I used this guide, and then followed

To get the controller working right. The rest of the above post is very critical about Windows on this device, mind - it's just not a very good user experience.

The guide itself doesn't actually recommend using an SD for the process as you'll likely make the card unusable in a few months, but I'm not overly fussed when I'm buying cheap 256/512gb storage anyway.

It might be a stupid question, but do you need to buy a separate windows key to get this working properly?

I've played some more Resi VIII now, and I think it's the most impressive experience I've seen on the Deck. Sure, it can run Cyberpunk, but when I tried the GOG version at least it was sending the fans haywire and murdering the battery. Resi VIII look incredible and runs flawlessly so far.

It actually reminds me of playing REmake on the GameCube for the first time, and wondering how the hardware could run something that good looking.

It's only classed as "Playable" on the Deck due to apparent minor sound issues, but I haven't noticed anything so far.

I'm actually unsure about this - because I was using it for Game Pass, I had to log into my Microsoft Account, and by extension it hasn't asked me to activate Windows because it knows I got a legitimate copy on another system - so far, anyway.

Worst case scenario, you'll have a watermark on the screen, and there's nefarious ways to remove it for a few hours at the very least. But I do think if you're already signed up for the Microsoft shit, it'll have a clue from your existing computer history.

So I have never played Max Payne 3 and was going to buy from Eneba but it mentions it's launched with Rockstar Game Launcher. Does this work on deck or is there a lot of faffing around to get it working?

Hi, did it work for you? Not sure whether or not to buy it. Haven't had the best experiences with games requiring launchers on SD.

I know this is a very long video but found it very helpful on the steam deck. I admit its cooled my interest but I know I get one eventually, but it does seem pretty daunting due to linux especially when he talks about clearing up cache etc and other fiddly things.

It’s as daunting as you want it to be. You can go in a dick around to your hearts content. Or, you can install a game and press play.

Very much this.

When my second Deck arrived I made a decision to stick to Steam, and I’m having a much better experience with it. I’ve only just started installing some emulators on it (which is super easy, actually).

I tinkered, but eventually just went to mainly playing stuff I could just install and play.

Emudeck is as install and play as you could want thanks to the way it sets up bios and rom folders. So much easier than when I did my retro setup on PC which requires a lot more effort

Forgot to say thanks for this. It did work, to an extent. Was too much of a faff when playing though so I ended up uninstalling :)

Repeating the sentiment .  I only play Steam games and Emulation via Emudeck.  No interest in trying to play games on any other launchers as I still have a beefy windows desktop if I want to play those.  I’m trying to keep my Steamdeck as ‘clean’ as possible.

Noticed some odd stuff with my Steam library, and games just disappearing.

Sonic Generations and Peggle Deluxe don’t show in the ‘All Games’ section of my library on the Deck. There could be more, but these are the only games I’ve noticed.

I can find Sonic on the store, and it says I own it, but it says unsupported on the Deck. I’m sure it was supported before now (I’ve certainly installed and played it with no problems), and I can’t find a way to install it.

EDIT: Ignore me, they’re both hidden. No idea why!

Presuming you're looking at this on the actual Deck, check your filters (I think it's X). I've had a few games disappear due to this

Another day, another deck question:

Sometimes, often in fact, my deck won’t turn on after it has been on charge when it’s been shut down. I need to plug it back in to power then hold the power button down for a few seconds before it’ll come on. Is this normal, a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

My deck saga is laughable now. Here is a summary.

  1. Order Deck 1
  2. Get charged twice - Ticket logged with steam and receive a refund for one within a few days
  3. 2 week wait (right at tail end of reservation system)
  4. Deck 1 ships
  5. Evri get it - keep it for 13 days without delivering
  6. Steam eventually say its lost and dispatch a new one (Deck 2)
  7. Evri respond to a support ticket to say they have found Deck 1 and say they're sending it
  8. Evri contact me and say they have received a return notice from Steam for Deck 1 so its going back to clog land.
  9. Deck 2 arrives (Parcelforce thank God) All good except that the right touch pad is fucked
  10. RMA issued for Deck 2, gets packed up and sent back (8 days ago)
  11. Get home from work today to find (you guessed it) Deck 1 has arrived on my doorstep

Now have to give it up to another week for Deck 2 to be returned, hopefully without any further drama. I will hold Deck 1 hostage for now.

Yeah, this. It's fantastic that the option is there to fiddle if you want to - and sometimes I can't resist a quick fiddle because I'm only human - but the Steam Deck is by far the least fiddly PC gaming has ever been if you choose to use it as a straightforward console. That video is bullshit if it gives any other impression.

Playing games on Steam is very streamlined of course, but even emudeck is fairly straightforward. Biggest challenge is finding the bios files and managing to copy them into the bios folder.

With all that done and using EmulationStation as a single catch all retro launcher, my Deck experience is clean and very console like. Only better because well it has all those Steam games and every retro console I could wish for. On top of that I added Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming as a non Steam game next to EmulationStation and on my connection at home it's flawless - like playing a handheld Xbox, I don't notice any lag or artifacts even racing around in Forza Horizon 5.

The Deck is almost too good like this. It's ridiculous how well it all works and how much is available to you through an incredibly powerful handheld. It's an amazing experience. Just today I had to wait an hour while my boy was attending his music class and it flew by because I was playing Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age. It's mind blowing if you think about it.

Not on the Switch version, don’t see why the PC version would be worse.

Steam reviews complain about how there's no colour-space reproduction, they are laggy, the music is glitchy, and there isn't even an options menu to adjust settings.

You're better off emulating them on a deck.

I’ve had my deck for about 3 weeks now. Never really used Steam so had no initial library.

I’ve stuck with the Steam store and buying keys from CDKeys.com. Found some amazing bargains and already sitting with 38 all killer, no filler games.

The deck is amazing; never played a handheld so much and my favourite gadget buy in a long time.
