Then what is Ty doing on there? No actual problem with him, I'm sure he's perfectly suited to whatever it is he normally does, but he stuck out like a sore thumb in this. He has E4 all over him!

I hadn't seen the E4 schedule but you're right. It seems like an odd decision to me. I understand that it might not stand much chance of ever being cool to the youth but I don't see what they're gaining by pitching so old in the content. I'm not going to watch or not on the basis of whether or not they feature more violent games, and certainly not those at the extremes like MK. It seems like they only have anything to lose, in terms of the parent and child combination that a few in here have now ruled out or younger teens. 

 

And of course the original broadcast at weekday teatimes so it does seem like a fairly natural assumption to have made that this might calibrate somewhat similarly, at a sort of PG/12A level. I struggle to see that this would rule out much in the way of interesting content.

:) Absolutely. What's a schedule? I'm far from been a kid but been schedule free for years now. Hell we don't have an aerial at all in the house we moved into two years ago! Just a fibre connection.

 

Doubt many people watch scheduled TV anymore these days. Probably a scheduled time in a diary to watch some TV on demand perhaps.... :)

Overrule. The footage was very tame, to take into account the target demographic is middle-aged men who watched the original and now have 9 year-old sons.

 

(Having said that, my 13 year-old thought it was lame (but I reckon he secretly enjoyed it)).

While I loved the inclusion and diversity I thought the rest of it was pretty poor lurching from amateurish to just plain bad. Glad so many on here enjoyed it though. 
 

Budget isn’t everything but when you consider how massive the gaming market is the fact that this is currently the only “mainstream” gaming show in the UK you think a little more effort towards production values and content could have been justified. 
 

I liked Rab’s Sugar Boat piece though.

I watched this as a fan of Consolevania/Videogaiden and not the original GamesMaster (never really watched it as a kid). I think I might be in the awkward age bracket of being not quite old enough to be nostalgic about GamesMaster but sufficiently old that the bits that were designed to appeal to teens etc weren't my cup of tea either. 

Robert Florence did a good job as main presenter, it's just everything else that didn't work for me.

The Graun seem to like it: 

 

Miraculously, the new GamesMaster series has pulled off the near-impossible trick of modernising the show while retaining its core DNA. There are still game reviews and challenges, but all the faces are new. Patrick Moore – who in the original series played the titular sadistic, spherical cyborg – has been replaced by Sir Trevor McDonald, and in place of Dominik Diamond are three presenters; the comedy writer Rab Florence, the esports host Frankie Ward and the Instagram comedian Ty Logan. It stands as a cruel indictment of time that Florence is the only one of the new presenters old enough to remember the original (and its coveted golden joystick trophy). And it turns out he didn’t even watch it that much.

 

The writer compares it to Clarkson-era Top Gear, and I can see some similarities. 

 

With regards target audience: 

 

If GamesMaster struggles at all, it’s in trying to reconcile the homespun charm of the original with the full-pelt commerce of the current landscape. Perhaps the audience is being eased in gently, but two of the first challenges in the reboot are Super Mario and Mortal Kombat; franchises that are 36 and 29 years old respectively. Who is this new version aimed at, then – middle-aged nostalgists, or younger people used to the world of Twitch streams?

 

“We’re not competing with esports,” says Ward. “This is a much more accessible show, in the sense that it’s not just about one game. Some Twitch shows can be six hours long. They’re a major time investment. You mentioned Top Gear earlier, and there is a magazine quality to it. You’re going to learn things. You’re probably going to see a video game you haven’t heard of and be like, ‘Ah, I need to get that because we’ve got people coming round at Christmas and I want to beat them.’”

 

So still no clearer then.

Nah, big budgets would ruin it. It needs to be a bit shonky with ambitions beyond its means. They've nailed that!

This was really good! We watched it on YouTube mind, and straight after it played the last episode of real Games Master, which was just brilliant:

Out of morbid curiosity I went looking for some Dexter Fletcher episodes there. 

 

What an insufferable eastenders-reject twat he was, but the show just felt off even if you ignore that. Lumpen, awkward pacing compared to everything before and after, and much more of a kid's show feel.

 

Good 90s title sequence in that series mind.
