Steam Deck (handheld from Valve) - shipping is 4-8 days from NL to UK

I do have a 512 pre-order that I’m going to cancel when I get round to it, but it’s not going to do anyone any good as it’s a Q2 one anyway.

Unless the early adopters are raving over something I’m not currently aware of, I just don’t think I’ll get any use out of it.

My favourite part of the entire process thus far is that, whenever someone attempts to make a criticism about the device, it is willingly met with a chorus of people responding with "Yes, [reason] is an absolutely awful thing about the Steam Deck, and that's why you should cancel your preorder immediately".

Which is, really, completely correct. If you're reading this, you should cancel your Steam Deck pre-order.

I’m going to keep my preorder and when it arrives, keep it sealed and mint in the loft, and in 2041 it will be worth over £300.

Joking aside, holding onto mint PC hardware is an interesting prospect - it's not like dedicated consoles where the software market locked into that ecosystem means the hardware retains value.

OTOH, whenever a sealed Voodoo 2 or 3 card pops up, it does sell for about the same or more than the original retail value, so there is a market or there and it's just about the same age gap.

Speaking about Voodoo - that reminded me to check if the last version of PCEm supports Linux, and it does thankfully. Lotus 1 2 3, perfect for Deck.

@Siri You joke, but I totally cancelled mine, as I realised it was just more tech guff I honestly didn’t need.

I have a great gaming PC, a Switch, Bone and PS5. It was just new tech lust. But as the months have worn on, the idea of it has paled a little bit. Glad I cancelled, I might be back in a year or two if/when they do a V2 with ‘dat’ OLED screen, and an even beefier spec. But no point being an early adopter.

So, yes, in all honesty, anyone else on the fence about cancelling, it actually felt good to let it go, for now.

Lol, have I fuck. 😆

I cancelled my 64GB/512GB preorders. It looks great, nice toy, but I rarely use the 'gaming' devices I do have and I want less choice rather than more.

Spoiler

I'm serious.

I got my order for the 256gb in 6 mins after it opened and I've got a Q1 22 shipping date :(

I wouldn't mind but it's supposed to be a Christmas present for the eldest so I'm going to have to give him a piece of paper with one drawn on with a "unlucky, lol" written underneath it.

You're off the hook now anyway.

Well yeah, but to be clear what they have said is the ones scheduled for Q4 2021 have moved back to Q1 2022 and everyone else accordingly. So my Q1 2022 slot will now be Q2 at least. I'd not be surprised if there were further delays.

I think 2 months of delay is extremely optimistic. I ordered an ebike in June. They said it would be later than usual because of supply constraints - August, they said.

Still no sign. Latest? 'We hope to start production in 2-3 weeks'. Every company is underestimating the delays, either deliberately or because their suppliers are just as desperately in the dark as everyone else.

Q2 here. Oh well, I can concentrate on being completely clear of bills over Christmas.

Hopefully delays in hardware means they can either work more on SteamOS or releasing a public version of 3.0 so people can get to grips with the allegedly much better Proton layer and flag any issues.

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but how do you change your shipping address? I’ve looked several times and can’t see to find it.

I can't recall for sure, but as you haven't actually ordered a Deck but instead have just reserved a pre-order, you might not have given one yet.
