Now Official: Microsoft Press Release: Deal to acquire Activision Blizzard

Quote

With three billion people actively playing games today and fueled by a new generation steeped in the joys of interactive entertainment, gaming is now the largest and fastest-growing form of entertainment. Today, Microsoft Corp. announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc., a leader in game development and interactive entertainment content publisher. This acquisition will accelerate the growth in Microsoft’s gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud and will provide building blocks for the metaverse.

When the transaction closes, Microsoft will become the world’s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. The planned acquisition includes iconic franchises from the Activision, Blizzard and King studios like “Warcraft,” “Diablo,” “Overwatch,” “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush,” in addition to global eSports activities through Major League Gaming. The company has studios around the word with nearly 10,000 employees.

Quote

“Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all.”

That was quick.

Call of Duty exclusive on Xbox is the biggest get there, isn't it?

Changes the game.

more seriously I doubt the money making machine that is CoD Warzone (or whatever the f2p  thing is with loot boxes or dlc) will be exclusive. Certain online free 2 play games as a (money making) service  will remain multiplatform

That sounds a lot like the stuff people were saying about Bethesda when they were bought.

Considering the share price was in the toilet over the recent stories, they might have gotten a deal here.

There was talk of them quietly clearing house and removing all the people with HR complaints against them, which did feel like a sudden back down and change in tactics, if that was due to Microsoft then it makes sense. I imagine Kotick will be taking a golden parachute and working on his Presidential run with the torturer lady.

I'd love that copium you are huffing.

You don't spend $70bn to stay multiplatform.

I don't think they will pull warzone.

But they will launch warzone 2 / it's replacement and it won't be on PS5.

Activision Blizzard, not just Activision.

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will empower players to enjoy the most-immersive franchises, like “Halo” and “Warcraft,” virtually anywhere they want.

This is insane.

I don't suppose they can get Hearthstone and WoW on Xbox can they - I would love that :D

EDIT - actual serious question. Activision publish Destiny does that mean they "control" Bungie in any way or is that relationship purely Activision publish Bungie games on a game by gfame basis and Bungie can be published by whoever they want?

Why would they do that? I think it'll be an expanded version of what they are doing with Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls where Gamepass subscribers get currency or perks regularly.

I'll be very curious to see what they do with the annual CoD releases though. Maybe this years game will be the last CoD to get a Playstation release?
