I love the idea of playing physical board games but can't get the family involved fully. 

 

Are there any good single player experiences? Maybe something logic based? I love Slitherlink, Sudoku, etc and also Chess. 

 

Not great with Deck builders as I struggle at times to keep concentration, but willing to learn. 

 

I adored Lights Out too back in my early youth years.

not a fan of the solo board game myself, but my gaming buddy is. He recommends terraforming Mars as a solo, ill ask him for others. 

 

Before you spend cash on physical games, Have a look on board game arena and Yucata, see if anything takes your fancy.

No, it’s a good question,  but take a look at bga and yucata at the free versions of board games, try before you buy! 
it’s easy to say oh yeah get game x when it’s like £40-100 to buy it on the off chance you enjoy it.

Jaws of the Lion, Mage Knight, Clans of Caledonia, Descent Legends of the Dark, Mansions of Madness are my favourite solo games

 

of those, Mage Knight is probably the most 'logic based'.  It looks like a big sprawling RPG - but it much more of a big puzzle.

 

I've never played physically, but Cartographers and Roll Player also work really well as solo.

I do a bit of Solo board gaming in the house.  I've enjoyed Hostage Negotiator by Van Ryder games.  Review 

 

I've ordered their latest game Final Girl, which is broadly based on the same game mechanics, it looks really fun. I do like solo gaming, but really miss the chat around the table when playing with others.  I find myself narrating what I'm doing just to fill the void of other people.  My wife thinks its hilarious.

I play a lot of solo games as my fiancée falls asleep quite early most nights, my favourites at the moment are Too Many Bones, Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion, The West Kingdom games (Architects, Paladins and Viscounts) and Dice Throne Adventures however TMB and DTA are quite big and expensive games and not a good place to start.

 

I'd definitely recommend Gloomhaven if you fancy some Dungeon crawling. I've been playing solo controlling 2 characters and it's great fun. You can also use an app called gloomhaven helper to cut down on some of the upkeep if that sounds good and it also means less stuff on the table.

 

The West Kingdom games have great Solo AIs that are easy to control and can scale in difficulty. I really enjoy all three and would need more plays before I could rank them.

 

A smaller one I'd check out is Sprawlopolis, it's a buttonshy wallet game of only about 17 cards (city blocks on one side and scoring objectives on the other) where you use 3 cards for your scoring objective and shuffle the rest and use them to put together a City hoping to achieve your objective score. Highly variable and very logical. They also have a game called Agropolis that came out not long ago which is a farm like version and can be used alongside it or instead of sprawlopolis.

I love Sprawopolis.

 

Under Falling Skies is also excellent.

 

Mage Knight is fabulous, but I'd not recommend it to beginners.

 

D-Day Dice ... If you like chucking dice a bit, but then using the results in clever ways.  Nice balance of luck and brainpower.

Is there anything that might use a Chess style mechanic? Not chess as such but hopefully I make sense. I have played chess based puzzle games digitally so maybe something has been made similar physically.

Loving all of these suggestion and might try some myself as the OH likes games to but wins to often to be much for fun for either of us at strategy/logic ones like Hive and isn't interested in the really geeky stuff

Space Hulk: Death Angel is a great little card game for solo play. It's super tense and you'll feel like your back is against the wall the whole time. You definitely won't win every game (or even most games). Easy to learn and once you get the rules down you can do a game in about 30 mins.

 

The negative is that it's out of print and won't see more expansions etc. If you keep an eye on eBay you could pick up a second hand copy for £25 or less (the available expansions are pretty expensive though).

I went through a patch of solo games pre children. Definitely Death Angel, that's great and Scythe. (In fact, Scythe was good when I was off on parental leave as you could leave it set up on the table and chip in between naps!). 

 

Also really enjoyed Warhammer Quest: An Adventure Card Game; Robinson Crusoe; and Legendary Encounters (Aliens). On the latter, I know you said no deck builders, but that one is much less punishing than usual and very evocative of the Aliens movies. Oh, and Deep Space D-6 is a great pick up and play.

I'm not close to finished it but started it two handed, I think using four would be a bit long winded and too much to think about for what I would want from the game but you may be different. Also this way I can always go back and play through it again using the removeable sticker set and the other two characters.

We're playing it coop with a single character each and it works really well with two the way it balances the number of enemies. I think playing four characters, which then increases the number of enemies would become more of a burden (as one person, if you had four people who could each control one of the monsters it would be fine).
