Sonic Frontiers - the game

£28 for PS4 or PS5 version from Amazon. I’ve bitten. Would prefer it on a handheld but can’t be doing with a non-60fps Sonic game.

But seriously, this title screen:

However, despite the grim dark setting that nobody asked for, I’m really looking forward to messing around in the game-world as Sonic. Looks like a decent game to chill with, much like Burnout Paradise.

I think that’s what the 3D Sonic games are best at, really. I own most of them and I play them from time to time. I don’t think they’re particularly good games, but they’re fun to mess around in, and I’m hoping this leans into that.

Have you considered that the more you play the game the more that the gloomy clouds disperse showing a blue sky?
I've not even played the game, don't even know but I bet that's what happens. Perhaps see if that occurs? 😂

Why does everything have to be exactly like it was before?
Gotta watch! You might get caught by RubberJohnny and the Nostagia Police and get sent straight to jail!

There's a desert themed island which is very bright as you would expect.

£28 is a great price for this ! worth that for the soundtrack alone, when you beat the game you unlock arcade mode and can play the cyberspace levels at your leisure. I'll often just let Sonic idle so I can hear the music. Tomoya Ohtani absolutely crushed this soundtrack , even all the vocal collaborations are fantastic.

Solo at 4:02 fuckin sweet as.

It is great and i'm no hardcore Sonic fanboi either. I think i described Forces as 'Aggressively Mediocre' hated '06, I couldn't even finish Unleashed and that's one of the better ones. I liked Colours, loved Generations (outside of the last boss) but a big part of that was the nostalgia of running through the classic zones. Mania was superb but owed a big debt to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which I would still give the edge to all things considered.

This is just superb fun and the hours melted away while playing it. Probably my GOTY depending on how Callisto turns out. Definetely the best soundtrack though, Shredder's Revenge runs close but the sheer amount of good tracks in this is staggering. The official soundtrack release next month is 6 CDs and 6.5 hours of music and i'm tempted to pick it up.

Listening to that clip above, Sonic Rock music is not good music, and not good Sonic music either.

(suspect that isn't indicative of the full soundtrack but everything I have heard is either this or atmospheric movie soundtrack nonsense. I'll form a better opinion once I've played it etc.)

Holy shit, this first Cyberspace/Green Hill stage is super fun. Nice and short, and had great fun replaying it until I’d achieved all of the goals.

I mean, this is what you want from a Sonic game right? Super short stages that you can blitz through and achieve some goals.

Been playing more of this last night, and I can’t believe I’m saying it, I’m actually stunned, but it’s wonderful.

Flawed, of course, and I don’t really understand what all of the collectibles are for or why I’m taking this thing to that character, but I’m just loving running around this sandbox world. It’s everything a 3D Sonic game should have been: a massive sandbox to run around in, filled with boosters, ramps, grind rails, rings, and things to collect, with short end-to-end ‘classic’ stages with a bunch of goals to achieve. And he’s really fun to control, not super twitchy like before.

I do wish it would stop raining though. The sun comes out every now and then and the game looks much better for it, but that should be the default view. Maybe the bad weather should only appear when you’re fighting a boss, like in Bowser’s Fury?

Other than that, the first island is probably a bit sparse and could do with a few more interesting environments, but the realistic look isn’t as bad as I was expecting, and does look nice when the sun is out.

Despite putting up with the overwhelming negativity of the thread i'm glad that everyone who plays it seems to like it !

The critics got it wrong on this one (not that a 73 is a bad score, but that laughable 2/10 from digtial trends tanked it) Frontiers is absolutely crushing it in user reviews.

It’s not a great game, but it is a reasonably good game. For a 3D Sonic game that’s a MASSIVE improvement.

This is my take as well.

I think it's much better than I was expecting it to be, but I'm not getting carried away (not yet anyway). I'm playing on Steam Deck and it's great on that, one enjoying it so far - only a few hours in. It reminds me of Solar Ash and The Pathless.

That Dunkey video where he appears to selectively take certain bits in a context that makes the game seem far worse than it probably is for the lols, is a really weird thing to be doing to an AA release that isn't exactly a massive thing or likely to sell that well, considering Dunkey has been pushing that whole wanting to publish indie games thing recently. Not sure that's going to be very attractive to smaller developers.
