The thread title still isn't as long as the og Dark Souls thread title used to be. Do better.

I'm trying to remember what that full title was. It was something like "Dark Souls - Praise the sun for jolly cooperation! Amazing chest ahead. YOU DIED."

Then again, I could just look it up:

Well, I was close enough.

Second island boss is an absolute spectacle. I actually cheered when

Spoiler

Super Sonic grabbed this giant intimidating flying titan by the tail , then swung it around like a weightless rag doll and yeeted it into the side of a fucking mountain with absolutely no chill whatsoever

Morio Kishimoto on Sonic Frontiers' reception:

Quote

I'm sorry I couldn't contact you as I've been busy since the release date. I'm relieved that the release date has arrived and it seems to have reached everyone safely. We check the opinion of the critics and everyone else. As you pointed out, we've got a long way to go and we're taking this seriously as a global playtest.

If it hadn't been for the sort of pop-up not seen since the days of the Saturn version of Daytona USA, I would've already bought it.

It's promising though that the director says this game is actually a bit of a test case for the new direction they want to take the franchise in, and acknowledges there's still room for improvement. And while it's the same director that brought us the pretty good Colours and Lost World, he's also the one behind the lamentable Black Knight and Forces. Gentlemen, start your cycles!

I've been watching some gameplay online - it looks alright. Not anything revolutionary but not as offensive as previous efforts. The upgrade system looks interesting and the more open areas look like they have a bunch of mini objectives, collectibles and distractions when you're not actually fighting bosses and doing conventional Sonic gameplay. It's like if the hubs of Adventure actually had something to do in them. :P The thing that still sticks out for me is the "tone" - the low-key ambience lacks the energy I'd expect from a Sonic game. The music genuinely sounds closer to Automata's overworld tunes at times... but then I guess something more lively might get annoying in an open world.

It's not something I'd personally pick up at full price, but I think it would be disingenuous to put this in the same category as Unleashed or whatever.

Global playtest?

When seeking solid information and critique on whether or not a game is worth playing I too rely on comedy youtubers.

Sometimes he takes things out of context or exaggerates for comedic value, but you can usually tell the difference between a joke criticism and his legit criticism of a title.

I could understand the anger at the playtest comment if the game was an unfinished mess.

It is not. Not even close. It feels feature complete, with no issues outside of some wonky dlc implementation and bad asset pop in (which could have been fixed with some Lods and dither swapping).

It just feels like the press, and anyone who has not played it, are still riding this Sonic is trash meme. The game is fine, and great at times. Steam user reviews are through the roof, and most people who have played it seem to very much be enjoying it.

I feel for the development team, who clearly believed in this. The global playtest will be to evaluate the future of the franchise, with a fully complete game as a base to see what the future holds. Not some cash grab to make a quick buck and fix it later.

But aye... As always it is taken like the developers are filth, and are just out to con us.

I fucking love it and I didn't think I would ever say that about a sonic game.    They've nailed the control scheme.   VIsually it can be a bit shonky when you're trying to work out a route to a collectable but actually navigating the open world feels great and, importantly,  it's fun.   It's all I'm playing at the moment.

I'm at the 19 hour mark, about a 1/4 through the final island and having too much fun to argue about it on rllmuk.

How come we champion 6/10s like Binary Domain but this game can't be good because it's got 7s? Terminator Resistance got like 4s but most people who bothered to play it loved it. Labour of love they say. Fantastic use of the license. All true.

Mind you the God of War thread is like "glorified dlc" and "boring plod" and that's got like a 94% metascore so maybe it's just rllmuk in a bad mood lately

Yeah it was obvious that the quote from the director, a non-english speaker was misinterpreted, the "global playtest" is obvious that he means now the game is out they will be seeking feedback from players worldwide but that don't create clicks, so journalists being a herd of gazelle, twist it to make it sound like "lol we sold you a £60 beta thx" which is just complete clickbait horseshit. I can't believe we have to explain this.

Binary Domain's a masterwork(s all you can't go wrong), pissing over pretty much every other TPS in the satisfying shooting stakes with great characters and excellent setpieces. There's a reason it's beloved, even if idiot critics at the time were essentially swine confronted with pearls.

ANYWAY, I think this still looks great. People are often predisposed to love or hate something before it even comes out, and their main use for reviews seems to use them as ammunition to confirm their biases. I'd much rather have an interesting but flawed game than some polished pile of tedium, and this genuinely looks interesting to me. If I wasn't drowning in game pass games, watching my expenditure and doing some time sink multiplayer FPS stuff right now I'd have dove right in.

Oh, and the music I've heard so far rocks.
