I only caught the highlights this week due to family commitments but was nice to see Hamilton get super close to a win. Took Russell t-boning a Ferarri and a Red Bull pitstop fuckup so I still don't think they're competitive.  Think I've resigned myself to this being the first season Hamilton doesn't get a win. A shame. Was a cool little stat.

Alonso crashing was funny.  Maybe he went too far looking for the grey areas.

Alonso receives 10 second stop go penalty, converted to a 30 second time penalty as stewards determine his car was sent out on track in an unsafe condition. He drops to 15th.

Stroll receives a 3 place grid penalty for causing a collision.

Not saying it as his fault but it was a bit weird, why did Alonso wait so long to pull out when he was going so much faster and with so much straight in front of them he would have been past way before the corner?

I assume when you get that close and are directly behind the driver in front can’t see anything in their mirrors?

So. Perez and Alonso were each in a collision, each kept racing, and each had bits of his car later come off at high speed (Perez's front wing endplate and Alonso's rear-view mirror).

Haas apparently protested both of these. I know Alonso got a 10s stop-go that converts to a 30s time penalty. I don't see anyone reporting what Perez got. Presumably similar? What does that do to the finishing order?

Sam Collins has done a Twitter thread about the differences between the Perez and Alonso situations:

Seems to hinge on the idea that once Perez's endplate had fallen off, his car was no longer unsafe, whereas once Alonso's mirror came off, that car was unsafe due to now not having the mirror.

I expect he's not wrong but I don't really buy it. To me you penalise both or neither, not just one.

Cant be right as if it was deemed unsafe then forced retirement, that doesn’t equal a 10 second in race penalty. Plenty of cars have lost a mirror or had a flapping mirror and not been punished, wing damage on the other hand…

I dont think Alonso should have been penalised, not sure Perez either tbh but then you kind of dig a hole when you hit one driver 3 times in a season and then do nothing to other drivers.

You seem to see cars carrying on with no wing endplates all the time (and bizarrely usually with no noticeable effect on performance, to the point you wonder whether they actually do anything!)

I think the endplates matter less this season, I think they're just directing the outwash now rather than being an aerodynamic device.

I could be wrong though
