Indeed!  And I stand by it!  Literally never had an issue.  Don't let your kids use your stuff for starters.

The general rule is that you never need a screen guard/case etc until you do.

No one plans on damaging their stuff but once it happens it’s natural to want to stop it happening again.

Plus a percentage of those that are risk averse.

Apparently you don’t need one according to some people in this thread. They’ve never used one on their phones or any of their consoles and it’s never been an issue!

I bought these. It installed fine and you wouldn’t know it’s on there. Also have a spare: https://amzn.eu/d/3iD6MFh

Any glass ones would be fine though I suspect.

I've dropped my protector-less phone on the wooden floor at least three times this evening and it's fine.

Screen protectors are for fools.

So, all logic has failed me and I’m about to get a Steam Deck. Fine. Except I live in Oz which has two implications:: 1. It’s going to cost me. REALLY cost me. 2. No idea if I’m going to come up against a lot of registration issues etc.

I’m guessing nobody here is going to help with issue 1 but what about issue 2? Has anyone picked one up from overseas and had any issues with set-up etc?

Thanks!

Deck Dock update - after a system update and a dock firmware update the initial problems I had with audio out through the TV were solved and it’s working perfectly well now. I’m playing Far Cry and the battery is actually increasing in charge. Amazing.

2 shouldn't be a problem. It's just a pc. If you can access steam you'll be fine. Some guy on YouTube has two in China.

I tried going protector-less on my new 13 pro after being convinced by my childless friends that it was the way to go, two days later I had two deep scratches in the screen - my son grabbed it and flung it across the floor in the middle of a tickle fight. He’d never done it before and never since, but lesson learned the hard way.

You could have spent that precious time watching Shrek while booting into SteamOS.

In other news, I've been dumpster diving the free, non live service games on Steam and trying out the demo for Cultic.

Cultic's pretty rad, although the visuals are an acquired taste. Vecter is a very neat Chase The Sun clone, although the fast neon colours would probably be seizure-inducing. And Ultra Fight Da Kyanta 2 is insanity, but I need to map a key to set it to English and I didn't have time before bed.

If you have a 64 or 256 model then get an etched screen protector. It is a night and day improvement when it comes to glare.

Yeah I went el cheapo once I saw that the microSD was as fast or faster than the internal storage. So bought a 1tb and 256gb card. That and it seemed crazy to buy the etched screen only to lose the benefits with the protector.

Aha so that's why the link didn't work for me! Ah well, if that's the worst problem we have with the  Deck delivery here in the Netherlands then we're very lucky indeed. The horror stories about Evri in the UK in this thread....

GLS are by far the worst of the bunch here.. but apparently they're going to come this morning so fingers crossed.

A vault?

Reddit seems to be full with people getting a Killswitch. No idea if that'll withstand kids though.

Project has been killed O_O

I was the same before I had kids which is probably why I have so much damaged tech.

Our (10k!) PVC floor has 5-6 chunks missing from it, all of them due to kids. We chose that bloody flooring explicitly because everyone raved about how indestructible it was specifically with young children 😠 Yeah, you almost certainly have on problems if you have two kids of similar ages. Add another one with a 6-7 year age difference and you're in exponential territory.

Word of warning. Don't play Pro Gymnast Simulator on the Steam Deck. Something designed to be this difficult should not be in a handheld that can leave a hole in the wall.

In an seriousness though, has anyone else played it? It's a pretty fun.

Trying to boot Deathloop on Steam Deck in Windows 11 via the Xbox app and the load time is ludicrous.... currently at 15 minutes and counting and I'm still not in a game

I guess I'll just forget about native handheld and play it via Cloud Gaming.

It's verified "great on deck" on SteamOS, and is also in this month's Humble Choice selection. I'm sure it's fine over Cloud Gaming too mind.

Has anyone successfully paired their Xbox Series controller to the Deck? I had a number of failed attempts last night where the controller appeared to pair, flashed as connected for a split second, then went offline while the controller continued to flash as of it was still in pairing mode.

The Dual Sense worked first time, but I think I’d prefer the Series controller for use on the reg, since most games show Xbox button prompts (especially the older ones), and it’s got that nifty feature where you can flip it between Xbox pairing and ‘other device’ pairing just by double-tapping the pair button.

Is that paired to the actual Xbox as well? If so, how do you turn the Xbox controller on to link it with the Steam Deck without also waking up the Xbox? My Deck Dock arrived today and I'd like to be able to use my Elite controller with it, but also with my Series X, too.

Every time I go back to my series x it take a moment to adjust to how tiny the pad feels compared to the deck.

Yep. And the analog sticks feel like they have a concave dip the size of the Atlantic.

I think this weekend will be proper time spent with FF7R again - I started dipping into it again and getting over a boss that I stopped at before Next Fest happened. It's nice to play over lunch, but the rest of the FF7 remakes will be out if I stick to that schedule!
