The lack of Game Pass is really the only downside I can see to this, and honestly I don't think I'd mind buying a little more on Steam for games I'd want to play on the move. I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to add some form of Game Pass for Steam in the future if this really takes off, like EA have for EA Play.

Aye - Valve forked Wine to create Proton. They'll be going hard at supporting the Steam Deck hardware and OS as a priority over other Linux flavours for the time being.

That's why I have high hopes - instead of a general version of Proton that's aimed at a bazillion different configurations, it's Valve themselves creating one fork of Proton specifically aimed at one specific OS and one single specific hardware configuration.

It's a good idea but you need to be online to play Gamepass games. When traveling I rarely have WiFi anyway.

Still be a nice option though.

The importance of other games stores and other ways to use the device will heavily depend on how broad your steam library is. If you have a few games on Steam and a tonne of free ones on Epic Game Store/Game pass to play then that completely makes sense to look for a solution for that. I suspect when Valve bring the Steam OS interface to replace big picture mode on windows that could be the simplest solution for the plain "it just all works" while keeping the interface intact so in future install windows and forget about it may be ideal.

If on the other hand you have a stupid steam library (don't look at me weird - humble bundles/monthly and 10+ years of steam account add up) if 1000-1500 games+ it literally doesn't matter for gaming to use it than any other way out of box. I could own the deck for 10 years and barely touch a fraction of my collection.

Yeah, while I say the kind of games I prefer to use a PC for it's not ideally suited to, if I found myself on holiday with it I would not be short of stuff by a looooooooong way.

Very interested in this,  but I cannot for the life of me find a download link. It's just a tar.gz which I could bite the bullet and build but it seems to have a shitload of dependencies and that's gonna be a pain when the site claims it has an AppImage ready to go.

https://git.sr.ht/~thestr4ng3r/chiaki

Anyone see it? The older version on Github has the image but is an old version that doesn't support PS5.

I read a post on reddit the other day but I can no longer find it.

Anyway the gist of it was about the size and weight of the Steam Deck. Apparently the Deck is about the same width as a Switch with Hori split pad attached. It is about 20-30 grams heavier that a Switch with the Satisfye Pro grip attached.

So while the default Switch is lighter and smaller by the time you make it ergonomic there isn't a great deal of difference.

Personally I am not able to play the Switch for longer than around 20 minutes before I get hand cramps. I was considering buying either the Hori grips or the Satisfye grip but I'm now thinking about selling my Switch.

The Hori Grips make my switch much more comfortable - its painful without it to the point I always used it dock with pro controller before I got them.

I know there are parts of this forum where it is blasphemy to poop on the switch but the joycons are fucking terrible from every perspective.

I agree.

When I first bought my Switch I thought I would be fine using the controller add on that the joycons slip into. I am not exaggerating when I say it is the most uncomfortable controller I have ever held. Add in tiny buttons and analogue sticks that have no travel and joycons can die a fiery death as far as I am concerned.

Its why, for me personally, the Deck is a lot better value than a switch. I had to drop £70 on a pro controller and if I want to use it in handheld that's another £40-50. Add in the Switch tax on games and honestly I think the Switch is the most disappointing console I have ever bought.

God, every time I see one it looks even bigger. The Game Gear looks small by comparison!

And then there's those of us whose PC game libraries look like this...

(plus Gamepass, of course, and I can't be arsed to check my Origin or uPlay libraries)

I have stupid many games on several platforms :(It's a hard life.
