 No :( I keep seeing screenshots of "Jack Move" and thinking it's that game, but that's on Xbox and would be my preferred platform so it isn't that one.

Well, I've gone and bought the Dock anyway. Hopefully it'll be decent. It comes with its own PSU, apparently (I'd like to think so, too, for 80 quid).

 

I doubt I'll be able to, but I'd be interested to see if can turn it on while Docked using a controller, Switch-style.

Unpopular opinion time: I think docking the Steam Deck is a waste of time, money, and functionality.

 

And primarily, the latter is the most important. The deck is magic as a portable vessel for PC games because of the touchpads and touchscreen - that works as an instant KBM if there's dumb shit like pre-game launchers or you have to toggle controller support, which is incredibly common.

 

At least the switch has a common input ground that all games work upon, and the controller detaches from the actual unit. Putting the deck next to my telly would end up being the same as having my PC next to my telly - which I do, and frankly it's a god awful experience without two/three other peripherals. It just introduces faff that, even with all the help I've given in this thread, I wouldn't want to be part of from previous experience. It's dogshit.

I don't have a desktop PC. I can drop the Deck into a dock and I've got a pretty competent one that I can do my job from should I need to.

I'd argue that some games are just better on the big screen (and not just big AAA tripe).


Yes it's going to be limited to those games where the launch and play experience is largely pad compatible. A Steam Controller (for those who own them) might be a good solution. A mini bluetooth keyboard and track pad could too - at least for the basic launching issues rather than playing.

 

But this is the deck all over. Little compromises and limitations. To which there are a myriad of solutions some will find acceptable and others won't.

 

It's a PC and as ever, putting a PC on a TV screen with just a pad is tricky. I've hated it every time I try but I'm sure I'll try again.

 

 

In fact all this makes me think the biggest thing I'd like to see is actually Valve pushing further than a Dock. Re-release the Steam Controller for those who want to dock the Deck and re-launch a Steam Machine based on the Deck now they've (I think) got the OS and game support to a much better place.

I'm getting the dock as I like to play games handheld when I get time during the day, then continue on the big screen in the evenings. This is what I've been doing with the Game Pass games I've been playing: stream to Deck in the day and then play locally on the Series X at night. I'll probably end up using it 50:50 docked to undocked.

 

Mostly, though, I just want somewhere to stand the console up properly as I can't deal with just *shudder* lying it on a flat surface somewhere. I'm essentially paying £80 for a stand.

I don't think the official dock will work with my system as I have the JSAUX case on it. That adds around 4mm along the top around the power buttons / port etc. ILooking at the clearence on connection for the dock it's pretty close.

I had seen some screenshots where there are locations like a bar etc with some neon lighting and looking rundown so assumed it was all like that, but it seems that isn't really the case and it's a world in ruin. I think we should keep giving suggestions for good games for Deck that are adjacent  anyway.

Steam ticket logged 2 days ago with a follow up nudge today. No response at all in the ticket. 

 

I have not tried to contact Evri via the CEO address as suggested as I was trying the official Steam Path first. I was hoping Steam will chase GLS who will kick Evri but I suspect at some point they will just say its lost. Its really poor.

For me I just look at it and think "I won't need a big hunking box under the desk anymore. I can put more retro gear under there" and it's a serious contender to replace the PC full time. I rarely play the latest and greatest games, remember spending around £2k on a supped up gaming rig to get the Oculus and Witcher 3 at launch. Not played much else that pushed that rig in the years I had it.  SD cards and multiple OS's are living the dream, build whatever I want and boot when needed.

 

I'm also planning on picking up a campervan soon and sticking this in the back with a deck and portable TV will be a godsend at night. Laptop is okay but too small a screen for films and much more to lug about/secure when travelling.

 

The SD now is much different to when it launched and all the problems its having now will probably be gone in a few months time. That's the great thing about it, they don't pull a Nintendo and just leave it forever (that store can go straight in the bin). They actually make useful changes!

I considered a dock, but considering any control system I'd have to make use of it won't have all the inputs the Deck itself has, a lot of games aren't going to control as well as I've gotten used to handheld. So I could use the Deck as the controller and run a long cable to the dock, but, meh. Cables.

Dock seems pretty poor proposition for me too. The little stubby lead to connect is a little sad when you compare to the Switch, might as well just be a flat hub with the Deck lying on its back. Not sure you even need fast USB as all I'd want to plug in are keyboard, mouse and HDMI.

Or just plug it in upside down? You're not actually using the Deck in the dock directly. If I were to get one it'd live behind my TV anyway.

I suppose you might want to use it as a two monitor setup, albeit a very imbalanced one! I think the dock might be useful if you were somehow in the position of your Deck also being your PC. I actually considered this for my son as he can play his games then he could plug it in to a KB/Mouse/Monitor hub and use LibreOffice and the browser to do his homework. But it was a bit of a faff all told.

The Jsaux case actually stops it dropping into their own dock as well which seems a bit of a weird design choice.
