Yep, everyone should get on this, it's great.

Incidentally, Shoesmith isn't a new character. It's based on the character from The Magician which Scott Ryan wrote, starred in and directed in 2005. It's a kind of fake documentary that follows Shoesmith as he goes about his day to day criminal activities. I've not seen it but looks worth a watch and seems to lean more on the black comedy elements. It got good reviews. It's on Amazon Video but you'll need to stump up the princely sum of £3.49 to rent it.

I heard about this on @Stigweard ‘s podcast and binged it a few weeks ago. Tense, funny, touching and brutal in equal measure an is such incredible TV that I’m already considering watching it again very soon. I’ve only ever rewatched The Wire, Spaced, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos so it’s in some pretty good company :)

I've put it on my watchlist to watch after The Witcher.

Crikey, the ending

Spoiler

Given that I knew it was definitely ending, I really wasn’t sure he was coming out alive. But when that guy exited the house on fire, I knew he was winning that battle.

But then the actual ending. Tense. Thought the guys were hired to kill him. But by the end it seems they’re a couple of dumbasses who may have picked the wrong random target to fuck with. I guess there’s still ambiguity, but that’s how I read it

That was a tense few minutes.  I thought there was some ambiguity around whether they were dickhead chancers or hitmen, but either way when Ray cracked that smile I felt pretty confident their plans were about to go significantly awry.  Fantastic way to end the show.

We ended up rinsing this on Boxing Day and today as we’re isolating, three fantastic series and it’s gutting there’s no more. It’s so funny!

For a show that relies so heavily on coincidences it’s a mark of quality that it rarely seems unrealistic…think the only thing that was blatantly silly was the Christmas episode where

Spoiler

the girlfriend’s brother took the unicorn candle, and refused to give it to Ray’s daughter, so he threw him through the window. All of that was stupid.

But only dropping one five minute clanger during three whole series is pretty good!

Not sure why people feel the need to steam in after one 20-minute episode with their hot take, asking if it gets better, when it’s clear everyone in this thread has watched most/all of it and really enjoyed it.

haha thought the same thing, thread full of positivity = when does it get good. Also throw in a bit of 'I don't understand the disabled'.

Hot take? Since when is asking if a series improves after a pilot episode considered a hot take? And put your pitch forks away, I didn't know the guy had motor neurone disease. Jesus Christ.

The episodes are 20 minutes long, you could finish the first series in a couple of hours. And a cursory glance at this thread would have told you a lot of people are really enjoying it. And I can only assume you were on the eggnog when you watched it if you didn’t realise his brother had some sort of disability.

If you had watched one more you would of known. You fell into your own trap there.

Add me to the very impressed list.

The lead character is excellent and the cast are also really great.  It reminds me a bit of the Amazon Prime series Wayne where the central character does unspeakable nasty things to other people who half deserve it so it makes you root for them.

I watched 4 episodes yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it - I'll finish season 1 and 2 in the next few weeks.
