Glad they're scraping the teams chatting (read whining) to the race director. It was stupid and only ever played when either the team or the RD was fucking something up.

And glad Masi is gone. His handling of the end of last season was terrible. It's not so much that he made the wrong decisions w.r.t. applying the rules but that he seemingly changed his mind. He allowed the occasion and the championship to influence his approach to a situation. That's not tenable.

I think Ferrari have slipped up here and revealed their hand early... Anti-Grav front wing that isn't psychically connected to the car. Looks like the nose could be a hologram to provide a bit of misdirection.

I looked back to find what I said in the other thread:

My own thoughts on the whole thing are basically Hanlon's Razor - it wasn't a fix, just good old lack of competence. I have no doubt that Masi's job is very hard; nor do I have any doubt that he's been doing it quite badly for some time, not just this race.

Ahead of the finale, I would have preferred to see Hamilton win. In light of what actually happened, I'm disappointed and I do think Hamilton was absolutely robbed by poor officiating, but it is what it is. There's no way Max is being stripped of the title, even if it was gifted to him in the end. Max and RBR didn't do anything wrong, they just reacted to the situation put in front of them.

I also don't think Masi is going anywhere in the foreseeable future. He can't be got rid of, or even allowed to 'resign', because as many people have said already, that would be seen as a clear admission that he'd unfairly influenced the title decision.

Then again, you've got Andrew Benson at the BBC saying that at least half the teams on the grid now have no confidence in Masi. Obviously three of those are the works Mercedes team, plus McLaren and Williams as engine customers (edit: four! I forgot Aston Martin. Thanks Dudley!) And you can ignore RBR and SAT as they'll be very happy with him right now. So I suppose the question marks are with Alpine and the Ferrari-powered teams.

At most, if Masi's head IS going to roll, perhaps the whole race will be deleted. Then Max remains WDC and Mercedes-Benz remains WCC and nothing actually changes, but maybe it looks like some kind of justice.

Looks like I was wrong about most of that, then.

I'm honestly surprised by today's news.

If one were a cynical observer, one could suggest that they've used him to get a job done, and now that he's served his purpose he's of no further utility and can be cut loose.

I probably don't really believe that, but I mean, here they are, sacking him without actually addressing the obvious elephant in the room.

They’re racing elephants now?

There would have been a lot less of a furor if we hadn't heard Masi using Red Bull's words when he dismissed Toto's complaints. Changes to how the safety car is managed feels like it's just cover when it has operated without issue until Masi decided to freestyle it in the Championship decider.

Masi, and Masi alone, got himself into this position. He does not deserve any sympathy what so ever.

Absolutely. He'd had a bad season but Abu Dhabi was something else.

Out of every conceivable choice he could have made in those final 5 laps he made the absolute worst choice on every occasion.

Red Flag? Perhaps it could have been argued that it created a bit of artificial excitement but it would have worked and in keeping with the rules and races like Baku.

Safety car to the end - Boring but within the rules.

Don't allow any cars to unlap, bring the safety car in as per the rules and allow one final lap - A broadly fair way of finishing the race.

Allow everyone car to unlap themselves and try and start the race - At least it is consistent to all cars although we're probably wouldn't have had time for a final lap.

Somehow, out of all those options he elected to allow some cars but not other cars to un-lap themselves and then brought the safety in a lap too early because he'd faffed around for too long.

I mean, Masi might be disappointed at today's decision but he really has only himself to blame. There were plenty of try and tested scenarios he could have invoked for the last 5 laps, that he thought it was a good idea to try something completely new and untested on the final 5 laps of the season with the entire championship riding on his call is on him.

Basically if he wanted an exciting end he should have immediately red flagged the race. When he didn't make that decision he should have just accepted that it was going to be safety car to the end. I wonder if part of the reason it all went so wrong is that he realised he'd bodged his red flag chance and was desperate to somehow not be held up as the village idiot the next morning so he just kept doubling down on bad decisions hoping somehow he'd get away without looking like he fucked it.

Well, I imagine the changes are going to simply be that the Race Director has to obey the Safety Car rules and can't just wing it when they get bored with the on track action.

While Masi undoubtedly fucked it, he looked like a man struggling with his mental health at times during the season. Someone should have recognised that and offered practical assistance. It's also too big a role for one person, as demonstrated by the increase in staff taking on the role for 2022 and the race director alternating race by race.

I also have to wonder to what extent Liberty or the FIA pressured him to make sure the last race provided maximum excitement, and if that played a role in the fiasco, then he is somewhat of a patsy in the whole affair.

That said, yes, he fucked it and his position was untenable, I just doubt he was the only one at fault

This is all I’m going to say on the matter, but I don’t like how Masi has been treated.

Me too. Protected by a wall of silence from his employers. No need to account for his actions publicly. Quietly moved into a nice new role. Cushty.
