How's Isaac's chat? Eurogamer seemed to think it soured the experience.

He only talks during pre-existing dialogue scenes, it’s fine. The way some people have reacted you’d have thought he was Nathan Drake-ing his was through the whole game.

I always preferred Isaac as a voiceless, faceless protagonist in the original, but that cat’s been out the bag for a decade now. It is slightly odd he doesn’t look more like the previous version, although it’s hardly Chris Redfield in Resi 7 and if I hadn’t played through DS3 recently I doubt I’d have noticed.

Isaac talking doesn't feel out of place or forced at all - I do prefer his silence in the original but I wouldn't say it spoils anything.

And even if it DID spoil anything, it would be outweighed by the fact that the bit with the asteroids is now fun.

I'm guessing the consensus is that this is an excellent remake? I never actually finished the original game so considering giving it a go.

But... How scary is it? Is it jump scares or does it instill a really unsettling sense of dead? I might be okay with a bit of the former, but not necessarily the latter...

The last survival horror I got through was Signalis, but I think that was honestly more spooky than unsettling.

It is a gold standard remake. As for how scary it is, I'd say maybe 5-6/10 (my benchmark is something like PT being fking scary). You feel suitably geared up to take whatever shows up in the dark so the dread is never that much of an issue. Has the odd jump scare.

Mannequins in Condemned.

Though I'd argue the absolutely most terrifying game I have ever played is Alien Isolation. This remake evokes a bit of that with its setting and atmosphere, but isn't as scary because there's no Alan running around.

Yep the alien being some unbeatable divinely scary foe is what makes it so scary. Pretty much most stuff in dead space you can saw/shoot and then stomp on like you're at a rockit event

I am bricking it just thinking about playing Resi Village in VR. It’s gonna be terrifying isn’t it :omg:

Where does Resident Evil 2 remake fit on this scale? I found that about the perfect balance for me, P.T. levels are a definite nope.

The original Dead Space is about the same, although maybe a bit more jumpy, Resi 2 has its moments though.

Considering how well VII worked on the original hardware, I'll only be playing it with dark-coloured underpants on.

I don’t think Dead Space is particularly scary. None of the monsters evoke a sense of dread that makes me want to put the game down. There are jump scares, as monsters pop out of vents and the like, but again, these are usually at a distance, and it rarely induces panic by dropping something on your head.

Where Dead Space does excel is tension. I’ve played through the original several times, and I still have a slightly sore neck muscle after yesterday constantly finding myself tensing up. Few horror games have the capability of Dead Space to have me constantly turning around the check.

All of this is aided by spectacular sound design - distant rattling and movement, tinkly piano effects - and the fact that it’s willing to show you just enough monsters that don’t jump out to fight you that you never quite feel safe.

Amazing game really.

Apparently Valve have released a hotfix for this on Steam Deck, now it runs much better if not entirely smoothly. Motive themselves are also readying a patch which should improve things further, good news then.

I agree there is much to love about the game but I loath forced standby doors whilst the unskippable comms occur.

I hate the cheap damage even more. The amount of times I get sprung something an lose a couple of notches of health is infuriating.

It's not like I can load up a checkpoint to avoid that in the future, as the checkpointing is incredibly ungenerous.

I am still having a good time, but it is rather frustrating at times.

There are options around imminent gore/triggering scenes...which you can turn on so you can at least steel yourself for what is about to happen. Or even skip entirely.

That seems like a fairly revolutionary concept: a tension filled jump scares game where they give you the option to turn off jump scares?

I appreciate that they made that effort but I would personally just play a different game. It's why I never went near P.T.

I've hit some performance bugs on PC. Upgraded my kit, came out of the menus, and it was a slide show. The only thing that fixed it was going into the inventory and back out. That sorted it.

Another was during a small cut scene where control of Isaac is briefly taken away. The game wasnt doing anuthing particularly strenuous, but it turned into a sideshow again until I got control of Isaac back.

Well I was looking forward to this but GetDeviceRemovedReason failed with dxgi_error_device_hung has decided to ruin my day.

Something to do with DirectX global illumination? Maybe try messing around with related graphical settings?

I finished this last night. First time ever playing through. I enjoyed the story (So much that I'd like to play 2 now). Graphics were solid. Sound design was great but to be honest I was sick of the moment to moment gameplay well before the end. It became a chore.

Are the side missions new? Especially with "Can't progress until X occurs"? Don't recall them

Narratively there seem to be a few more earlier hints about what's up

I can't recall - do you back track to areas organically or should I be remembering where all this security doors are?

Yup, new. Progress is locked behind story progression but none can be failed until very late in the game (and the game warns you even then).

And yes, this involves backtracking. The map really does you no favours when it comes to that, I just completed a "collection" mission and it was far from fun. The map could really truly use a custom marker option.
