Tokyo Olympics 2020(1)

I had forgotten that the Olympics was starting really, and had only thought about it in passing and from a covid perspective...

Seeing this opening ceremony whips me right back to 2012 when that summer was really good. ( I was in London and skeptical about the whole thing, but got wrapped up in it and spent a lot of time in various parks watching sports)

It really feels like it was some highwater mark and things have been downhill since then.

Yeah, the time difference is going to be a bitch, like I think the skateboarding is on at some stupid time in the morning on Sunday, I'd really like to watch it even though I don't believe in scoring skateboarding it's interesting to see how it plays out. Oh and did you guys know that they allowed skateboarders to not be tested for cannabis :) Bit hypocritical with that American athlete who's lost out but good for the skaters, it's an intrinsic part of the culture.

I'll be honest, there were bits of that that really hit an emotional high note for me. As I said I do love the games because it brings so many people together, just for a little bit, and shows what we can do together.

So whilst I thought that was mostly dull. It was still an Olympic opening ceremony and I still got emotional. So it worked.

I fully expect to have a jolly good cry at least once over someone's Olympic performance.

Bare in mind, they had an extra year to put this together...

Bits of the ceremony was good but I wished they kept the original proposal.

Mikiko would have had Akira and Mario in the ceremony, they shouldn't have sidelined her.

But as I think they pointed it out in the English commentary, the Japanese as a nation (my brother included) are rather miffed that the whole thing is going ahead at all. So they had to tone it down and not make it into a celebration as such.

But to a western eye that made it look dull, rather than respectful.

Yeah it did feel like they'd just taken a big black marker to the original script and not bothered to try and edit it all back together. Things would start, look promising, then just end.

I imagine that was down to the Cornelius bullying situation.

Apparently stuff has been happening in the archery. But you wouldn't know it from what's getting shown on TV tonight!

Every Olympics, I hope to watch archery and shooting; every Olympics, the BBC avoids showing them live so I never get to see more than highlights. :(

All the coverage we had in 2012 spoiled us!

It's probably because the timezone means a lot of Olympic coverage is overnight when no one is watching so they've decided not to show it. Or because this is the first games where they are sublicending it from Discovery instead of directly from the IOC and the new deal might have restrictions. If you want to see everything there is currently a free 3 day trial of Discovery+ with a discount of £29.99 for the year if you want to try their coverage

On Sky, Eurosport have 9 channels of Olympics going. Not sure if the same for Virgin, BT etc and if it’s free to me as we pay for Sky Sports?

I’m not into cycling but watching this road race is great as it’s giving you a proper look at Japan. Aerial shots of little communities, the ride up Mount Fuji etc. So want to go.

There's a nice channel on YouTube that I watch, which is a guy basically going on walks around Japan with no commentary. He/she is Rambalac and whilst a lot are city based, there are a number of more scenic videos. Some of the rain walks are incredibly serene too.

Archery on right now, in case you hadn't seen.

I'm currently feeling similarly about the tennis though - presume I need one of the paid options to see any significant amount of that.

The reason the BBC got anything at all is because Discovery feared a backlash if it was all moved to their own free channels

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/oct/12/bbc-olympics-discovery-rights-eurosport

Quote

The BBC was able to strike a deal to keep showing the Olympics partly because US pay-TV giant Discovery feared a backlash if it refused to share its rights to the Games with the corporation.

Discovery, the owner of Eurosport, struck a shock £920m deal to take control of the rights to the Olympics from the BBC in the UK as well as across Europe from 2022.

Discovery later struck a sub-licensing deal with the BBC as its free-to-air broadcasting partner in the UK; in turn the corporation allowed Eurosport to start broadcasting the Winter and Summer Olympics from next year.

Not sure why the article mentions 2022 as the start date, there must be an interim deal that covers the Tokyo games.

With the article being from 2016, I can only assume something had changed. Could be that Discovery's deal came into play in 2021, could be something else.

The Mikuni Pass climb was a good one in the hard fought men's road race today. Cool to see all those drift marks on the twisty bits. Then they even went on the Fuji Speedway. So unnatural to see a peloton of riders go around the track and climb that uphill corkscrew.

I do like the cycling but will happily admit not every stage is worth watching. Thankfully, most of the times, the scenery is. Olympic men's cycling road races always provide a great look into countries. Loved the Beijing, Rio and Sydney footage.

Someone on reddit shared these short touge films a while ago. It's 'slightly' driving focussed but the 140 odd Toyota/Japan Tourism Board promo's provide a great and very relaxing look around Japan. Those moats filled with Koi at the start of episode 3 are just
