Guardians of the Galaxy (2021) - It's really Groot!

I've got to say, all the descriptions of this as being a decent, linear, single-player romp are actually very appealing. With so many mainstream games having gone open-world/multiplayer-first/GaaS, it's refreshing to get something so straightforward.

If it weren't associated with subject matter that fills me with apathy, licensed from a company that fills me with antipathy, I'd jump on this.

I've been watching the MCU films in timeline order with my son and GotG is the next one up.

I watched an opening hour play through on YouTube this morning and it looks better than I expected.

Is it worth full price? Hell no, Square Enix will have SOAs in place with all retailers for this to be less than half price to drive sales over Chrimbo. I'll wait until then.

If you like the banter in the GOTG movie you'll probably like this. Movement and combat feels a little bit on the janky side but it does the job. The environments are space and lovely. It's incredibly linear but go down every dead end anyway for free stuff.

I think if you don't already like and know the Guardians you probably won't get a lot out of this though.

Oh and there's a definite element of choice in the conversation system. By doing a certain sequence of choices I was able to get an item that looks to be useful in the future. I stoped Drax doing something to Rocket and got a Telltale style "Rocket appreciates you standing up for him" that hints at further things. I don't think any of this will directly impact the direction of the story but I suspect it'll make certain things easier/harder/bit different later in the game.

Combat is serviceable but decent enough. I suspect with more dev time and less pandemic we'd be able to driectly control the Guardian of our choice instead of just Peter.

Also the ultimate being a huddle followed by 80s music is just amazing. Also don't forget you can change the background music on the ship.

That Skill Up video did it for me. If I want to support more linear SP games with no bullshit I have to vote with my wallet. Looks like it will run beautifully on my PC with RTX and DLSS so I'll go for that. The environments look really stunning and colorful.

Just bought it on PC. £34 from CDKEYS. I've already got an embarrassment of riches on the go but I like my one player games so up for showing companies there's gold in them there hills. Probably a futile gesture but hey ho.

It looks pretty damn good too, I'm not a crazy big tech altruist like.

Any clue on the differences of quality and performance mode? I’ve read performance mode takes a big hit graphically but quality can’t maintain steady 30 fps?

Reports vary. I think we just need to wait for a DF vid. I'm playing in performance and it looks great.

Just played through chapter 1 and it looks great (to my eyes) in performance mode - the 30fps in quality negates any visual gains

Already made me laugh out loud several times and the facial animation and voice acting is superb.
combat is functional so far but the mass effect type command wheel could be decent fun once you power up the team.
