Too much fiddling when all you want to do is play. ;)

I keep going into this thread and see nothing but complex bollocks like people using the Steam Deck in their "house". Can I just play it from my cardboard box?

Mine sits there when not in my hands.

@bradigor it ran well for me, but was plagued by random slow-down events where the game would become a slideshow for somewhere between 30-60 seconds before returning to normal; I stopped playing it as a result.

I’m not sure I recognise the comparisons to Sega Rally, except that the first race has you drive a Toyota Celica.

TIL: the Steam Deck is kind of shit for my train journey.

Well, I really do mean my train journey - it's broken up so much that it just makes it a complete ballache to lug it around:

I would've thought this would just make the instant pause / resume feature even more useful?

TBH I've found myself leaning towards more bitesize experiences with the Deck anyway. Lots of platformers, puzzle games, that sort of thing. Maybe plugging into a TV when I want to game on something that needs my full attention for an extended period to enjoy properly. Kind of confims my suspicions (although I've only had it for a week) that I would be just as happy with a device that was a bit less capable than the Deck if this meant it could be smaller. Although I'm not sure how you could size it down without affecting the (fantastic) controls, particularly the trackpads. Which I'm finding more useful than I thought I would, not neccessarily in games but in dealing with launchers and configuration issues and such. Having a decent facsimile of a mouse and keyboard available is very useful for the moments when the device / software reminds you you're using a PC. Valve have done a good job of making sure all this functionality is still available when you plug in an external controller, so it doesn't neccessarily need the trackpads, but it is much slicker with them.

Basically I think when I get my desktop sorted in the new year and the Deck is not longer my only option for PC gaming, I will likely strictly use it for lower-end gaming and while travelling.

Can I ask and it depends on usage but what kind of battery life are you guys getting?. I know there's reviews but wanted to hear real world usage please if possible.

It massively depends on what you’re doing. Using emulators to play old games it lasts for 6-7 hours, but a new power hungry game the fans really kick in, it gets hot and runs though the battery in about 2 hours. In generally don’t play it from 100% to 0% though so hard say when it would actually give in.

Thanks, I knew I wasn't going to get a definitive answer. But 6-7 hours for emulators sounds great.

Yep. About 5-6 hours on emulated stuff and old PC games, 2-3 hours on previous/current gen stuff and any super intensive emulation (Switch/PS3) - extend further if it's a much more simpler game.

Or half an hour of Generation Zero at double the framerate of the Series S version because fuck it

How much do they scale? I wonder if they can help with my low vision issues especially with games that have small UI elements and text.

If you wear glasses they come with a clip on for prescription lenses. Just take them to opticians to have some made.

It's not the glasses. I am legally blind and use a lot of accessibility features. However many games don't have what I need when using a smaller screen, so having the equivalent of a 55" TV in my right eye could be massively beneficial

Well, I really do mean my train journey - it's broken up so much that it just makes it a complete ballache to lug it around:

  Hide contents

- 10 minute walk to the train station out in the open

- 15 min train journey

- 10 minute walk to get to the bus station out in the open

- 15 minute bus journey

- 5 minutes walk to work (and however long it takes to get a chicken fajita wrap from the food van)

I'm still going to take it to work when I'm driving in when I got a good 30 min lunch break to blast Fallout, but unless I'm going to London, a plane journey or getting a lift it's not going to be amazing.

I'd still definitely take it for hotel stays, though. Makes me wish I could afford more overseas holidays :(

im in a similar boat and I can’t recommend enough the Miyoo Mini. It's like a tiny next gen game boy, which with the onion is, has a game switcher that is just perfect for a brief moments. Since getting it earlier this year I’ve put 40hrs plus into it.  Just glorious.

Everything is sharp and legible. Deffo not endorsing it for someone with eye problems, mind. Any benefit from easier reading may be negated by having two Oled screens an inch from your eyes. 🤷‍♂️
