions of 2 and Coast to Coast, and my till now, unused PC disk. I think I now have a working version of every version released bar the arcade versions.

Bliss. Thanks so much everyone.

Got the config file up and running...but the .exe just wont fire up...does my box in this machine at times.

I donhave a 60hz option here though.

Suspend and resume is truly 😘. Being a PC only gamer the suspend and resume feature was something I was missing but saying that it makes so much sense being on a portable gaming device.

Yeah. I love my SD. Don't have much time these days so "proper" desktop gaming is out of the question. I'm already 2h into Stray though, thanks to Sleep & Resume.

Ex-Zodiac. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1249480/ExZodiac/#app_reviews_hash

The Deck can do it with its eyes closed but it's Star Fox PS1 edition and is great. Only Early Access but enough content for the lowish price and will only get better, the dev has nailed the feel and aesthetic.

Love it.

Booted this up after a session of Citizen Sleeper and oh my lord...

It could use a little bit of confirmational audio in the deflect-shots-through-barrel-roll department, but this is finally Starwing 2. (With some bonus Space Harrier to boot!)

I don’t know how to unhide it, but I had to format my brand new SD card in the Steamdeck for it to show up.

Aye, you need to do that, this was one that was already formatted. Got it now, had to right click on sidebar to see it again.

Finished Gris (well, not 100%, but I saw the credits so I'm happy enough with that). I think the only problem I had was the game crashing on exit - everything saved, it's just I had to dip into the guide menu to force quit.

Moving onto Later Alligator - it locked up during the initial set-up, so I had to hard reset my Steam Deck while it was going the spinning valve logo thing. But after that, it worked right away.

both of the in-game experiences have been great, though. Kinda wish steamDB was able to hook into HowLongToBeat so I can just have a collection of all the short games I can play when I've got time :D

Just finished Tomb Raider (2013) and it was brilliant on Steam Deck.

Disco Elysium stood out next for me. So just started that.

Forza Horizon 5 keeps crashing since last update, so might move that to main PC for a bit.

Need another thing to play alongside DE though.

Either back to Project Cars 2, No Man's Sky...or even Elite Dangerous from the start.

Battery life on this thing is pants. Been playing Heaven’s Vault a lot this weekend, so nothing too demanding, but I can’t even get two hours out of it. And the charger cable is so short I can’t even use it plugged in. Bit of a pain in the arse.

It does depend on what you’re playing, but I’m broadly in agreement. Truly, the spirit of the Game Gear lives on in this thing.

In other news - I picked up my Switch for the first time since getting the Deck. So small! So thin! So light! My world has been changed by Chonky Boi.

Some games just seem to take the piss when it comes to battery life - Supraland just exists to drain the battery in a single hour, even when it has the resolution of a postage stamp. I normally just slap on a wattage/GPU clock cap to see if a game's just being wasteful for no reason or not.

Thankfully, the official wall wart is long enough when plugged into the power point behind my bed, so home is sorted. At the office, I normally run down the battery over a couple of days and charge in the afternoon before I fuck off for the day.

I'm still waiting for the decent 65w+ power banks to come down in price - It's fun using my current power bank for super frivolous stuff (like running the Egret Mini remotely), so I'd take something that powers the deck for a weekend at the rate I usually play games, too.

Get a cable extension for pennies from Amazon within a day?

I’m using a Switch charger because it’s longer but that’s not really the point.

@Ry might have tried it, I gave him a freebie code for it to see what happened!

edit:

Sorry, meant to update you on how it ran. I tried playing it but it was a jaggy, shimmering mess running at about 25-45fps on low settings. Basically felt unplayable. Nothing like that video!

Will need to mess around and steal that dudes settings as wouldn't mind joining the league.

I also need to learn what all the PC graphical terms actually mean.

You're already plugged in and not moving.

On the sofa though. Not at a desk in a different room. If I wanted that I could have bought a PC and saved £200.

Pfft, I leave mine plugged in on the sofa whilst I use it at my desk a few feet away.

I'm not really being serious... but I was hinting at that, yes 🙂
