I installed windows yesterday on a new SD card and it seems to work ok. Found it a bit fiddly to swap OS, but I think I'd been holding the power button down instead of a press which sorta didn't work.. Really easy to install though using these instructions: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/install-windows-steam-deck

As soon as you hear the beep, let go of the buttons

Unpopular opinion time: I think docking the Steam Deck is a waste of time, money, and functionality.

And primarily, the latter is the most important. The deck is magic as a portable vessel for PC games because of the touchpads and touchscreen - that works as an instant KBM if there's dumb shit like pre-game launchers or you have to toggle controller support, which is incredibly common.

At least the switch has a common input ground that all games work upon, and the controller detaches from the actual unit. Putting the deck next to my telly would end up being the same as having my PC next to my telly - which I do, and frankly it's a god awful experience without two/three other peripherals. It just introduces faff that, even with all the help I've given in this thread, I wouldn't want to be part of from previous experience. It's dogshit.

I only use the dock for use within the desktop mode and use a wireless mouse and keyboard to do my tinkering and such like so I find that dock quite useful in that regard only.  I think of the dock like putting your car up on a jack and working under it.   I've got Ivoler one from Amazon for £37 - https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0B46337V4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm really hoping Valve release a Steam controller 2 as the original was far ahead of its time and Steam deck controls are based on it.  They are really missing a trick by not releasing a Valve based controller to use with the Steam Deck and Dock.

I have the JSAUX and it gets used for desktop mode, usually for setting up non Steam games and emulation stuff.

Not played anything on the monitor yet but interested to see how it might work docked and booted into Batocera, as hope I can also use my Pandora as a two player arcades stick like I can on the Raspberry Pi

I don't think I'll ever bother with a hitbox, but hnnnnnngggghhhh

I would need a stand for that to keep it upright and connect a full size USB, though. Like some kind of.. dock? 😅

Edit: Well, that's a great little trick I just learnt from another forum: If you're looking for controller templates to crib from for your non-steam games, you can change the name of it to any numerical game ID on Steam (either found on steamdb, or the number listed in the browser store's URL), and it will pull up all the controller configs under that game ID.

Like, say, Thatcher's Techbase - change the name to 2280, and you'll get results from Doom. Handy if you're adding GOG/Epic Store versions of games to your deck.

As a game pass subscriber, getting Windows on this thing feels more and more worthwhile as time passes.

Just out of curiosity - I presume with Windows installed i can install the Game Pass games like Prodeus, Tunic etc?

I know there's xcloud but I don't like it.

Pretty much, yeah. You might need to download the new Xbox store, but that would probably come with the bundle of updates Windows does when first installed.

I really like everything about my Steam Deck so far  Likewise I've just got Emudeck up and running and as we speak I'm downloading an archived version of Tenchu Return From Darkness for the OG Xbox

And I've tested Shinobido on PS2 and it works beautifully

Not going to say anything new here but just at end of first week with my deck, my first experience of PC gaming since editing ini files and 486 processors, and I’ve not enjoyed a new machine as much since getting a speccy as a kid.

I’ve dabbled with a few steam games, mostly flawless but one supposedly verified game that wouldn't boot at all (dev knows its not deck compatible in current version i saw after on twitter but refund a piece of piss). So much stuff in Steam going to take a while to filter it all and see what I fancy.

Then got tempted by emulation which I didn't think would be my bag at all, but emudeck seems to be behaving for me and now got all my gamecube and PS2 faves running beautifully (so much so that an old PES has saved me buying new FIFA as prefer the older simpler game). Tinkered with a few dreamcast/saturn & N64 bits with no issue. Xbox emu won’t load games so needs more investigation.

I can’t believe how good the 2000-2010 era games look and run, it’s such a sweetspot era of great games that hadn’t yet got full feature bloat.

Next intention is to get xcloud up and running.

It’s such a capable, feature rich and open tool, the fiddling makes you love it more as you know it’s your machine and nobody elses will be anything like it.

Now seen custom boot logos a thing and don’t want to fiddle with that but its in the OS, and that Gamecube one looks so good.

It’s restored my faith in gaming and the fact I’m still a gamer at heart.

oh god i didn't even think about emulating the ps2 pro evo games

They run like a dream, feel so snappy compared to current fifa and a nice trip down memory lane, almost like watching football UK Gold as Hleb and Eboue line up for Nth London Red

Would be great if someone had modded them with fully updated squads. I played Pro Evolution Soccer 3 and yeah it was fantastic. Which one are you playing?

I’ve got 2 versions. 2008 and then they kept punting out roster updates til a surprising 2014 on PS2.

I’ve got investigating the option files, which did exist, on my steam deck fannying about to do list. They gave kits, badges and stadium names iirc. Seem to remember pying somebody called ‘Daymos’ for his which was well regarded, but that may have been PS3, it all blurs after a while.

There are mods out there. No idea how to add them via emulation.

I've been playing PES5. Well I was until everything got scrubbed as I said in my above post.

I've dropped the crazy money on a dock, I'll let you know how it goes. The deck just feels half made without a proper dock experience, I didn't quite appreciate just how much it has transformed the switch.

I have a £20 dock dongle, but it's just a preposterous faff (which to be honest, the official dock, with that stupid cable, doesn't look that much better).

Now I really need an HDMI switch box or something, as I've maxed out my TV's 4 ports - anyone got any good recommendations?

They are versions of PES 2014 for the PS2, updated with 2022 squads. They are available as ISO files.

Thoroughly blown away by the glasses mentioned on the previous page. Simply plug them into the USB C port on the Deck and it's a massive screen floating in the ether. Motion and clarity are perfect, blacks and contrast are decent even in a bright room, but in the dark, or even better slide on the included shades, then we are in Oled territory, no surprise as they use Oled screens. Looks like the deepest of blacks to my eyes. Pin sharp too. Just played about an hour on Elden Ring then a few laps of Dirt 5, comfy and no problems. Will look into the Switch tomorrow, think I already have a little cable to enable that.

Was worried they'd be a bit rubs and I'd be returning them but I'm honestly very, very impressed. Can't wait for bed, gonna have an early night in fact, quick blast of Risk of Rain 2 then a few night caps whilst I re-watch the first part of Get Back, all whilst laying on my back staring at the ceiling. The in built speakers are ok too but got the Sony XMs charged for total isolation.

Windows on dedicated sd card. It means I need to swap it when I want to use windows, but works fine as I don’t intend to use it for gaming in that OS (visual studio mainly).

Wouldn't having Windows on SD Card mean the shelf life of SD would deteriorate?. Any performance issues?/

TIL that the PC version of Tony Hawk 1&2 is finally working since about 20 days ago via the latest ProtonGE and Heroic Launcher Flatpak.

I can't even remember if I've got Heroic installed, but looks like that will be my job on Monday! Game's a bigger holy grail than Destiny 2 for me, personally.

Performance isn’t too bad so far, I’ve not had any noticeable issues apart from YNAB being a bit slow in places. I do expect the lifespan to be an issue longer term, so will probably migrate to an external SSD once I’m able and just have that hooked into my dock.

I ordered a deck when they announced they were now immediately available last week. Currently packed and waiting for the courier.

I have to say, I’ve not been this excited for a new device in a while!

edit- it’s shipped!
