ResetEra sold for $4.5m. Nothing goes to the mods and staff.

I like NeoGaf. It's basically a bigger version of this place.

Nah, Neogaf is like the evil twin of Resetera. Or Resetera is the evil twin version of Neogaf - depends on your politics, I guess. Speaking of which, Evilore decided to ban all politics talk on his forum because it had descended into a QAnon-tastic, Covid-denying jerkfest.

Given how vocal that place is about worker exploitation in the industry, mobanetwork are about to be left holding a $4.5 million tumbleweed.

Only for things they find easy to boycott. The silence over the accusations thrown at Naughty Dog and Insomniac was deafening.

Is @choddoever going to let me know when he can pick up the new server I have ready to make the forum hardware even more hilariously over powered for what it does?

I can't wait to run htop on this bad boy.

It would do, but for the six-figure salaries the committee get.

Serious answer: no.  This is mainly because we don't accept adverts and our subscriptions are set at a price which just covers the annual costs (plus a little to save up for new servers or other equipment when we might need it).  Part of the reason @Graham S proposed a cooperative to own it when @rllmuk wanted to leave was that it would be run for the community, not as a money-making exercise.

Our accounts are published each year and you can see that we made a small surplus this year, after a small loss last year.  It's nice and finely balanced.

Well, there's your first mistake. If you'd accepted adverts and set the subscriptions at a price which would result in a $560,000 annual profit, we'd have been bought out by Mike Ashley by now and we'd all be sat in space yachts on the oceans of Mars, vomiting into platinum fireplaces, and sipping purple drank out of enormous mugs.

When you read that announcement thread on Resetera, people don't seem very concerned, to be honest. Many applaud and congratulate the previous owner.

A lot of the more recent posts in it have been more critical which resulted in this zinger.

I'm so old now I've forgotten why I came here in the first place, and where I was before that.

I remember Edge closing down but for the life of me have no recollection of how I found this place.

Yes and even trivial things like the mass outrage over Microsoft buying developers. When Sony do it, celebrations lol.

No trackers (aside from whatever social nonsense we link to, and some Stripe js you can block with Privacy Badger), no ads, no one making a penny off this place, people who care about the privacy of your data. And so on.

I know we used to have a good chortle at Serious Business(tm) committee stuff, with a "secretary" and "minutes" and other stuff, but look how this has shielded us from *gestures at at the whole internet*

Please chip in a few quid if you can. And toss a coin like to @layten for having us some incredible hardware.

Bit of a tangent, but are there any issues with society membership for non-Brits? I've been sticking to donor membership just in case filthy Dutchies aren't allowed.

I went to NTSC-UK after Edge closed because I wasn’t part of the iRC discussions about where everyone was going. Heard about this place a month or so later on there, as it was referred to as the place where all the Edge lot went. Joined that day (late 2004) and have been here since.

Nope, work away. I'm in Ireland and am a supporter.

The gaffer has already mentioned it, but I have no issues paying from the US. It's all just the magically unregulated wonder of PayPal.

The admin/mod team over there seem utterly unable to deal with anything. Small, medium or large. It all gets hit with a massive hammer and causes entire groups to up sticks and leave. The thread where the sales community left is a complete shitshow.

That's why I ultimately never signed up for an account and rarely visited. The mods seemed to think their status gave them license to laud it over the community and they just saw the role as an excuse to flex, with very little time or thought given to actually being a decent mod. Having been a mod here, it always irked me because here there's always a good faith effort made to be fair and to give all but the most obvious decisions a fair hearing.

Certainly the oldest posters anyway 👴

Anyway, the best 'mod goes bananas' incident was back on GAF, when hated mod Amir0x wanted to win an argument so hard he went back and edited other peoples old posts, unfortunately for him as someone else was quoting them. But such was his pull that he didn't even get banned, just de-modded. He even got the jokey custom tag 'demodded but not denutted'.

Turned out he probably should have been denutted as he was subsequently arrested for child porn offences.

Wasn't he also the one who held a fundraiser for his sick Mum and waxed lyrical about the hard times he was having and how desperate his Mum needed healthcare, only to raise the ire of near everyone who donated to him when a few months later, he was openly bragging about spending thousands on drugs and going on massive benders with his mates? Yeah, a really peach that guy!

Yeah, that cracked me up. His original pitch was something like, "we're going to make this place a haven for free speech and respectful discourse, free from the woke bigotry of old", fast forward a few months and the right wing took him up on his offer, which eventually lead to a purge of members swiftly followed by a blanket ban on certain subjects and eventually he just nuked the whole politics forum as it had become an open sewer of conspiracy theories, bigotry and discrimination..... who knew.

I think I was linked here from the venerable sigames (the football manager guys) off topic forum, which is still going despite a typical bit of forum controversy back in the day when they split football chat into a separate folder.
