I’ve already covered this. He’s wrong when he disagrees with me. All other times he’s right.

Sure, but who cares what anyone thinks about a movie, really? If I read a film review, I’m basically just checking to see if the reviewer is as clever as me.

Personally I’ve never found a reviewer as clever as me as even the best critics have different opinions to mine occasionally. So yes, reviews are by and large a complete waste of time.

I just look at rotten tomatoes score and review it myself based on the number before seeing it. It’s currently sitting at 82%, so here is my review;

 

“it’s ok. Similar to Us it has some creative ideas but it’s not as revolutionary as get out or whatever it was called. You’ll have a good time but won’t really remember it in 10 years time.

I had a really good time with this but as mentioned above it’s not the film I expected from the trailers.

It reminded me most of Tremors - a small group of likeable characters in an isolated location using their ingenuity to fend off a giant people eater.

 

As a big summer monster movie with a few moments of genuine horror and a gloriously stupid third act I thought it was great fun.

Absolutely. High concept, as you’d expect from the director, but it’s more cohesive and satisfying than Us. It’s horror, sci-fi and comedy with Western trappings, driven by likeable characters and a left field mystery. It’s got moments that excel in each of those genres - a particularly grizzly and gooey scene springs to mind - and the cinematography is gorgeous.

Didn’t hate it but was underwhelmed by the film overall, despite really enjoying the first hour.

 

Do agree it looks gorgeous, would have liked to have seen it on big screen rather than a screener at home but hey, free movie and sofa ain’t too shabby.

I wasn't totally sold on it. I absolutely adored both Get Out and Us so I think I was tarred by massive expectations. Enjoyed it but felt it was bloated and wouldn't describe it as a horror whatsoever, wasn't the slightest bit scary. Sci-Fi thriller maybe. It was....fine.

Loved it and yeah, that’s a good assessment. Knew nothing going in so it gave me few good genre swerves up to the half way mark.

I liked this overall.  Better than Us which I liked, but obviously not as good as Get Out.

I wasn’t massively into some of the messages that Peele was pushing, but give them a pass as didn’t distract too much from the main story.  It overall just wasn’t as joined up as I was hoping.

I enjoyed this but, as others have said - it certainly wasn't quite what I was expecting, which was both good and also a little disappointing, given some of my pre-conceived ideas of what I was going to see not being realised.

 

One question:

Was there any particular reason for the stuff with the chimpanzee? This was probably the most brutal part of the film but it didn't seem to have any real payoff that I spotted (unless I missed something when I went to the toilet).

The Chimp stuff was well directed but it really shouldn't have survived the editing process. Its just a confusing diversion that goes nowhere.

If one of the themes of the film is ‘trying to exploit wild animals for entertainment and profit will end badly’ then it’s ironic that Ricky had already witnessed that first hand but clearly didn’t learn his lesson.

There’s a clear theme of “telling our own stories” or “being in charge of our own narrative.” Ricky was part of something completely horrific that deeply shaped who he is as a person. But it’s something that our lead characters barely remember, hell it’s more famous as a Saturday Night Live sketch than a life altering event that tore his first crush’s face off and killed his TV career as a young actor.

 

He deals with this by setting up a museum to it and charging people to sleep in there. He’s taking his own trauma and monetising it. Is it any different to what the leads want to do with Space Jaws?

It’s like if in Free Willy, the end of the second act was the killer whale massacring everyone at Sea World and escaping and then the movie suddenly turns in to Jaws. Which it should have.

 

The animal aspect is muddled thematically by the fact that he doesn’t actually know it’s an animal he’s dealing with. He thinks it’s a UFO full of little guys. In principle that could’ve been a front for the show, but the movie doesn’t gesture that way.
 

But it still works as an example of our insane need to turn everything we find, no matter how profound and unknowable, in to a grotesque spectacle. Whether it’s a chimp or a saucer.

Exploiting animals theme, I liked all the cheeky little things that tied into this. There’s a throwaway mention of Seigfried and Roy and the choice of Scorpion King for a film within a film was a nice touch. There’s probably loads I missed. 

As an aside, about 5 years ago I went to Dover castle and we saw a display by Atkinsons Action Horses. Haywood Hollywood Horses seemed bizarrely similar!
