MGS:TTS Old vs. New

In the pic of the back of the truck, they don't have any life left in the PSX version :D They must be really shit if they ccan't get to the truck without even being seen.

But yes, I agree that the game does look less, umm, mucky. Everything, especially in that first pic and the one of snake in the corridor, is very clean, and just not as gritty as the original.

You can see the difference in the guards and what have you. The characters certainly look much smoother and generally benefit from the polygon count getting knocked up. But I'm dissapointed with the lack of detail that was so welcome in the original.

I think it looks great, certainly no better or worse than MGS2, and I think it will prove to be a very, very good game.

Silicon KNights, worked alongside Konami has to result in something good, and what with MGS 3 coming out (whenever), it looks like PS2 and GC owners will have their fill of stealth em up action.

The PSone version used copious amounts of motion blur during cut-scenes and focus effects, IIRC, which are all missing from the remake I think.

It just looks a lot less stylish, and far too clean as someone mentioned. Shadow Moses looked decrepid in MGS. Actually, thinking about it, isn't that something that MGS2 also lacked, the same sort of grimy real-world-ness?

I shall reserve judgement until I see it running on my gamecube at home. In fact I may even place the PS1 version in my PS2 and then flick the scart switch at opportune moments to see the difference with my own eyes.

On the other hand, I may just get a life and not let trivial, small things bother me quite so...

gfx problems or not, it's still a damn fine game. Way, WAY better than MGS2 IMO.

IF you've got a ps1/ps2 and haven't played mgs1, get the original.

If you only have a Cube, get TTS. You won't be disappointed either way.

As far as I can see from the screens, the original breathed more ambience.

Maybe the grainy textures from the original are just a by-product of the hardware? If Kojima's vision of Shadow moses was more akin to the remake (Smart, clean corridors etc.) would we accept this? He did choose such textures in MGS2 after all. Maybe he just couldn't get the look he was after when developing for PS1?

It doesn't matter. MGS tapped into the Zeitgest of the era, and was a generation defining game, in my opinion. Messing with it in any way, shape or form is taking a risk.

Yes, Shadow Moses may well have been a product for it's graphical period, but didn't it feel *right*? It was old, decaying... just like Snake. A soldier who's pretty much past his prime.

They reflected one another, and that's why it was so fantastic.

Me thinks you read too much into things

The parallels between Snake and Shadow Moses are painfully clear. An old soldier brought out of seclusion to infiltrate a decaying facility, held by a terrorist group wanting to get hold of the bodily remains of a dead military genuis.

The game is about fading glory. An old generation's last stand against the new wave of Genome enhanced soldiers...
