In Max’s own words…

”I went round the outside & I immediately felt he wasn’t going to leave space so I just went for it, he didn’t leave me space so I knew we were going to get together. It cost him the race win, for me it gave me 5 seconds. It wouldn’t have mattered anything for my race.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Max is willing to fork over potential lost championship position bonus money amounts to Checo’s mechanics if Leclerc beats him to the punch by a point at Abu Dhabi. Perhaps Red Bull don’t work that way (Merc do, or at least they did as of 2019).

Great for George - really pleased for him. Hopefully with that off his back he can loosen up a bit. Think Lewis really came back hard at him in the middle of the year and it threw him off a little so this’ll help him heading into the winter. Hopefully Merc also give both drivers a much better car next year too.

Fun race overall.

So if that's true the narrative would be:

  • Perez crashes on purpose in Q3 for Monaco this year, to protect his starting position
  • This costs Max, who is coming through behind on a flyer, a chance at a front row start
  • Perez goes on to win the race, Max comes in P3
  • Allegedly Perez later admits to the team that he did crash on purpose (presumably some time later, after his contract has been extended)
  • Max has never forgotten or forgiven him for it, and has apparently waited this long for the right opportunity to get his own back.

I do think it's worth pointing out that your man "formulamatt3316" there is an enormously pro-Max account who's probably dug this up out of what he believes is solidarity/justification for Max's version of events this weekend.

Nonetheless I do think there's probably something in it. Perez isn't stupid and he didn't suddenly forget how to drive. I can't see how blipping the throttle mid-corner with an armful of lock was ever going to do anything other than loop the car. And he does go on to win the race.

Not that that excuses Max refusing team orders (I know we all hate team orders, but I mean he was happy enough to accept the one a few laps beforehand that put him in front of Perez in the first place) nor, more importantly, him being a dick about it.

Speaking of Max being a dick, in his post-race interviews when asked about the collision with Lewis, he quite openly says he's fine with the +5s he received for it, because his Red Bull didn't have the race pace to win anyway, but it denied Lewis the win.

What do they say? When someone tells you who they are, believe them?

Though applying the throttle and opposite lock could have resulted in far more damage than he had, seems like a bit of a reach that he did that on purpose despite the "added context" of that video.

Better to do a Rosberg/Schumacher and lose it in a way you don't risk damaging the car.

That Max has held a grudge this long despite everything Perez has done in role as a number 2 driver still shows his character is pretty poor

I wasn’t convinced at the time he did it on purpose and I’m still not.

I also think the chance that he confessed to doing it to the team and still being allowed to drive are slim to none.

I’d love both to be true though.

Especially when we are at the end of a season where there are opportunities for drivers to give a little to make them seem less like the aggressive arseholes they are at earlier parts.

Tbh I think Chico is a dick, Max is a dick so it's all good.

If wonder of Sky will sully away from this story at the next race, they seemed somewhat quiet on any off track "drama" this weekend.

I think at this race they didn’t go big on it because they were still touchy feely getting back into bed with RB. And there were plenty of on track stories to big up instead. Next week will be a snooze fest so I expect the drama to take centre stage all weekend.

Perez crash in Monaco still only qualified him third, it took a Ferrari strategy masterclass for him to win the race. But from his perspective if it was deliberate the aim would have been to start the race ahead of Max which he did knowing Max would not be able to overtake him.

It's interesting that these rumours are being pushed the most and earliest by dutch media...

Firstly, if you're going to crash deliberately at Monaco, doing it at Portier is pretty dump as the exit is blind, and the potential for a car breaking collision with someone else is high.  Monaco has some really obvious and well sighted areas to do this, pretty much any part of the track after Portier would do it, but also Lowes.  The nouvelle chicane, exit of swimming pool chicane and of course Rascasse as the most obvious ones to me.

Secondly, if you're going to crash deliberately, the front of the car with the big part than can be replaced in <10 seconds is the one I'd go for, not backwards risking a potential gearbox issue as we saw Charles do in the past.

I'm not saying Perez didn't do it deliberately, but if he did, it was some weird spur of the moment thing that makes no sense and has more risk than reward if he did.

Of course the biggest stupidity is probably me trying to make any sense of something that Max alleges.

I've read this over several times and I can;t see any other reading than max saying "I deliberately caused a collision".

Looked at like that, 5s seems very lenient.

As far as the brewing team-mate disquiet goes, I can;t see it making a difference one way or the other to Red Bull's results. These thigns are only ever really a problem when you've got two drivers at or close to the same level. That's not the case at Red Bull. I guess more of a risk is friction between the team and Max, but it's not like he's going to leave.

This year they had a huge car advantage and Max didn't need Perez's help. In 21 when the margins were tighter Perez's help did make a difference. Next year they might not have any advantage and might be a bit like this year's mid season Ferrari - sort of there, sort of not. In that situation they would need Perez more.

I can absolutely see a situation where Perez is asked to move aside for Max next year, him not doing so and the team firing him for it.

Danny Ric going to RB as a reserve might end up being the Hail Mary move of all time - almost as improbable as Perez to RB was when he was winless in that Jordan.

Did perez's help make much of a difference last year? The backing up at Abi Dhabi, well that was rendered moot by you-know-what, but apart from that I thought the consensus was that he'd not been that effective in tailgunning for max most of the season through being too far off the pace. Though I suppose when it came that close, then anywhere he can point to denying lewis a position as being critical.

Hamilton could have pitted for softs in clear air had Perez not held him up for so long prior to the safety car bunching up.
