I've heard so much about how good this game is, so I downloaded it on the Xbox and I've played a couple of runs.

I'm not sure it's for me. The twenty minutes I was playing might be the most bored I've been with a game in years. I'll give it another two or three runs to see if it somehow grabs me, but if the gameplay is just 'walk around avoiding enemies and collecting gems/coins while your character shoots' for the whole game, I doubt I'll persevere.

But it's so satisfying mowing through a whole screen of bad guys.

I didn't think I'd like it but it's great.

That is all it is. If you don’t fall for the upgrade & survival loop it’s got nothing to offer you.

Walk away now while you can. The game is a crack dispensing gacha fruit machine and more addictive than that sounds. The ultimate goal is to watch the game play itself whilst you stare slack-jawed in amazement at the numbers going up. Just delete it and pretend you never even heard of it.

Thanks all!

I did play two more runs, and it's not grabbing me at all, so I think I'll bin it off. I couldn't give less of a shit about numbers going up or the upgrade/survival loop - those things have never appealed to me in any game - so it looks like I'm definitely not the intended audience for the game!

You might as well delete your whole Xbox and take up reading at this point

I'm definitely getting more out of The Mirror and The Light than I am out of any game I'm currently playing...

But on the other hand, this year I've played a whole bunch of games I really enjoyed. I just need something other than 'numbers go up' from my games.

Sack the garlic off for Santa water, pick the orb boost to evolve it. You won't go back to garlic again.

Thanks, had a great go with this earlier. 25 mins in, the wife comes home, kids gone feral and no dinner on! Does Quick Resume work? Asking for a friend

Yup no issues at all.

I had to leave a 27 min moonglow run earlier as lunch was over. Then resumed post work.

Was hoping to kill death on the run, but goddamn game refused me my infinite corridor and crimson shroud.

Still combined the 2 different whips into an all new weapon of death and got a crazy named achievement (Fuwalafuwaloo) and did survive the full 30mins.

No issues with quick resume for me.

Right i can't do the math. But I'm trying to take down death.  I'm doing about 1500 DPS per second and he has 46.5 million health.

How long before I can go to bed.

He literally died as I typed this post. I then played as him with limit break on.

Easy mode.

So after finishing stage one yesterday I did a half dozen or so bonus stages to accumulate some coin and get a better understanding of the power up systems.

Had a go on stage 2, the library, and managed to do it first go… well impressed, the super evolution of the regular weapons is soo satisfying, absolutely tears through the swarms.

Do get merked by death in about 2 seconds though lol

Yeah that's the guy. He doesn't take any shit.

I have gone through and beaten each map in standard mode and I think I am about done with this now as the appeal is waning.  Good, short-lived fun whilst it lasted.

I keep having another go just to see what sort of stupid weapon combinations I can come up with.

I've absolutely rinsed this on Steam (57 hours play time apparently) but couldn't stop myself from starting from scratch on xbox now that it's on gamepass. It's always interesting with rogue-lites to see how far you can get on a new save - how much progress is from all the unlocks vs accumulated skill/knowledge? Didn't think I'd get too far without all the power-ups, re-rolls for build control, overpowered characters, and arcanas, but managed to beat Mad Forest on my second run through, understanding weapon evolutions is so key. There's a slightly weird difficulty curve where after game 2, I had unlocked a lot more, so found it much harder to get a decent built without re-rolls and without the baseline power-ups to be able to brute force through a bad early start.

I think I'm finally making a dent on unlocking everything - realised how good the knife guy is when you give him a load of projectile multipliers, got the arcana thing and beat the tower to get hurry mode, and the coffins in the first four areas.

Still need to actually unlock the merchant due to stumbling into something else:

Spoiler

Namely, that Forbidden Zone thing

But I can get to that while playing the new characters to get their arcana. Or just use Poppea forever as she's fucking busted, even on a completely horizonal stage like the library
