Console availability - what's going on?

I wonder if Sony and Microsoft will do something almost like a relaunch of the PS5 and Series X in marketing terms late next year - I’m thinking that greater stock availability could coincide with the arrival of increased numbers of proper next gen-only games that will provide a wow factor to the mass market.

From reading this forum for the past year I quite envy the relative ease with which people in the UK (and everywhere else that isn't Japan I guess) seem to be able to get the new consoles. Xbox in particular seems like anyone there who wants one can get one at RRP if they make some relatively light effort.

And this thread proves my point. The difference between the new consoles being nonexistent unless you want to pay one of the many many scalpers double the rrp and "you have to spend a few minutes/hours occasionally checking a few websites to get one for rrp" :(

Is bitcoin mining still having a big effect on demand for GPUs? Or is that only a small part of the shortage, compared to the other factors mentioned above?

I heard something a while ago that there were plans for the latest generation of cards to throttle themselves to make them less attractive for mining - did that happen, and did it have much of an effect?

Beware of ordering via these currys links for a Series X.

I clicked just now and it looked like it was availalable, so carried on and wentt through to basket.  They say delivery is available and let me go through the whole ordering and paying propcess, then after I had finished the Paypal process I imediately got an email from Currys saying they had to cancel with some unavailable flag being the cause...

I mean, fuckers should have told me it was unavailable the minute I clicked the "buy" button in my basket..

Throughout all these shortages, it's not the actual shortages that is annoying (as I'm fully aware world wide supply chains and manufacturing is pretty boned).  What is annoying is how they are handling letting folks have them when they do become available.

I really can't see how a pre-order queue process for each retailer can't be implemented on a one per customer (account, and postal address specific) basis.

I'm happy to wait really, but I'm sure as fuck not happy to have to jump through all these stock alert hoops and hope to fuck I'm ever quick enough to beat bots through the process (which I know I am 100% not) so someone else can have multiples at one time.

I was lucky that a mate had two pre-orders for a PS5 last year and he let me have one of those (and I realise I benefitted in that regard from a lack of a one per customer basis, so could be considered a hypocrit).  And I also see Series S's available at the large online retailers very, very regularly for the last three months or so.

It certainly seems, having installed a stock checker again for curiosity, you can get an Xbox Series X from loads of places.  You might have to wait for the notification and be a bit quick, but you'll get one today if you want one.

PS5 seems all silent, suggesting that MS have a massive opportunity to take a big lead at the moment.

Tweet is gone now but yeah the impact of crypto shouldn’t be overlooked as it is the biggest reason why SquareEnix have been unable to obtain additional servers to help with Final Fantasy XIV.

The demand for FFXIV has gotten so bad that the game has been pulled from sale altogether as there simply isn’t enough server to appease the millions of people who want to play the new expansion.

I managed to bag both a Series X and a PS5 in the last week, both base RRP consoles with no stupid bundles with stuff I didn't want. The Series X was from Argos. I was literally on their website and refreshed the page and it said there was one for pickup from a local store, but none for delivery.

The PS5 was bought by looking on one of those stock checker websites. That was bought from Amazon of all places, (which I have never seen them come in stock ever) The link was from the stock checker page. I clicked it and it went onto Amazon in order to buy it. The strange thing was, I checked Amazon by going straight through to their site normally and it said it was out of stock still. Anyway, all was good and I got it next day as I have prime. I think you have a better chance if you have a prime subscription.

I also managed to get my brother a PS5 through Sony Direct from the email they send out. That was lucky as I only just noticed it in my junk folder, so make sure you check that as well.

This is exactly what I experienced when buying my Series X from amazon Germany. Only the direct link from the store checker showed stock. Very strange.

@partious and anyone else in Japan looking for a PS5 or Xbox Series X, where are you looking for stock updates? The Xbox Japan Twitter account seems to just be talking about new releases, Games with Gold and Game Pass stuff, Amazon Japan constantly says out of stock, as does Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera and the Microsoft store.

I'm assuming stock trackers exist in Japan, but I suspect I'm using the wrong terms to google for them as I'm turning up zilch.

I have no idea how accurate these are as they were just what I found when I typed "series x 在庫" or some such into google recently, but I found these two twitter accounts.

https://mobile.twitter.com/ps5zaiko

https://mobile.twitter.com/xbox_zaiko

Which seem to be linked to this website.

Anyway, I spotted some of the amazon updates last week about 10 minutes after the tweets went up and when I checked amazon there was nothing. My guess is it's a mixture of a few things.

i)Japan is getting a pitiful amount of stock compared to places like the UK, if the Japanese people complaining online are correct.

ii)All the shops here (aside from amazon I think)do those awful lotteries which you have to be a member for etc. Becoming a member of 10 electronics chains just to enter raffles for the chance to maybe be able to pay rrp for a console seems like a bit more effort than people in the UK are talking about.

iii) Scalping is widespread here unfortunately. A local game shop had a series x for 85,000 recently and one of the big den den town retro shops has a cabinet full of ps5s for around the same price. So yeah, almost no stock plus you get to compete with online scalpers and also everyone's beloved retro shops for whatever there is.

Cheers dude. Yeah, those fucking raffles at Bic Camera et al were rubbish, but they seem to only be doing them for the PS5 right now. I remember going into the Bic Camera in Yurakucho a few months ago and asking and the staff member I spoke with said that the Series X was no longer for sale at the shop. He didn't go into details so I didn't bother pressing him to clarify exactly what he meant.

Guess I'll just need to check that site regularly and hope for the best.

It seems like Amazon is expecting a sizeable shipment of Series X consoles in the next few weeks, for anyone wanting the console on its own at RRP.

https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/microsoft-xbox-series-x-amazon-3854752 appeared this morning and if you go to the page (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-RRT-00007-Series-X/dp/B08H93GKNJ/?tag=pepperugc03-21&ascsubtag=2283155023) they are still available for delivery this year.
