To my surprise, I found myself unwrapping a copy of this on Christmas morning and I've had a fantastic couple of hours with it.

It really is a throwback to the PS2 era and I'm loving it. 😂

Even by my simple tastes this game does very little outside of the basic walk and shoot stuff formulae but once you really begin to focus on chaining your attacks to keep the combo score rising, it does open up an extra layer of depth.

There seems to be more of a focus on shooting objects than in previous games. In some levels you feel like a tank as you stroll forward, blowing up cars, barrels and whatever else lines your path.

On the PS5 it holds up fine technically. No stutters or jumps to spoil the show and it's a constant 60fps. Looks fine too. It's clearly a native PS4 game but it looks perfectly adequate for the game it is and the meaty SFX all get the job done too.

Only two hours in but as I say, I'm loving it. For better or worse it really is a time capsule to a style of game which even PS3 era gamers would have found a little old hat but you'll know instantly if that holds any appeal!

Presumably you've done the train level by now. Did you not find the final stretch of that to be infuriating?

Ha, literally just up to that bit. I'll let you know later... but I appreciate the heads up.

I don't want to sound like a dick... but no, I died once during that whole level. It's intense in parts but I didn't find it particularly tough.

Now Stage 7 (SEED Refinery Area 2), that's proving to be a challenge but generally I'm just rolling through it. I'm playing on the PS5 on normal difficulty.

I'll say it again though, this is one of the simplest games I've played since the early PS2 era. It's like how third person shooters were before Kill Switch introduced peek and shoot play.

It does enough and I'm enjoying the spectacle of it all but as much fun as I'm having with it, this really is a time capsule of a game.

Good that you're enjoying it. I didn't really mean in terms of difficulty anyway, more that the character and controls aren't suited to anything more than shooting, and every time it introduces something a little more platformy, it can be a pain in the arse. That's the first one, but there are plenty more.

Ah, in that case your comment makes perfect sense. 🤣🤣

Yeah, the platformy stuff is ridiculously clunky. Not enough that it detracts from the fun (for me) but yeah, from that angle, point very much taken. 🤣

I really need to get around to playing this, seeing this get a reboot in 2022 was such a random but nice surprise. I've always had a dumb true love of the first Gungrave, I think it was its mix of pretty cool for its day cel shaded graphics. ludicrously silly OTT anime style, simple stress free action and a relatively short length you can blast through. One of my PS2 personal gems!
