I linked to a PAPA video in the other thread.  But here's another one with Keith Elwin (the GOAT) explaining the rules for high scoring in more detail.  Basically, stick to Hell's Bell's for the best tactics.

That video is quite old unfortunately, and code updates since then (by the legendary Lyman Sheats, RIP) have made the game much more balanced.

Long story short, the bell is triggered with the VIP button no matter what song is playing now.

That said, the bell is still key to high scoring strategies. And acdc is just a phenomenal game for score challenges..

It's all about risk vs reward. If you're shooting your song shots then you're also building up your song jackpot. The song jackpot can get pretty decent on a good ball, so you need to weigh up when to cash out that jackpot. If you shoot the bell 3 times it increases the playfield multiplier to 2x, and then three more bell shots make that 3x

On a good ball you can be getting 30 maybe 40 million or so for your song jackpot. But you could risk it.. it's just 6 more shots to make that a 90-120 million jackpot

So many potentially good scores lost in the chase for a great score with this game 😅

And of course, for everyone playing via emulation, it's VERY important to realise you've got an additional button on the lockdown bar you need to hit to activate the VIP pass

Is that the laser thing?

Oh yeah I think that table you're using in the comp is modded with a laser - yeah that thing! The lockdown button will fire the cannon and (between times) can be hit to use a 'VIP pass'

You collect VIP passes on a standard skill shot to the top inlanes (or if you go for a super skill you can get 2 VIP passes. You can do the super skill shot by holding the right flipper button during ball launch, then shoot any major shot within a few seconds)

VIP passes broadly award 'a shot', but the game selects the most valuable shot for you. In addition it also triggers the bell (a shot towards increasing the playfield multiplier) and in multiball either activates the 'add a ball' or advances you towards it.

So they're incredibly useful. For example, if you've got a playfield X running, then you need to hit the bell (every 30 seconds or so?) to keep it running or else it times out. The 2X (or 3X) insert on the playfield starts blinking rapidly if it's in danger of timing out, so a VIP pass is an easy way to keep it running.

This table feels a lot more forgiving than LOTR was, although I’m definitely go in g back to that one, I just wasn’t good enough for it yet.

Yeah the physics aren't as realistic as VPW's are, but it's still a blast to play.

Cheers for all the tips @Wizcat.  Hoping you'll join us.

I have more time for reading in the evenings than I do playing so been reading a few guides and threads on AC/DC, pinball table strategy is pretty fascinating, definitely an inherent understanding I’m not quite linking up yet but getting there.

Found a written guide to the table which is super useful, especially these FAQs

Q: What song should I pick?

A: See “Ranking the Songs” for some options. If you’re new to AC/DC,  War Machine is a pretty clear choice. Hells Bells seems to give the most points, especially on the LE.

Q: How do I get multiball?

A: Collect enough ramps, target banks, or loops, then shoot the right ramp. In general, Jam (ramps) is easiest to reach.

Q: What do I do during multiball?

A: The same thing you did to get to that multiball. Jam Jackpots are ramps, Album Jackpots are target banks, Tour Jackpots are loops.

Q: People fire the cannon into the bell instead of awards. Why?

A: Hitting the bell 3 times doubles scoring, which can be worth a lot. The bell is also less drain-risky than the AC/DC bank. Some players prefer to shoot the spinner, which is even less risky.

I've defined what my problem is on these tables, I'm pretty good at lighting things and doing stuff, but I am useless as knowing how to cash any of it in, like I just had all the songs lit on ACDC and suddenly I can't hit a ramp for shit, can't remember how to use VIP passes or anything until the ball drains. Pretty sure I could be doing a lot better if there were a couple of specific jackpots I could aim for and knew what was involved. Will keep at it!

Had zero time to play properly this week. My PIP came through so we've been sorting some important things for the flat that have been put off over the years. Bed for the boy, better desk, TV unit with storage to hide a load of the crap around. (Plus a dual monitor arm to allow me to set up my minitors how I want them for pinball as a treat).

Will hopefully get a score on the board by Sunday though.

Done a random selection from the 80s... The Big House

https://vpuniverse.com/forums/files/file/6210-big-house-gottlieb-1989-mod/

Never heard of it.  Tried it a few times...not a big fan of the table or the physics in the digital version of it.  I don't mind Solid State games from the 80s/90s, but there are way better ones to choose from like Bad Cats, Firepower, Diner, Black Knight, Fathom etc.

Maybe a better way to choose weekly tables would be to get a consensus from like 2 or 3 options with people voting?
