Sega leaves the arcade business.

Sega are consistently releasing some of the best games I've ever played. Consistently and their all mainly from RGG studio because their fucking amazing.

I buy every new Yakuza or Judgment game they release.

It's sad news about their Arcade arm.  Considering how important a part of my youth it was but they really are doing great stuff lately and are one of my favourite developers.

I can't really shed a tear for Sega's arcade division closing. Everything has it's time. For me, Sega arcade titles were visual experiences far beyond any I could experience at home.  Space Harrier at Whitby. Power Drift and GLoc at Cleethorpes.  Then the ultimate, R360 somewhere. No idea where it was, but £2 well spent.

Then the 3d stuff at Trocadero.

Wing War at Bournemouth felt like a last hurrah.

After that, arcades mostly fizzled away.  Was that me growing older or home consoles robbing Sega's arcade titles of their novelty?

Probably a bit of both.

Pretty much my only Sega arcade experience was when the top floor of Debenhams in Romford was an arcade (early 90s I think?) I've never been an arcade player so didn't ever spend money in there, except for trying the big sit-down Star Wars once. Still, it was nice that it existed, along with the big Electronics Boutique that was also on that floor.

Feel lucky that I got to visit Tokyo back in the early 2000s and spending several days in and around all the big Sega arcades. Row after row after row of Sega candy cabs hosting every arcade board you could think of all in fantastic condition and working perfectly. Showed what arcades could be and a far cry from the cigarette burns and broken controls of UK arcades.

I’ve always wanted to go back some time but the chance has never presented itself again. It’s a shame, but I’ll never forget the time I was there.

Oh my days, I forgot Space Harrier earlier. Every time I get a new drive to run roms on, a Pi or an Retro Pocket, it’s always amongst the first I play, just for the music and the memories it triggers.
