Microsoft is trying to acquire Activision Blizzard (UPDATE: CMA says NO!).

Imagine the crossover potential.

Call Of Duty with a 'Demons from Doom' mode instead of boring ass zombies.

An Activision compilation in the style of Rare Replay, covering every major console generation

Guitar Hero with licensed music from Halo.

Tony Hawk's doing a loop around the Halo ring.

The Psychonauts going inside the minds of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot.

Diablo Halo Wars.

Hearthstone with Microsoft-branded cards.

Rare making a Call Of Duty game.

Project Gotham Racing Horizon.

Shanghai getting remade in HD.

A ridiculous Sabreman and Pitfall crossover taking place in a gigantic 2D environment.

I'd play any of those.

I've seen the aquisition of Bethesda and Activision as positive purely in the hope that under MS they'll both clean up their malpractises.

Activision are obvious and numerous, but Bethesda too with their tendancy to release games far too early and unfinished, which itself will put so much pressure on the teams making the games. Unfinished and buggy games on release is often a sign of a crunch schedule.

I know we are all loving Gamepass, but I'm getting worried now. This is just too much consolidation in the industry.

At this rate, they'll have killed off playstation in a generation or two, and none of us will be better off for that competition removed.

Yeah, but then there’s also the risk on gaming becoming even more homogenised.

And Project Gotham Racing, and Geometry Wars.

MS already own PGR... Activision killed Bizarre Creations who developed it. There is of course blur though which was the last racer that BC made before being shuttered. Now even that being added to GamePass enhanced to 60fps etc would be rather nice... (just release the 360 version)

I'm far less worried that this will stifle creativity and access, than I am happy that somebody is going to hopefully sort out the rotting mess that AB has become.

And on the above blog - surely one view is "they saw how bad the culture was, and decided that buying them was the easiest way to sort it out". It's not entirely fair to say ' they are going through with it anyway and that feels opportunistic' when the very act of going through with it might be because they think it's the best way to get it all sorted out. The other option was to sever all ties, and how would that help them or the AB staff?

Hmm, I'm concerned even though this doesn't really affect me (I can't afford any latest gen console so 🤷).

I swear this is capitalism at its worst though? Or can someone explain how it's a good thing (ideally leaving the toxic console war shit aside for a moment)?

That's going to be all about perspective - I'm sure you can find lots of groups that thing this is a good thing and lots that don't. There isn't a universal good/bad viewpoint here.

Well it’s good if you have Game Pass because you’ll have a bigger library to choose from, with some of the most popular franchises, but yeah who knows what the ramifications might be long term, or even short term tbh.

Must admit I'm loving the reactions from the YouTube PS channels totally ignoring what happened with Bethesda.

Apparently according to them:

- No one on PS cares about COD anymore as it's a dead franchise

-Sony's growth was organic and MS are just embarrassing themselves

-MS will never make games Xbox exclusive as they will lose money

If console stuff is difficult to talk about here, there's loads of examples. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_mergers_and_acquisitions And these are just the big ones. It's almost hilarious to see what AT&T have become, given how Ma Bell was broken up previously. We're weirdly OK with consolidation these days, I assume those able to legislate have a vested interest, somehow.

Do you have any links? I've had a crap day and I could do with some schadenfreude at the expense of a corporate defence force.

The price is really fucking eye watering isn’t it, for a company that basically sounds like it needs shutting down.

Which would suck for a lot of people caught up in it and just wanting to keep punching the clock.
