Yes I enjoyed those last two eps. Does anyone know what the score was with the John Turturro character? He seemed like his Outie must have been doing some investigation into other people at Lumen, was that what they were showing us?

We saw that he had a military background and he was clearly investigating Lumon for some reason, maybe the paintings were him trying to recall things from his innie’s experience? The article clippings, documents and map definitely seemed to suggest he was investigating the company in some capacity. 
 

The show’s writer Dan Erickson said this about it in this post-finale interview:

What’s Irving up to with all that Lumon research on the outside?

That is the big surprise for Irving in the finale, that his Outie is there for a reason, he’s doing something maybe a bit more subversive than what we would expect from Irving. And that he may be actually working against the company or trying to garner information. That was the fun surprise. We don’t fully explain what it’s about, but the most pro-Lumon company man on the inside may actually have ulterior motives on the outside. And that’s where it comes in with the hallway paintings and his trove of Lumon files that he seems to have collected. So we’re wondering at the same time that Irving is, “What the hell is going on? What is my Outie up to?”

That was amazing, the tension in those 40m was unlike anything I can recall in terms of how sustained it was (and all without a gun or fight, who'd have thought that possible in Hollywood).

 

What an amazing first season, just so self assured and well realised, the interviews with Dan Erikson look promising too in terms of how he has the next series already mapped out and claims to know an end point. 

 

If you'd have asked me a few eps back what I wanted in a finale I'd have said answers

somehow it provided very few but nailed it in terms of I don't feel strung out on a false cliff hanger, and don't feel they haven't got a clue what happens next.

What a show, maybe my favourite since Succession started.

 

I found myself strongly relating to it. My pre-pandemic work life is in a swanky large office environment where everyone is nice and professional and correct and controlled but there’s still these powerful unseen energies below the surface that you could relate to Lumen if you were so inclined. And my pandemic life is that of an innie, endlessly churning away on computer tasks that can seem meaningless when stripped of any outside context. Got to keep working towards this month’s finger traps despite my anxiety about potential management displeasure or my dread of being overwhelmed by all this black tar.

I was also hoping that this would just be a mini series. The stuff revealed about Irving seemed a bit basic and something that I would come up with. Hopefully not a sign they are going to make it too contrived and start over explaining everything. Definitely going to be hard to top this year though.

 

Has Ben Stiller been confirmed as being involved in directing the second season? That would give me some confidence its not just being passed on.

He is involved, but will probably only get to direct 2 episodes as he says he will be shooting another movie around the same time.

Is it a bad thing that the direction, set design, etc. is so good it reminds you of Kubrick? 
 

It’s absolutely fantastic TV and made me think about things in ways I didn’t expect. 
 

When anything doesn’t follow the norm it gets called ‘pretentious ’ as though that alone is criticism enough, when really it’s saying very little.

Really enjoyed this, thought it was well put together and different enough to stand out.

 

One thing glares though, and I'm not sure if it's part of the plot or an oversight...

When Milchick goes to outlet Dylans house, it was supposed that two people were holding the switches to allow the override.

 

Milchick was clearly out of the room, Cobel didn't know about it and Graner was dead, which leaves.... who?

 

Also, are Kier Eagan and Ricken the same character? As in Ricken has his memories?

I did wonder if that was what was going on with the dead wife when she was saying she’d only had a few hours and the day in the office was the best day of her life or something. Maybe the wife’s body with somebody’s consciousness put in? Her and Eagan Snr both had that weird vacant stare going on too…Would free up our man to get with Helly! Also the corridor she goes back down is the one in the painting? Like she’s coming from somewhere ethereal…

It was mentioned that Ms Casey was part-time, so presumably she only comes into work for the wellness sessions then leaves again. Her life as an innie therefore only totals some 100 odd hours (I can't remember what the exact figure was), and she spends much more time as an outie. There's no reason to think her outie isn't the wife, although obviously we have no idea what happened to her or why she was supposed to be dead.

Started this a couple of days ago, and it’s brilliant so far (two episodes in). Like all great sci-fi it’s full of ideas, spun off from a single ‘what if’ scenario. It looks great, the score is brilliant, it’s intriguing as hell, and it’s surprisingly funny. Reminds me of Being John Malkovich, weirdly.

 

The concept of being locked in work with no access to the outside world is hellish to say the least.
