Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) - It's really Groot!

I found it pretty buggy. Graphics got all fudged up on multiple occasions, stuck on scenery a number of times, menu overlays getting stuck on screen even after a reload. It was good though! Writing and voice acting were absolutely top notch, but yeah, buggy and also a felt a bit dragged out.

No buggier than any big release these days and it’s entirely “finished” - I’ve “finished” it and saw one bug in the entire playthrough.

Well it must be true then! lol

This is by far the buggiest AAA game I’ve played in a long long time. And there’s some horrible hitching and scenery rebuilding on every camera cut. It’s really undercooked.
PS5 version that is. Possible an effect of the pandemic situation but yeah, absolutely bug ridden. Even loads of the subtitles are missing and the final cutscenes doesn’t play correctly. Lol 😂

I though this game was good. 7/10 type affair and having it in the rllmuk GOTY top 5 is bananas 🍌

So you haven't played Cyberpunk 2077 then?  I'm not going to dispute there are bugs, but the ones in this are the kind that you're unlucky to hit, rather than likely and game breaking.

Calling this unfinished/undercooked is a bit unfair when compared to other games and the states they were released in at launch. Mass Effect Andromeda is the only game I've played that I would fairly class as unfinished at launch.

edit: Also Witcher 3, cant believe I forgot about that!

I have not played Cyberpunk 2077, and this is absolutely the most unfinished thing I’ve played in ages.

Its absolutely fair to call it unfinished and undercooked because it absolutely is, as so many months after launch too!

I played it for 96 hours not long after launch. I hit some bugs for sure, but nothing deserving the hyperbolic responses such as from you and Triple A.

Don’t call it hyperbolic, I’m not full of shit, and neither is - I’m sure - the few posters who also found the game to be pretty buggy.

You probably didn’t encounter them, good for you! This doesn’t mean your experience of the game is de facto.

Then don't exaggerate. Calling this unfinished is a clear exaggeration.

It’s not even remotely an exaggeration, it’s a game that’s been shipped with some awful progress impeding bugs, and those are just the larger issues, all waived to hit a Q4 release date.

It’s completely unfinished and one of my biggest issues with the game, that such a well thought out single player adventure had these horrible glaring issue cropping up with frequency. That’s also while playing the game as intended, quite conservatively.

Such as?

I once hit a bug in the game where I had to restart from a checkpoint, because Groot got stuck in a wall. But the checkpoints are regular so I lost, oh, two minutes maybe, before continuing on. Compare that to the 20 or so hours I'd put into Witcher 3 before hitting a bug that CDPR couldn't fix for a good while, causing me to start the game from scratch. Now that was an unfinished game at launch.

I think your perspective on what an unfinished game is, is somewhat askew. And this surprises me, aren't you a game dev?

I finished this today. Overall I was impressed - the story and dialogue were very compelling, it’s very funny and it looked great. The bugs and glitches do distract, and the gameplay lacks depth and is too derivative to elevate it above perfunctory, but it was a very enjoyable ride while it lasted. And Peter Quill’s mix tape is awesome!

I finished this today on PS5, on the whole I really liked it. I only paid £20 off eBay and definitely got my money's worth.

After the first hour or so I'd adjusted to the fact that these weren't the movie characters and really got into the story. I'd rate it above the second GOTG film.

I really rated the character design, especially the main baddies.

There's definitely some bugs in there - The most annoying was levels where things wouldn't move on as one baddie wasn't dead but was also invisible so I had to restart from the previous checkpoint.

There was one bug where I walked my team through a door on a space ship, transitioning from a boring metal corridor - only to be presented with the infinite void of space, swirling and pulsing with all the colours perceptible to the human eye.

“Wow!”, I thought, “I never expected such an esoteric and abstract room to be behind such an ordinary door! These developers are geniuses!”

Turns out the next room of the ship just hadn’t quite loaded yet.

I'm about an hour and a bit in and this has already committed a cardinal sin. In one of the exploring the ship sections and clicking on one of the dozens of prompts advances the story and immediately autosaves and locks me out of conversations with no apparent way to just revert to an earlier save.

Playing this on XBox Series S now that it's on Gamepass and wanted to ask about performance. I didn't change any options when I started the game, so had the locked at 30fps option enabled. Things felt a bit slow and lumbering and I tried unchecking the fixed frame rate option to enable variable frame rate. Is it just me or does this make things generally smoother?

If it runs at 45+ consistently then yes, VRR will make it smoother, and better than 30fps..

It was a lovely surprise to see this arrive on Game Pass - had missed that it was coming.

Just a shame that it’s happened post Elden Ring as going to be hard to tear myself away from that 😞

Any idea how long this might stay on Game Pass for?

Usually 6 months minimum. Just going on average of past games joining and leaving.
