Do we think there is any hope that theyre probing for interest in a DS4? Or is this remake likely to just be a one-off?

The issue with the DS franchise is its complete lack of identity. Each entry is vastly different; 1 is slow paced linear horror, 2 added more action, 3 is a full blown Michael Bay-esque action set piece. If this remake does well, what's a future remake of 2 or 3, or a brand new 4 going to be? I do of course hope Dead Space 4 is coming and follows in Dead Space 1's footsteps completely ignoring the events on 2 and 3.

Knowing EA it'll be the path of least resistance = most profit so if this does well a DS2 remake is likely

Might not be a bad thing if Motive can ease up on the action and bring some horror back to it. Never played DS3 as only heard bad things so surely that would actually be a compelling prospect for a good remake.

Even then, I don't even know how to run non steam games on my deck as I've never bothered. I'll be playing it on my 4090 maxed out thank you very much sir

They've said that is indeed the case. If this performs well there will be more, if not they will kill the franchise.

3 is actually not that poor an action game, it is a poor Dead Space though. Human enemies with guns, waist high cover, practically no horror, crafting fuelled by micro transactions. It had a neat idea with coop as well where you and your coop buddy would see different things. Also, you could craft the most ridiculous guns (like a shotgun taped to a shotgun).

So I played the original trilogy over Christmas 2021. Loved the first, second I actually really enjoyed too. As for the third... yeah, @df0 hit the nail on the head for my thoughts: it's a decent action game, but not a good Dead Space. Have been looking forward to the remake, am keeping a keen eye on this thread for peoples' impressions.

I played Dead Space 3 on the floor of a pokey back bedroom using a tiny portable telly soon after moving house while waiting for an appointment to remove an impacted, infected wisdom tooth. The microtransactions were still the worst part.

While I'd rather see a DS4 rather than another remake, tbh I dont see a reason they could use that as a chance to 'soft reboot' in terms of going back to more vanilla horror. I dont mind a franchise doing a bit of genre hopping between titles*, and in fact think it can be a good thing if done well. Problem is, most seem to agree that the execution around DS3 was a bit naff. I never played it, but liked what DS2 did well enough.

*funnily enough I'm mindful of the Aliens franchise here, which is oddly appropriate given the 'guns strapped to guns' comment. :D

Some of the original ideas around DS4 sounded great btw, and could probably be pulled off better now than back then. I seem to recall possible ship-boarding, survival in a slightly more roguelike form as you roam around for bare essentials.

You lot ever played The Persistence (supports both VR and non-VR)? Slow paced first person rogue-like horror. Plays nothing like Dead Space but in some way feels like it. Lineair and deliberate, I rather enjoyed my time with it in VR.

I've subscribed to EA's service for a month for this. £50 seemed like a little much for what's going to be an 8 hour jaunt that I've already done before, but £15 is fine and if I love it to bits I'll just pick it up in a sale at £20 or something.

My work soundtrack today is the OST for tabletop RPG Death In Space which feels a lot like what Dead-Space-Scored-In-The-80's might sound like.

I'm sure this is in no way shape or form is worth 80 euro (65 quid) and I am a complete fool for handing over this amount of cash for a remake. You're all morons if you paid this amount for Forspoken or any of the shite Ubi shits out nowadays.

But my situation is surely different. I am not part of the problem 🤔

Your financial sacrifice will bring us one step closer to Dead Space 4. Make us whole, @df0

Hang on, it’s already part of the EA Play subscription is it, the full remastered version?

Impressions on a 4090, 5800X, 32GB RAM, 3840x1600:

  • Menus seem to run at a lower framerate than the base game, slightly weird because it feels like an fps drop when they animate in game. But you can tell yourself it's the framerate that Isaac's hologadget runs at. It's not an issue.
  • Decent enough set of options, including film grain and motion smoothing which I obviously disabled instantly. Didn't see a FOV slider but hey, it's Dead Space.
  • Ultrawide implementation seems completely fine, no issues at all including cutscenes and menus. Nice one.
  • There is a tiny bit of raytracing tucked away in the AO settings. I didn't see much of a visual or performance difference.
  • Performance is ooooooooooK. It does compile shaders up front (yay) but still hitches during loading a little bit here and there.
  • DLSS auto got me an extra 20-30fps. Not dramatic, not bad.
  • Performance is quite variable from area to area, 80fps one minute and 160fps the next. I've stuck everything in auto and it seems to have levelled it out a bit. Seems to relate to the size of the area more than anything else. We'll see how it holds up when everything kicks off.
  • Some of the shadows look amazing, some of them look like really low-count raytraced shadows leading to that nasty blotchy effect, even when RT is disabled. Wondering if the RT setting doesn't turn off until you restart the game, as I saw some stuff which looked very raytraced even when it was off (good job if not!) (EDIT - This is a DLSS issue, from resetera: "Game's not adjusting MIP LOD levels when using DLSS (and likely FSR2, didn't check). This results in huge texture detail loss when enabling any DLSS preset, even "Quality". And there are no built-in sharpening option either."
  • Controls equally well on pad or mouse, no issues either way.
  • Biggest jumpscare so far was a physics bug where an enemy body got stuck in a door, so when I went back through it the ragdolling corpse when mental as the door opened. Nice

Generic screenshot of ultra with no DLSS, sits at about 80fps.

Yep, this is some good old chonky Dead Space.

Hint: there is a text log right at the start of the game (turn left instead of right) which infodumps a whole load of extra background for Isaac which I think is new. But it's been a while and I can't remember anything from DS3.

Loving this. It's just different enough to have it not feel like the same game. Every so small differences to puzzles and scenes. Graphically it's disappointing from a shiny next gen point of view. It's just not that impressive in 4k RT on PS5.

Still, loving my time with this. There is just something to DS that ticks all the right boxes for me.

Extremely slight spoiler for Chapter 2 (new mechanic I do not understand).

Spoiler

These "Security Level 2 needed", how do I get to level 2? I bought/upgraded the Suit but that did nothing. Is it unlocked via story progression?

Edit: and never mind, literally 3 minutes later I got it. Thanks story progression :)

Having loads of fun with this already. My memory of the first is hazy, helped by the game mixing things up a bit no doubt, so it mostly feels like a revisit of an old favourite minus the "uhh, did it always look like this? moment of disappointment. It looks like what I remember Dead Space looking like.

Ultrawide is a great upgrade for survival horror too. It's nice to see so much of your surroundings despite the tight FOV!

At least on the PC, it's only doing RT for ambient occlusion. So I wouldn't worry about turning it off too much. If that's the case you're not missing reflections etc. It's the halving of resolution allowing for the doubling the framerate more than the lack of RT I expect. I would absolutely go for the 60fps option on console.

I think I soft-locked myself in Chapter 3.

Spoiler

Fuelling Station North is running, took the gondola to Fuelling Station South, close to the Station I receive a call from Daniels who says something about she might be able to help me. And nothing happens. Fuelling Station South does not allow me to use kinesis or whatever it's called on it so I can't "link" the power.

🤷‍♂️

Dang it, sorted. Ignore the quest line, open the nearby locked door with keycard found nearby 🤦‍♂️

EA play pro is only on PC right?

Yes

Its a great way of playing new EA games if you are on PC as it gets them day one.

I’m holding off until March when Jedi Survivor comes out and then will signup for a month or two to blitz them both (and maybe that Monster Hunter knock off).

I've just went for a years Play Pro sub, I'll never finish this in a month or two, I chop and change what I play too much. Always finish a game but rarely by playing it exclusively.

Could go game only for £37.99 Origin or £47.99 on Steam, already have a couple of purchased games on Origin so used to the launcher.

Anyway, like the look of Wild Hearts, and of course the new Jedi game. Will probably play more than ten hours on the new NFS plus the other tat that's not on basic Play.

A year for £89.99, I'll get my worth out of it.

Looking forward to this. Rinsed all three of the games back in the day.
