As a new steam account only created yesterday to order this I couldn't order last night, but it has let me pay my £4 this morning and is showing Q2 2022 for the 512gb version

Go back to the store where you ordered. It gives you the option of cancelling and also gives you an estimate of when you’re expected to get yours. My 512gb version says q1 2022.

As for the DF video, it's a really good one. It raises a lot of good points (as @Wipersummarised).

 

However, based on how well the AYA runs (which I nearly pulled the trigger on a while back and this is more powerful than) I'm not overly worried about it being a 720/60/medium settings success.

The biggest hurdle for modern games in a Linux environment is anticheat and/or always online mechanisms. If a company is super braindead about the solution they use, it can refuse to load or just flat out ban people for attempting to play a game.

 

As for actual performance between native Windows and Linux using compatibility layers like Proton/DXVK, it's anywhere between 'doesn't work' and 'hang on, this is faster than Windows'. Wouldn't be a PC without variable results, eh?

 

Nice to read this morning that the storage is a 2230 m2 slot, even if it's not intended to be user replaceable. I can fully understand if it's for warranty purposes, but I also feel reassured that when the SSD goes bad out of warranty, I can probably follow an ifixit article and replace the fucker instead of being stuck with something that's soldered to the board.

Well looks like I've been shafted. 

 

Ordered 512gb, co.pleted checkout at 6:01pm and now have an estimate of Q2 2022. 

 

All because the order status went to "pending" as I used my steam wallet, had topped up with £4 earlier in the day. It changed from pending to confirmed at 7:17pm. Had I used my bank or credit card i'd be sitting here with a Q1 2022.

Will all games have controls mapped automatically on the deck or will there be some setting up?

I'm not sure the point of paying so much more for the 512GB when you can get the 256 and a 1TB SSD for the same price. It's just the screen and a "keyboard theme"?

It's also the same slot even on the cheap model, so enterprising users can look at upgrading the £350 bargain version once the warranty expires.

As mentioned upthread, it's an uncommon form factor that's not really sold at retail, and you void the warranty if you modify it. It's mounted under the "emi and thermal shielding" which I think means an upgrade is a mini-screwdrivers-and-new-thermal-paste job.

Almost all PC games from the 360 era onwards have native Xbox pad support, which would map to the Deck layout. Steam also has its own control customisation facility though, along with a bunch of presets for each game. This can plug the gap for some older games without native controller support, as well as give you options for fitting mouse and keyboard games onto the deck controls.

But m2 2230 is literally the definition of a standard slot?

 

I upgraded my Mac one and that’s not a standard slot so I can’t see this being difficult.

I’m assuming that valve will release an SDK for it too or something that will make control config less of a faff.

I’m hoping I won’t necessarily miss the SSD perks if I’m mostly going to use it for retro and indie, but we’ll see. 
 

Pretty happy with how my set-up is shaping up with this addition. I’ve got the PS5 for shiny next gen beasts, the Switch for Nintendo first party, and now hopefully this for retro, indie and PC-ass PC games like Valheim or whatever. Games I’ve never had the means to dabble with until now. The last PC game I played was Champ Man 97/98

M2 is a standard slot but the 2230 card size isn’t commonly sold at retail just now. Although demand for Stream Deck upgrades might change that.

As Alex said - might be a standard slot, but it still might require dismantling every single thing on the unit and voiding the warranty to access the slot.

 

As for the 2230 - yeah, you can buy them, but there's nowhere near the choice of a standard m2 (2280 form factor, I believe) and that selection gets smaller when you factor in that it's an NVME drive instead of a standard M2 SATA. That compatibility issue got me when building a mini pc that accepted one type, but not the other.

 

Again though, as Alex says, selection will grow in time - I think the PS5 and Series consoles both use 2230 NVME, so as production ramps up there's going to be a supply from mass production somewhere. Might still be charged a premium per MB over standard drives, though.
