Utter mess of a half. Great goal, but exactly the kind of goal United depend on now. Great individual moment at the expense of anything approaching a team. Which is grim enough in itself, but when you add it to defenders clowing around, it means you're depending on a lousy gameplan even more than you should be.

No great surprise. Once again using the club's money to boost their own.

So yeah, no money for the midfielder, but they found some to make a signing that'd bump the share price.

Meanwhile, walked through again and again, and no nerve to make the subs that might matter.

Honestly, how many good performances have we put in this season?  We were excellent against Leeds.  We beat Newcastle fairly handily, although we were crap for most of that game as well, and the scoreline flattered us.  I thought we were okay against West Ham, although again we needed a last minute penalty save  to get the points.

Apart from that, we were poor against Everton, lucky against Villarreal, atrocious against Villa, pathetic against Young Boys, lucky against Wolves, and mediocre against Southampton.  We've been shit for a while, if we're taking the end of last season into account.

Any shot at challenging for the league is gone already. We've possibly dropped more points than Liverpool or Man City will by the end of the season, and it's mid October. (Edit - I double checked my maths, and this would mean one of those two getting 104 points!  So maybe not, but give it a couple more weeks...) We have a struggle on our hands to get into the top four.

The signings were individually good, but apart from Verane, didn't target the areas we needed to strengthen. Arguably, turning the team into the Ronaldo roadshow has done a lot of damage. He himself is brilliant, and you can't fault anything he's done on the pitch. He also seems to be a great team man, and is probably having a positive effect off the pitch as well.  However, Cavani just suits this team better, because his indefatigable running and willingness to chase all the way back into his own area actually masked some defensive failings, and allowed us to control games better.   If Sancho is going to be used as a left winger (Ole is very committed to the idea of inverted wingers, left-footers on the right and right-footers on the left, and Sancho is right-footed) then I don't understand his signing at all. He's a brilliant player, but we're incredibly strong on the left, and he becomes about third-choice when everyone is fit, behind Rashford and Pogba.

The team doesn't really fit together at all. Of course it's surely possible to have Pogba, Ronaldo, and Fernandes in the same team, but the rest of the team would have to be either incredibly good at controlling games or incredibly defensive.  Our rest of the team is a bit mixed-ability, particularly in the centre of midfield, and certainly not great defensively.  We rely on getting loads of special players on the pitch at once and hoping they produce a bit of individual magic.  We're not even set up to get the best out of Ronaldo.

I also think it's true that Ronaldo was signed to increase the share price and personally enrich the Glazers.

It's all a bit fucked.

We’ve been poor pretty much all season. At least our next few league games aren’t against Man City, Spurs and Liverpool.

I reckon we can get 3 point out of them lol

Seriously, what happened yesterday? Was it the complete lack of quality in midfield? And trying to play to many individually excellent players without th grafters to back them up?

So what do we reckon tonight then? I'm going Ole to use the same fucking team that doesn't work, Donny looking pissed on the bench, and losing 3-0! Any advance?

And lets not even think about Sunday!

I'm a little more optimistic... 3-1 :(

What's happened to the last few weeks of this thread?

Edit - Good to know it wasn't just me!

We're playing a more balanced team today, but it's going to be all about the work-rate of Bruno, Rashford, and Greenwood.  I think we should be playing Lingard and Cavani, to be honest.  I suspect Atalanta will over-run us.  We basically get no pressing in the centre of our attack.

I suspect some elements of our fanbase will be going mad over returning to McFred, as if that's ever been the problem with the team.  If we're playing attacking players with no obligation to work defensively, we need the centre of midfield to consist of extremely hard-working players.  McFred are the players of that type that we have.  I don't think Fred is of the quality we need, but he's the right kind of player at least.

As a larger point, I don't get why we don't play normal, non-inverted wingers.  In Ronaldo we have the best header of a cross in the modern game, but our wingers are set up to cut inside and shoot.  The idea must be for the full-backs to cross it, but surely proper wingers are worth trying, aren't they?  Sancho on the right, for example?

the problem i have with mcfred is that unlike Matic, neither of them drop into the defence when attacking.

So with Matic, when we are trying to contain a team in their own half, matic drops into the defence and it pushes up but spreads wider, like scholes/carrick used to do. this allows the fullbacks to push up, as the cover is there, also, neither offer what i would call "an out ball" a player that is simply available to pass back to and recycle play when things look like they are breaking down.

I'm also really disappointed that Mata didn't convert himself into a DLP, as he would have been perfect for that role!

honestly these are problems that ultimately come down to the manager...

genuinely though, what would sir alex have had these players playing like! he always got the best out of players!
