Only just found out that there's a 120 fps mode, not the 40/120Hz but an actual 120 fps mode.  Zoo wee mama. Can't wait to give that a whirl.

I know it's been talked about on the previous page but I'm late to the news. This game is going to be a cracker.

But essentially it’s a lot better than 30fps

I don't really buy this, I've tried it on an LGCX with Ratchet and Horizon. It's a bit smoother in terms of frametime, but it's still 40fps. I wouldn't dream of using it over a minimum 60fps mode in a million years, even if that mode was locked to 1080p. But we spent the previous 10 generations being told by capital-G console Gamers that 30fps was fine and most people can't tell the difference, so it's weird that they're so invested in 40fps and framerates in general all of a sudden.

I do think there's a lot to be said for simplifying the PC experience massively, nobody likes tweaking settings forever while trying to find a compromise between resolution, performance and visual quality. It's boring and leaves you feeling deflated as you turn bells and whistles off. Preconfigured modes with framerate targets is a good compromise for most - even on PC. All these changes are positive but I do wonder how much complexity the console market will take before they get frustrated choosing between so many modes. I honestly think my PS5 is a more complex device than my PC now from a UX perspective, once you take into account the poorly thought out multiple tiers of subscription model and the complicated upgrade/back-forward compatibility issues, and the UI/UX which delivers them. Not to mention the absolute clusterfuck that is HDR, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision/Atmos, TVs shipping with motion smoothing and dynamic everything switched on, etc.

Well, speaking personally, I was fine with 30fps for my entire life, until I spent a solid six months only playing 60fps games on the new Series X. That broke me, and I can't go back now. Having to play a 30fps game today would be like trying to play a 20fps game five years ago. I don't think I would've accepted that, but I'm not sure as none were released! Kakariko Village in Breath of the Wild on WiiU came closest to being unbearable.

If 40fps was acceptably smooth to me, whilst allowing me to retain all the benefits of the 'fidelity' setting, of course I'd be interested. It's extra smoothness for zero or negligible cost in most 40fps-enabled games so far.

Can you please provide supporting evidence to show that the people invested in 40fps are the same ones who were telling you 30fps was fine.

Agree... consoles are (or were) about simplicity. Boot it up and play. Everything else should be left to the devs IMHO to decide what works best for what they are making.

Seems like consoles really are just becoming cheap PCs these days. Suppose its not really that complex to switch between a "pretty" mode and a "performance" mode TBH but if we keep going down this trajectory are we going to have yet more options - performance with enhanced graphics, performance with low settings et etc.

I think that devs just need to target three profiles really: -

  • 30fps
  • 60fps
  • 120fps

... so any or all of the above per game. Make the decisions for what goes into those, but make sure the game adheres to those framerates as closely as possible. People can then just pick what they want.

I don’t disagree but quite a key difference there is that all that shit is optional and the game will still run. On PC there’s the risk it just doesn’t work at all and you’ve wasted your money.
