Wordle - free daily word game (see link in first post)

Small anecdote: Wandered to the kitchen, and noticed ITV had a gameshow on. Basically some revival of some old-ass quiz, but the aim is basically Wordle - 5 guesses to figure out a five letter word to win a cash prize, complete with green/yellow lettering for right/wrong placement.

As the revived show started in 2021, I'd hope the guy who made Wordle can get some money to keep his website going from a television studio soon, I guess.

Lingo is indeed strangely compelling. Amazing how much tougher it is against the clock. And giving you the first letter should make it easier but seems to make it harder somehow as it cuts down your word space and you can't use your 'super words' like @brawk has above. I mean, how often really do you NOT get a Wordle word? I think a part of its appeal is making you feel smart.

Wordle now gives you a Hard option (in Settings) that requires you to use each letter you’ve found so far—*much* harder!

Wordle 207 X/6

🟨🟨
🟩🟨
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩
🟨🟩🟩🟩

I couldn’t sleep so tried the new one. First one I’ve failed after a winning streak of 10+!

Spoiler

Bloody American spelling - that changes things!

Edit: I might be ahead of some of you - this was #207.

I was instantly addicted to Wordle, and frustrated by the one-a-day limit, so I googled & sure enough I’m not the only one. OctoKatherine coded a clone w/o the limit. (No results sharing, and no histogram, but you can hone your strategy over multiple plays)

https://octokatherine.github.io/word-master/

My strategy is to cover as much of the alphabet as possible with 4 words that share no duplicate letters (i.e., 5x4=20 letters) and hit the letters that occur most commonly (RSTLNE…).

My words:

WAGED

FORTY

BLINK

CHUMP

With these, I’m up to nearly 300 consecutive solves at Word Master.

Nice find. But it uses plurals. I've not failed on Wordle yet. I failed on this within 5 goes. I got to _AILS in 3 guesses, then it wasn't HAILS, BAILS, or MAILS. I still had JAILS to try, but it was WAILS. (I'd already eliminated SAILS, RAILS, TAILS and PAILS with my early guesses).

Not the same thing, at all.

unless you try to complete it in 6-only moves from a preset, and previously memorised, subset selection of colour combinations.

obviously.

That’s why getting as much alphabet coverage in the 1st four guesses is the way to go with Word Master. 👍

I got as much coverage as I could. Just strangely didn't use J, B, H, W or M, before R, S, T, D, P, N, L, C, F etc... Knowing it uses plurals I probably would stop playing hard mode, because there are words where you could get 4 letters in the right place first go and still lose. I guess the same is true of Wordle, but it hasn't happened yet (and I got there so quickly in Word Master).

Edit: I'd also start with a word that ends in S, because there must be a huge number - almost every four letter noun must be possible. You'd be mad not to.

For WordMaster, I skip the S in my 1st four guesses because I know it is so common; it’s always a candidate in guesses 5 & 6.

I got 316 puzzles in a row without a fail before CONED tripped me up when I guessed other _ONED words instead of playing CHUMP as my usual 4th word.

Wordle 207 4/6*

🟨

🟨🟨

🟨🟩🟩🟩

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Spoiler

HOIST

CLOAK

VAPOR

FAVOR

Not counting this result as I accidentally saw @Monkeyspill's spoiler about American English earlier, which tipped me off enough to avoid failure.

Bit disappointed that the developer has chosen to include localised spellings instead of restricting the word list to common ones. It's going to be something I have to actively bear in mind in future.
