There's already some discussion about this film in the horror thread, but it really deserves its on thread. I watched it tonight, knowing nothing about it beyond it seems to be getting buzz online and it's a wild ride. I appreciated just how committed it was to it's own lunacy towards the end with no winking at the audience or drenching everything in 10 layers of irony like so many modern films do.

There'll inevitably be spoilers in this thread and I think this a film that really benefits from going in quite cold. So if you haven't seen it yet but need something more before deciding to view it or not I'd recommend just reading the official synopsis below.

Quote

Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

Now leave the thread and come back when you've watched it.

Now entering spoiler town.

Spoiler

I fucking lolled my arse off when they revealed the real Gabriel in the old video and it was Kuato as a skeleton muppet with waggly T-Rex arms. I have no doubt that reaction was intentional and then from that point onwards it just shoots to the moon and suddenly turns into The Matrix except Neo's even more bloodthirsty and the stuntman has a rubber face glued to to the back (front) of his head. I was grinning like a loon. Proper guffaw when he beaned the cops with a chair like Brendan Fraser in The Mummy. Top stuff.

At the moment I think it’s piracy-only unless you’re in the US.

I swung between hating this and thinking it was pretty fun in a Drag Me To Hell kind of way, but overall I think it’s just mediocre. At times it feels like a tv pilot, has a really artificial look to it and the kind of acting that seems like it’d be more at home in a cw series.
Something that bothered me was

Spoiler

Why give the game away in the opening sequence? I know we don’t know Gabriel’s nature exactly, but we have a pretty good idea. Seems like such a weird thing to do, especially if you’re wanting to do a bit of a giallo homage - and makes the reveals later on a lot less of a surprise.

I thought Drag Me To Hell was abysmal, and this is nowhere near as good.

Disclaimer - it's really not my type of horror. I like slow, creepy shit with ambiguity and ghost type supernatural stuff.

The VVitch/Babadook/Midsommar/Wicker Man (old) = brilliant.

Slasher films/schlock/zombie/torture porn = turd.

I thought Drag Me to Hell was a lot of fun, but it’s also clearly a load of old crap too. My tastes run parallel to yours but I also love zombie and shlock stuff into the bargain, so maybe I’ll like this.

I spent the first 15 minutes of this waiting for it to pull out and reveal it was a cheesy movie-within-a-movie. Once it's clear they're deliberately going for complete shlock it's loads of fun.

Hmm. I hated The VVitch and Babadook is possibly the worst film I’ve ever seen. But Midsommar and Wicker Man are absolutely brilliant. So I’m not sure what to make of your disapproval of this.

I tried grabbing this but it’s taking ages to DL for some reason, so I’ve given up. So does it have a Giallo flavour to it? If so, I’m totally up for this when it hits a normal streaming service.

There’s a couple of shots with a red tinge and a batshit twist, which is really all it takes to be a giallo homage it seems. As a Bava/Argento fan, I thought it was mild lip service at best.

In the end, I managed to watch it tonight. I'd have to agree, the Giallo influence I'd read about is not quite there. However, I did enjoy the film a lot. Completely nuts. Flawed for sure, but that's not always a bad thing in my book.
