Is LBC ok?

Ok, ok, guys, I get the O'Brien hate, it's a Corbyn thing. I ain't going anywhere near that tho, can already feel the hounds circling.

It's easy to dismiss as that, but it's not really that.

We don't need Corbyn, we just need progressive social policies and a commitment to combat the freakishly aggressive capitalism that leaves so many people in the country terrified, destitute and institutionally disadvantaged.

JOB represents that group of centrists who make vague positive noises, but aren't willing to go the extra mile to help deliver those, which makes anything positive he says ring very hollow. It's a performance made of pithy, retweetable gotchas and little substance.

And it makes him pretty much worthless in our current climate, bearing in mind the needs that are so incredibly obvious at this point. And that's without discussing him being a moderate face of a less moderate organ, which lends other people on the network legitimacy in the eyes of people who consider themselves... moderate.

I was given James O'Brien's book as a well intentioned but deeply misguided Christmas present.

I skimmed through it and it appears to just be him regurgitating arguments he "won" on his show but that have apparently haunted him so much he felt the need to write an entire book of Partridge-esque "needless to say" moments.

The man is a massive fucking clown shoe.

Can anyone actually describe the political view of M. Nawaz? Unless it’s about extremist factions, his political compass is going to bore through the earth if it swings any faster.

Yeah he's an odd one I used to really like him, he's super clued up on some subjects, however he seems to think he's super clued up on EVERY subject. His wife is American isn't she, so I all I can think is he gets a lot of his news and views from over there as they seem at odds with what's going on here.

I've listened to LBC my whole life, my mum use to have it on when I was a kid and I just find it comforting to have it on in the background.

I find it weird you all hate O'brien, from some of your comments I doubt you've ever listened to him. Couple of 'zinger' posts in this thread that he regularly goes on about on his show, like how terrible his TV show was.

Anyway Eddie Mair, James, Shelagh Fogarty and Nick Abbot are all worth a listen.

I used to think Mair was brilliant, one of the BBCs finest interviews and the single reason why the PM programme is so great.

Having listened to his half arsed radio phone in show on LBC a couple of times as opposed to Evan Davies impressive stewardship of PM; preserving pretty much everything |I liked about the programme turns out there may be as much in a format as a presenter...

He has his moments and can be very funny sometimes, but does seem to be on holiday a lot.

He's in the Nawaz business, as far as I can tell. Everything is about generating hype for himself at the cost of any consistency or actual progress. But it's very useful for an organisation like LBC to have a token 'former extremist' to provide performative balance.

I dislike LBC simply because it's a London radio station that now pretends to be national, and that winds me up, being a northerner.

I try not to make sarcastic, rude comments to strangers on Twitter, but when the excellent Eddie Mair left Radio 4 to go to LBC I tweeted to him that it was a shame he was going to regional radio, and that I'd miss him, but I didn't get a response.

Last time I was in London my brother had this on in the car and I had to get him to turn it off after a few minutes as it was giving me some intense brain damage. If LBC ceased to exist now, the world would be a slightly better place.

He lost his mind falling down a Trump hole. Like, proper "Dominion Hugo Chavez" level bananas. I think he's under orders to not speak of it on LBC though on pain of losing his job.

I find myself listening to LBC whilst doing boring things like making the coffee or washing up etc. What grates me the most are probably the adverts, they are clearly very targeted at old people and angry men. Often there will be an advert that is making fun of avocados, yoga, meditating, working at home, therapy etc.

Don't forget Cordell and Cordell. Got a wife you want to get rid of? She thinks that looking after the kids and sacrificing her career while you were making millions in the banking industry entitles her to even a penny! Cordell and Cordell will make sure she doesn't get an ounce, so you can focus on upgrading to a newer model.

Nick Abbot (Friday-Sunday 10pm to 1am) is one of my favorite radio shows to listen to. To hear a fairly sensible person deal with the kind of person who rings up a talk radio station in the twilight hours is constantly entertaining. The whole show is like a panto at this point.

I used to listen to Nick Abbot ages ago on Virgin Radio when it was MW only! Must have been early 90s.

doesn't leave you much to listen to whilst you're driving to work though.

I have nothing to add to the LBC debate, I dint listen to it, but have you considered podcasts? I haven't listened to the radio on my commute in several years. At least with Podcasts you can tailor it to your interests.

Our car barely has a radio unfortunately. I do listen to loads of podcasts, but there's something about the radio I really like. I'm a bit weird as again, we do watch a lot of on-demand, but I find live TV to have a certain quality that's hard to replicate. Maybe it's the shared experience or something, I'm not sure.

Use to listen to it in cabs on the way home, even on something as mild as upgrading tech products it seemed a bit hyped up and left me feeling a bit on edge

I CAN'T AFFORD TO UPGRADE MY iPHONE EVERY TIME ONE COMES OUT, I HAVE TO SELL THE OLD ONE FIRST. DO YOU UPGRADE, DO YOU, DO YOU.... ?? DO SELL YOUR OLD iPHONE OR DO YOU JUST BUY A NEW ONE...

In regards to JOB he is a bully that punches down and uses his education to 'out wit' (demean) lesser beings. Just as JRM does. Only for the other side on Brexit.

Nah, what do you base this on, the viral clips of him destroying people phoning in?

His main problem is none of the people who engineered Brexit will actually call in, JRM did once and they sort of cancelled each other out. He's not punching down on purpose it's just the only people who are foolish enough phone in and defend Brexit end up like fish in a barrel.

He did stop doing it for a while but on occasions someone will call in and he'll get tempted to ask them about why they voted to leave, it's quite interesting sometimes to find out why.

He's clearly not a moron, he is however almost certainly a duplicitous hypocrite.

Putting aside his crocodile tears regarding the Tories, despite what he, his employer and his colleagues quite clearly did on a daily basis to help ensure that they retained power, what rankles me most about him is the absolute drivel he talks with regard to the right wing media.

Every time I 'tune into him' I hear him slagging off the right wing media seemingly without an ounce of self awareness about where he's working and almost every other presenter he shares the channel with. He's either completely full of shit, saying what he's paid to say each morning in order to give the impression of a bit of balance or the LBC Christmas Party must be a bit of an uncomfortable evening. I know where I'd be putting my money.

Told you earlier I ain't getting into an argument about Corbyn. Saying he's a moron just tells me you've hardly ever listened to him.

He talks bout this quite often actually. I think he's very aware of where he's working and there's plenty of left leaning presenters on LBC. This thread is just obvious who listens to it and who doesn't.

I’ve listened to him plenty, which is why I can say with confidence he’s a fucking moron. Subsequently choosing to listen to him on a regular basis would suggest I am also a moron, and we both know that’s not the case.

Does he? Whenever I've ever heard other presenters mentioned he quickly shuts the caller down and says that he's not willing to discuss other programmes on the channel.

I'd be interested to hear who you think the plenty of left leaning presenters are too. Natasha Devon seems fairly left leaning on the couple of times I've caught her show, but that's about it. There's a small handful of centrist types, a couple who don't seem to discuss politics in the middle of the night (one of whom specialises in nasty sniping at women and their weight) and then the remainder who are straight out of the pages of the red top tabloids.
