Fuck sticks. My right trackpad has gone all loose and the haptics are no longer working. Is there something software side I can do it do I need to send it off?

Secondary to that, if I send it with my changed 255gb drive in it, an I likely to get back a new one with a 64gb or will they actually attempt a repair?

Noob (but wanna be sure) question: if i tap the power button into what i assume is sleep mode, will my downloads continue overnight?

Nope. It's sleep mode, but it's more like a standard PC's suspend option with quick resume functions baked in than a low power state like modern consoles. Better to be in desktop mode with the power settings changed to turn off the screen after x minutes while not turning off the machine, or turning the brightness down.

I'm at over 2000 Steam games at the moment. It's ridiculous.

Many of those are review code/promo etc

Jeez! I only have 879 (great on Deck titles...) The full total (also from years of bundles and review codes as well as sales) is too intimidating to type out...

If anyone wants to play Sonic Generations (doesn't work as standard) just do the following:

Custom Proton: GE, Set launch options:

DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%

Go to main game and Play, then choose configure. Make sure to set all the graphics options to high and then Save & Quit.

My wish list is growing rapidly, btw if anyone would like to add me as a friend my code is 1400607557.

Also any recommendations for absolute newbies welcomed, be it games or tips when starting out etc. I am completely out of the loop when it comes to PC.

Are you in desktop mode? I ask because

I’d say they are most likely to send a replacement model, so you might want to swap the drives back if you still can.

On a more positive note, whilst they won’t repair any damage/malfunction caused by unauthorised modding, that shouldn’t affect you as I can’t see how a replacement drive would affect the right trackpad.

just start small and simple - there is a world of fun and tinkering ahead of you but pick a couple of smaller green tick verified games and get a feel for installing and launching things, no point starting with something unsupported that is possible to play but make take hours of fiddling to get there.

No it's in normal games mode.

Will have to do an RMA I think.

They still work but haptics are either gone or very very weak

Don’t buy a full price game on steam unless you’re unsure and want to use the 2 hour refund policy (you can trigger a refund if you’ve played under that amount).

There’s loads of places you can get significant discounts, some a bit more questionable than others but greenman gaming, cdkeys, fanatical and even eneba have never let me down.

Enjoy that the Nintendo Indie Directs will mostly apply to two of your gaming machines now.

There is a setting to change the strength of haptics, it's worth checking what they are set as.

I RMA'd (took two or three weeks) for the busted L stick, and y button, and they are fixed, but the returned or new unit (not sure) now has a huge imbalance in strength of haptics between the L and R sides, which the setting doesn't fit. The steam deck is great, but the build quality seems terrible. (I'm not bothering to send it back again).

You want games? Here's some games

For stuff that you can just buy or grab from Steam in that guide, I would say: Dominion, Rolling Bird, Helltaker, The Looker, Skye, Pony Island, and BallisticNG.

Once you want to venture outside of the world of unverified games (if you're new to PC, it'll take a while!), the first two things you'll want to find out is:

How to install Proton GE, using ProtonUp. This provides fixes for some games that have been marked unsupported (namely, games with a lot of FMVs that are encoded with licensed formats)

Adding a non-Steam game to Steam. This lets you browse Discover on the desktop and download free games from there.

With those two separate things learnt, you can try the other free games in the guide by downloading them, adding them to Steam and setting it to use Proton.

And yeah, Black Mesa is a fan remake that Valve gave official blessing to because it's that well made, from my understanding.

Is Black Mesa worth a punt? I love Half-Life, is this a remake of kinds?

I had a bit of difficulty with controls at first, so make sure to switch to the community config, then it works great.

There was a lot of visual glitching too, though admittedly I didn’t experiment with settings much.

Did all the tests and tried all the fixes. So will try and get it sent off next week.

That’s brilliant, thank you :)

Know some people been looking at Civ VI and the like, the anthology with all DLC is currently just under £12 on fanatical for the Steam codes (it's double that on Steam)

Damn...missed it. Saw this post last night and thought to myself that I'd grab it tomorrow (Today). Just come to buy now and it's gone up to £21.24

EDIT - Got it from CD Keys instead. Was a bit more expensive at £16 but still a good buy I think.

Apparently the internal storage is very easy to upgrade. Many have done it at home.

As per the posts just above the real difference is the screen. But even then it's probably not that big an issue.

I went biggest because I'm lazy and it's only money

Indeed it is. I bought a 64GB SD and grabbed a 512GB NVMe for £36.

Minue the etched glass, I have a 512GB unit that cost £386.

In the swapping of internal storage and needing to send the RMA.

If they send a new unit will my 256 drive just be recognised when I put it in, or will I need to format it all with an image again?

Same with putting my 64gb drive back into the unit I am sending off

Oh, one other tip for new deck owners:

Back Paddle buttons. Put your fingers on the flat back of the handheld and press there, not on the handles as you would an Xbox elite controller. Your hands will thank you.

Playing Arkham Origins and it's just brilliant on this. I think it's the only Arkham game I haven't played multiple times so is the only one that feels fresh to me, too.

I've mentioned this Deck is for my brother - I might pick one up for myself.

Is there anything in particular I should be using them for, any helpful universal settings or something? I haven’t had cause to use them at all as yet.

Will Civ play ok with traditional pad controls, or using the touchpads?

Including, although not limited to:

- L3 and R3. Amazing!

- Built in Steam OS functions, namely Magnifier and Open/Close keyboard

- Binds for D-Pad if I want to keep my hands on the analogues (handy for flasks in PoE)

- cloning a button but mapping it for a turbo function (ie. Running in GTA4)

- binds for keyboard buttons if the controller is entirely mapped to standard controller functions (similar to the above SteamOS stuff, but things like menu shortcuts, etc)
