GTA Remastered Trilogy (GTA3/San Andreas/Vice City) - ah sh*t, here we go again

There's absolutely no way I'm buying GTA V for a third time, but chances are I'll be getting all of these for a second time. San Andreas is possibly my all-time favourite and I went back to it not too long ago, although the nostalgia hit me immediately the control was really clunky. If they made them feel a little more like V I'd be smashing my piggy bank right now

Lots of people complaining about the controls in the old games but I never even noticed them changing all the way up to 5 (and then only when they introduced FPV). Was there just no right-stick camera control (like Tomb Raider) or were the controls totally different?

They didn't use the shoulder buttons in the same way. When driving, X (PS) or A (Xbox) was used for accelleration, Circle/B for breaking. The triggers were used for looking left/right when driving and as far as I remember you had no free camera on the right stick (well, the camera would move but as soon as you let go of the stick it would snap back to the default view, and I don't think you could turn the camera more than 90 degrees each direction).

Edit: Shooting also was a bit naff. I think it was hold R1/RB for aiming and then L1/LB to shoot. R2/RT-L2/LT cycled weapons and controlled zoom on sniper scope.

This is pure fantasy stuff of course but it would be nice if they added a more customisable character into GTA3 given that the protaganist never speaks (They could even 'shock horror' have a female option in single player for the first time ever possibly)

I had a go for old time's sake on San Andreas recently, original Xbox, yes it's really clunky these days so I thought I'd just activate a load of cheats and have some fun, get all the weapons, breeze through it. But in one mission it took all my weapons away and made me use a pistol. Bloody useless!

Emily Rogers also retweeted it. Down for the Switch version if true.

Sources confirmed that Rockstar Dundee, a Scottish outpost and one of the newest studios at the company, is leading the charge on developing the remastered games. Another source explained that the studio is heavily involved in not just the remasters, but is even helping Rockstar on developing the next-gen GTA V ports that are due out later this year. This lines up with information I had heard last year, after the studio was purchased by Rockstar Games. Before becoming Rockstar Dundee, the studio was Ruffian games and had previously worked on Crackdown 2, Crackdown 3 and assisted with development on the Master Chief Collection.

That must be, what, 25 Rockstar studios working on GTA now?

They should just rename Rockstar Games to GTA Games and make GTA a "meta verse". With GTA being renamed GTA: Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead games being renamed GTA:Wikky Wikky Wild Wild West and hopefully a Bully sequel being released as GTA: Skooldaze.

That lock-on system was especially rubbish in GTA3 as it included dead enemies when cycling through targets, as I remember it. They would refine it as the series went on. It's the sort of thing even a half-decent remaster would fix.

Plus I think there were mods on the PC version at least that would fix the camera when you used the right stick, it made a helluva difference.

Right stick action on III and Vice City was non-existent, if you moved the right stick it would just go into first person mode. Worthless. I have no idea how I managed to completed either of those games given the control setup. Like, if you had to go round a corner where enemies were and your camera didnt have the right angle you basically just had to cross your fingers.

Have to admit, last time I briefly played a few hours of GTA 3 and GTA VC, all the way back in 2008 (via original PS2 discs played on my PS3), I did find the control scheme… Rather awkward to manoeuvre with. Suppose it goes to show how quickly double-analogue 3D game design developed.

Them using Unreal sounds like an out of house team working to just slap a lazy port over to the new consoles with some crappy filters on top

Yeah. I mean, it's just hit the 'export to modern consoles' button on Unreal and it's easy money.

Now hang on, it's not that easy, they also have to hit the 'export to Unreal' button in their proprietary engines before they can do that.

Give them some credit, Rockstar, like Apple, can make necessary boring incremental change sound exciting, in this case updating their old games just enough to run on modern hardware and make them easier to update should the need arise later.

Having said that there must be a new audience for the original III/Vice City/San Andreas who simply could not get on with the early-2000s controls and wouldn't be able to deprogram back to when people our age were playing them. That's a big barrier, so it could be a good reason to at the very least update the controls just enough to make them playable by the twin-stick generation, adding a camera to right-stick and using the shoulder buttons better. It would be worth the time and money to do that if it'll make those old games saleable going forward. There are tax-paying adults today who weren't even born when GTA 3 came out.

One thing I don't expect but would love to see is the addition of the first person mode that V got when it got the little upgrade version on the newer consoles. I can't go back to third person now, turning like an ocean liner and accidentally knocking someone over in front of the police.

And have your custom character show up in that San Andreas mission? Great idea!

I'd actually be up for a GTA III or Vice City remaster.  Because (IIRC), the protagonist was silent and not, like V, a choice between hateful arsehole, whiny arsehole and psychopathic arsehole.

In Vice City the main character was voiced by Ray Liotta wasn't it?

I can't remember.  But, IIRC, he wasn't that much of an arsehole.

I've said it before, but when I restarted GTA V I gave up because Michael and his family are such hateful pricks that I didn't want to go on any further to get the world to open up fully.  And early on Franklin helps a twat of a paparrazo basically reduce someone to a panic attack because "she's a slut" or something.

It's probably just me being older as I completed it when it came out but as far as replays go I've got better things to do than reward Rockstar for that sort of shit.

Anyway, getting off topic.

So you never got to Trevor? Because that definitely would have tipped you over.

Speaking as someone who has only ever bought any of the GTAs once (except San Andreas, which I also bought on 360), I’d be well up for this.

I’ve got extremely fond memories of GTA 3. It was a proper paradigm-shift. It completely changed my perspective on what games could be. I love Liberty City. I loved exploring it. If they could modernise the visuals and the controls that would be just fabulous.

The characters and more realistic graphics kind of ruined GTA for me. I liked 3 because it felt more sandboxy with fewer cutscenes and stuff to get in the way. Running people over (and causing general havoc) is also no longer fun when, A: it’s more realistic, and B: you’ve got a character with a voice and personality doing it.

It was OK when it was cartoony, and characters just went “splat!” when you ran them over, then were resurrected by medics 30 seconds later. Or maybe I’ve just grown up, I dunno.

But I really don’t think I could bear to play GTA V again.

I love the idea of remasters of these games, but the cold dark reality of the situation is that I don’t have time to play all the new games and stuff I’ve never played before that I want to play. There’s no way that I could justify the hours required to play through these again to make it worth my while.

Trevor was the limit for me. Definitely because I'm older, I reckon. I know he was designed to be totally unlikeable and probably meant to embody the "go berserk" gameplay style, but it was too much, not funny, just mean and horrible. At least with III especially it wasn't trying to be quite as edgy.
