Having had a think about it, this will be a niche product. Valve/Steam have always put out hardware with the attitude of 'well here is a thing, if you like it, enjoy' and nothing.

No marketing, no fanfare. I am partially thinking they may push this a little harder, but only a little.

I don't believe this will be of that much interest to Steam. The reason being that we have to consider how the Steampal Deck actually fits into Steams business model.

- It probably won't be profitable in and of itself.

- It won't grow the Steam user base all that much.

- You can actually install windows and run Steam's competitors without issue.

There is no real reason for Steam to put this out other than its kinda cool and some people will really enjoy it. There is the argument that it broadens PC gaming to a wider audience, but I feel that will be relatively insignificant.

Is an anti-glare panel coat really much of an added production cost or only on the biggest model to sway the buying decision in that direction?

Apple started doing a similar etching (it’s not a coating) process for their £5000 HDR reference monitor and the new iMacs and it by all accounts is a really sophisticated process, and they warn against cleaning it with anything but the softest possible cloths and some water. You can’t mend it if it scratches, IIRC, just replace the sheet. I’m honestly a bit surprised to see it at this price point and on a touchscreen of all things.

I get the impression most of Steam’s projects happen because someone at the company thinks it will be fun to work on, strategy be damned.

If there's any strategy it's probably to make the underlying ProtonDB a bit of a target spec, providing a more consistent base level of game quality throughout the Steam world.

Possibly the closest you'll get to a dedicated Xcloud handheld, as well.

I love how this handheld is fully backwards compatible with the PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast, Wii, Wii U, etcetera etcetera. Is there a working Switch emulator out yet?

Yes there's a couple of switch emulators out there that are pretty good.  Yuzu and Ryujinx are the two main ones at the moment.  The Switch Pro is here

To those who used the steam controller, honestly how playable are traditional keyboard/mouse games on the trackpads?

I love my steam controller and yes the trackpads are pretty good for fast movements.  However for FPS's I make use of the gyro which has me thinking does this thing have a gyro function.

Yes. It's right there on the product page.

It don't think it's entirely fair to apply the "release and nothing" brush to Valve hardware

Steamlink was a great product. It still just works. It's essentially ended up being replaced by Smart TV/mobile apps. It still had an update recently for Series controller compatibility.

The Steam Controller was a heroic failure. Steam input is arguably a success. Deck is really a Steam controller V2.

The Index is selling really well for a $1000 VR headset.  It's the best high end VR experience.

Steam Machines were all over priced hardware, with a limit software library.  They deserved to die.  Deck seems to have learnt it's lessons.

I'm not any more convinced the Deck isn't a niche product than you are.  The real product here, if it works, is the the new Steam OS.

Fantastic. So you can buy this, load it up with NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and Switch emulators and you have the perfect Nintendo handheld! Oh and also a GBA, DS, and 3DS emulator because why not. More like Switch Pro Turbo EX plus Alpha

Main question....

Will it run the steam version of Outrun 2? (not for sale now but if you grabbed it when it was on sale in to 2000s you can always redownload/play)

If its yes! Then I may have to pre-order!

Exactly!!  it really is the most flexible machine ever.  I was a bit WTF at first but you can have potentially every game ever on the move and have a option to plug into a tv or monitor and treat as a normal desktop PC then use any controller and peripheral.  Bonkers.

Someone else mentioned it earlier in the thread and there's no reason why it wouldn't, however Outrun 2 isn't optimized for pads. You can get it to work with pads but it's a fanny, I gave up trying to get it to work through Steam Link.

This looks cool. I’ll be interested to see how Valve support it and how seamless the experience is. A PC plugged into a TV in big picture mode never really came close to the console experience in terms of ease of use and not having to fiddle about. It all felt a bit hacky. I hope this feels a bit more polished.

There's another way: load up a PSP emulator on Steam Deck and fire up Outrun 2 PSP. Scales up really nicely, so should look even better than the original PSP version.

I'm very interested in this, so much so that I've closed the Amazon Switch OLED tab I had opened for when pre-orders open for that and now got the Steam pre order page open

Are you absolutely sure? Because from what I've read, the Switch OLED has a new hat better stand.

really good point, the stand is a big thing. I just pre-ordered one via Amazon to see for myself that sweet stand magic.

Well that sucks, apparently to stop new account scalpers you need to have made a purchase on your steam account prior to June to be able to pre-order. Orders only open up for everybody on Sunday.

I didn't have a steam account until this morning.

That sucks.

Is the memory type different in the upper two models? I know the cheapest has slower memory but is there another different between the mid and upper tiers?

Speed wise - no. Just capacity.
