Not sure why people were saying dodge is shit on this? I’m evading attacks last minute left, right and Center and it feels great. Parrying any obvious attacks, bit of shield stun, then let rip with the axe and blades, mixing up the elements. Sublime. Love it!

Yeah that was me, I was right at the beginning and I didn't really have the timing down, I've played a little more this morning and starting to get it now. I remember absolutely hating the opening of the original too and then getting right into it and I can feel this happening too. I'll be playing this all weekend I hope.

Been playing on default. 22 hours in and not had to change it though have had some ‘should I?’ moments in the last few hours of play, it certainly starts ramping up around the 15 hour mark. That said I’m hardly touching side quests and have only done 2 of those rune chests (probably out of about 30-40) that raise your health/rage. If I was taking my time I’d might switch it up 1 level.

I just want to get through it asap to be honest, tried listening to a ‘non spoiler’ podcast and it was just too much info. Then last night scrolling though news there was a headline about a specific part in the first hour of the game. I feel like this could be similar to LOU2 where within a week people are going to be casually arguing about certain narrative decisions that are essentially spoilers.

am already looking forward to going back and mopping up, which is always a sign of a good game!

So. Is this just another SM game by numbers or a more surprising package.

I completed the last one, even though I thought was terrible FWIW.

Why the fuck would you play the entirety of a 20 hour game which you think is terrible?

If you thought that one was terrible you won’t be persuaded that this is any better. It’s more of the same.

What is about these PlayStation exclusives that attracts the attention of people who know they won’t like them?

It can’t just be the review scores. Nintendo games get great scores but I’m never going to play Smash Brothers or boringly pontificate about Fire Emblem because I know they’re not for me.

FOMO, and also gives them a license to complaint-dump in the thread, to them the real game!

But that one person, @shirubagan, has liked a GoW game before. He himself stated that he naively hoped a new entry would return to past form.

There's really no need for the pile on.

Besides, each and every Nintendo game always has the most amount of people complaining about the new stuff they might not like as much as the old stuff.

I know I'm probably in the wrong here but I'm finding the game a boresome trudge, the combat isn't gelling with me this time; it feels complicated and cumbersome. Surrounds you with enemies and quick turn is L1+Dpad Down? 😄  Atreus instantly blaring out "puzzles" the moment we encounter them without a second for me to ponder. I think maybe I'm not in the right frame of mind for this and it's not the game for me at the moment, I feel so out of step with everyone else. I loved GOW 2018 enough to platinum it on PS and PC and although this looks the same, something feels quite different about it imo.

I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as I'd hoped, given that 2018 is in 'unforgettable' status for me. That said I am getting along with it better as I unlock more abilities. Really wish I could pull this FOV out a bit, or change it to ultrawide resolution (like you can on GoW PC). Would be so good for readability in combat

Quick turn being l1 down is handy enough tho, as you can instantly turn around and parry something behind you. Feels pretty godly

The game feels more strictly balanced around hitting things as often as possible (r1 spam), than hitting them with big moves due to the way immolation/permafrost work, and the fact you want to freeze/burn things and hit them with the opposite (so you can extinguish/vaporise frost). I'm finding it hard to find the flow you need here tho, weapon swapping isn't as snappy. In GoW 2018 I mainly went for axe and fists, which you could go in and out of more easily. Mostly a skill issue for now, but it's a harder game to learn.

What do you get for getting certain moves to gold tier, because some of them are incredibly cumbersome such as charge the frost on the axe and whilst doing it aim and fire. I find I'm going into fights and just trying to do certain moves to move them up tiers but I don't know why except for number go up?

As for the game I'm only 8 hours in, it's entertaining enough in short bursts but I quickly become tired of the constant puzzle sections and then short fights. I'm hoping this is just filler for the beginning and it gets more exciting.

Yeah, they rank from bronze->silver->gold, and you can stick a 'mod' in it. It can buff properties of that move, so the weird hold-down-button ice attack could deal more stun, or more damage, or give Kratos more 'permafrost' (for example).

It's a bit overdesigned imo, but kind of an interesting idea to encourage people to experiment with the kit.

Thanks for explaining, I'll keep at it even though I have my preferred moves. It is a good way to highlight and get the player to experiment but it's also a bit grindy for the moves I don't particularly like!

Is that not the same as the first game though? Part of what I enjoyed was the change of pace. Having a fairly intense combat section then a breather. Probably one of the elements that kept me going to complete the game because it is too much combat all the time I would have just quit. On par, certainly with the first, they got the balance about right oh and the story was interesting enough too continuously wanting to see what happens next. In a kind of Uncharted type way. Another thing that kept me pressing on.

The other thing about the design of the 2018 GoW and expect this reading through the comments is the depth of the game. It appeals to all sorts of gamers. It has the almost the strategy level of a decent fighter game if you want it or you can get away with running around button mashing! It does feel extremely satisfying with you beat a boss too.

The miserablists poking holes here is both hilarious and

So far it’s exactly like a directly sequel to GOW 2018, although on PS5 it’s 4kish and 60 fps, on a console that doesn’t sound like a hoover.

Also the games pace will be slow at the start to onboard new players.
Only if you were on the blackest of media blackouts would this all be unexpected.

All good points! I really enjoyed the "slow" pace on the first one. It gave you time to get used to the environment and characters etc. Although IIRC it picked up quickly with the first encounter with Baldur! :) Great intro and something to set the expectations for the rest of the game.

Looking forward to playing this at some point.

I don’t know how people enjoy playing this on anything but Give me Story. Yesterday I had a fight with multiple optional bosses in one small arena, what a mess. Flying projectiles, stuff on the ground, getting hit my off-screen attacks. Tested my patience with that one.

Prioritise defending against attacks that are red on your indicators, you’ve played the first game right?

I'm new here and don't want to rock the boat, but what exactly is the etiquette on here for talking about this game? There's lots of posts complaining about 'miserabalists' and 'complain dumping'. I'm not sure what group I fall in myself, as someone who's a bit disappointed in the game but enjoys some aspects of it.

For off screen attacks I mainly rely on the callouts from your companion, I struggle a lot more with the on screen hazards tho (poison puddles on grass for example). When this comes out on PC I'll be playing it with the ultrawide setting I think. (No Mercy mode btw, tho started on balance to learn the game a bit)

You should feel free to say whatever you want, but doesn’t mean it’ll be free from disagreement or rebuttal.

My expression is fuelled by a fatigue for the negativity often found here. But I’m addicted to doomscrolling Discussion and getting annoyed.

:) they'll always be people that complain and similarly those who don't see any faults. Just enjoy and put out how you feel about something I guess.... That is what makes things lively to one degree or another.

Chat mostly revolves around the game itself eventually though once the initial wave of impressions are done with.
