I'm avoiding this thread until I've watched it all, but just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who hyped it up on here. All the praise made me check it out, and I'm so glad I did. Brilliant TV.

Just finished this. Would never have chanced upon it were it not for this forum, so thanks for the heads up.

Really enjoyed it, compulsive viewing, and by christ I wish more TV shows could manage that much story and character in 25 minutes.

It starts off grimy and fun, but obviously with Breaking Bad levels of tension and darkness in places, and it's good how it built over time. Both the stuff he's being paid to do, and his increasing distaste for it.

I don't think it's above criticism though. All the female characters are paper thin and really cliched:

Spoiler

His girlfriend is a hot younger woman who just happens to chat up a lone dog walker in a park, and ends up being both cool and wise.

His ex-wife is typically prissy.

Gaz's wife is the uptight kind who hates Ray for no real reason (except perhaps his taste in adult DVDs).

Gaz's wife's new girlfriend is a man-hating lesbian with hairy armpits and a 'the future is female t-shirt' - puhleeease.

The student in the final few epsiodes is yer standard manic pixie dream girl, who also is attracted to a not-exactly-hot bloke literally twice her age. Some proper wish-fulfilment on the part of the writers, there.

And it does that thing that 24 used to do, which kind of says "if only we were allowed to torture people to get answers, we'd solve more crimes".

That said, I can overlook that stuff and still enjoy it for what it is. A grimy, violent, unglamorous, and sometimes funny show about bladdy blokes doing bladdy blokey stuff.

Ray was a brilliant character to watch, his hangdog expression, and "too old for this shit" gait were always entertaining to watch. The stuff with his brother was brilliant, as others have said, and his relationship with Gaz was always fun to watch.

And Ray's grin – whenever he deployed that on someone, you know they were fucked.

Finished this last night. Some of the scenes with his brother hit me quite hard. Just simple stuff like...

when he falls between the wall and toilet and gets stuck, and Ray finds him and helps him up. Recently, I've been in similar situations with my dad who has Parkinsons, having to help him off the floor in the same way. That it was played out in such a matter-of-fact way is what really hit me hard. No melodrama, it's just... you just get on with it because you love them. Fuck, it's made me well up again.

On top of that, it has some great fucking action!! My mum's currently watching it and loving it as well.

Me too. My dad had MND and we had a few things like that happen, and you do go into a just get on with it mode.

Wow. So glad I listened to the recommendation. I’ve never seen a show tell so much story in such a tightly packed delivery. A true master class in writing and directing.

Now I just need a Gary porn company spin-off…

Add me to the list of people grateful for the recommendations and enthusiasm in here. Thought this was superb pretty much from start to finish. Even found the incident in the middle of season two pretty believable given Ray's character and the situation he was in. Thanks, all!

Finished now and mixed feelings. Very sad it’s over, but glad too as I think I would have obsessively watched this show forever. How is this so under the radar?!

How did it take me until the last episode to realise what

dimmies are!!!

Anybody know where to watch The Magician mockumentary?

Just wanted to add my name to the 'Thanks for highlighting this amazing show' list.

I've just finished season 1 and it has been a really refreshing show. Love the 30 lmin runtime of episodes. Feels grounded and the humour is dark. Took me a few episodes to understand each episode is a farce and it often concludes in unexpected ways.

And muggins here rented it on Prime.

I think watching it after the series is a mistake. It feels like a pilot.

I spent all three seasons wanting to know what demmies were. Understood his obsession once I realised what they were.

Thank you rllmuk. This show was immense -  I watched the whole thing over 3 days, and I really didn’t want it to end. I even loved all the bits other people didn’t like so much. Absolutely top notch fucking telly - and I really hope that isn’t the last we’ve seen of Ray Shoesmith.

Thanks for the recommendation on this, it was incredible. I was sat there slightly shaking during the tension of the last episode!

Like everyone else has said, the show fleshes out its characters more tightly than anything else, no wasted space at all. Feel like the police force could do with a bit more funding, mind.

Binged all of this over a couple of weeks and loved it. Entirely agree with @Twinbee about the razor-thin characterisations of women, but the characters that the guys knew how to write were written compellingly. Also glad to see more grown-up Neighbours alums in the wild.

Hugely sympathetic character, believable but humourous performances and the part with

Spoiler

his daughter and the gun

had me tense like nothing I can remember.

Would love to see more.

I’ve just finished this. Fuck me.

And that penultimate scene, you know the one.

Spoiler

In the farmhouse

FUCK ME.

Also, I loved all the characters but whenever Gaz was involved I literally was rubbing my hands together in anticipation of what the two of them, or him, would be getting up to.

Another latecomer (we watched it slowly) now finally free to come in the thread and go “yes! That scene!” and “Dimmies!” and so on. Thanks for the recommendation! I think I’ll just not watch any drama for a few weeks, let that settle.

Recommended this to my brother. He's watched three episodes and thinks it's crap! Think I might have to pay someone to bash him.

As a counter to this - I recommended this to my sister and she has binged all of season 1 in a couple of days. What a bloody show. I've nearly finished season 2. Great stuff. Can't believe how under the radar it is.

Now I’ve finished this, I just needed to drop in again to say I love you all. Thank you so much for this thread. What an astonishing piece of TV this was. Loved every minute. Too many great moments to single anything out.

Fingers crossed Ryan gets the recognition he truly deserves.
